iPhone 5S iOS 12 Review - Do NOT Update!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up guys my name is Brennan and there was a lot of speculation behind whether or not Apple is gonna support the iPhone 5s with iOS 12 but here we are with iOS 12 beta 1 running on the five-year-old iPhone 5s so in this video we're gonna be talking about some of the new features in the software as well as how it's running on the oldest device compatible with it so as you guys know I wish twelve-minute one just got released earlier this week and I've been running it here on my iPhone 5s ever since and let me just tell you right away I have been very impressed however there are definitely some things I am disappointed in alright so let's start out with some of the new features here in iOS 12 but then I'm gonna start talking about the performance and the battery life here on the iPhone 5s so let's go back to the lockscreen and start there so if we couldn't swipe up to see our Notification Center you can see that we now have group notifications in iOS 12 and this is such a massive feature for a phone like the iPhone 5s because the screen real estate just is not very big and this is where I featured like group notifications really really comes in handy so you can see now how the notifications show up you can see right here for messages it shows the message right there and then it shows four more messages instead of taking up all the space in your lockscreen with just one application so figure I can click on that you can see that it shows all of the messages right there we can click show less to show less and just put it back in the group notifications like that and we can also slide left to right to view manage and clear all if we go and click on manage you can see we get a new settings prompt right here you can net you can deliver quietly can't turn off and you can also go straight to settings and then you can see it brings you straight to settings in here and you can see there's even a new UI for the notification settings for applications so once again group notifications is a massive feature for a phone like the iPhone 5s with such a small screen and if you go back to settings you'll see that we have a new panel right here called screen time this is another massive feature especially for a phone like the iPhone 5s so screen time breaks down where you're spending most of your time on your device so it breaks it down entertainment you can see it shows a chart basically of how you're spending your time on your device you can see it breaks it down really well it shows pretty much everywhere you know it breaks it down by category and then by specific applications it shows when you pick up your device what send you the most notifications you could go by today in the last 7 days as well and you see we have all these options right here I cover this pretty extensively in my original video so I'm not gonna go in-depth with this but once again this can help you realize how much time you're spending on your phone and which applications you're spending the most time in and speaking of battery life of a go to the battery settings inside of settings you'll notice how we have a new UI here as well we have a chart now which shows the usage time and also your battery level which is really really useful so you can see here it shows the battery level when it went down when it went up when I was charging and things like that we have the last four days in the last 24 hours we have our usage time and if we go and click on that you can see it changes right there click on it again so obviously I haven't been using it that much today but you can see here the screen odd usage and the screen off usage and then it breaks it down by percentage so once again this in comparison with the screen time feature it will really help you optimize your battery life and make you realise you know what's eating up all of your battery especially for the phone like the iPhone 5s which does not have great battery life to begin with and like I said I will be talking about the battery life on the iPhone 5s and iOS 12 later on in this video now if we go to our messages let's just go to this message right here you'll notice that we have some new features and messages as well so you can see that the autofill or the autocorrect panel right there it looks a lot different a lot more clean a lot more flat than it did in iOS 11 if I go and click on the apps icon right there you can see that we now get the apps up on a top row like this instead of taking up the whole panel down here and if we click on photos you can see that it shows all the photos right there but we do not get the camera option until we actually click on camera so once we click on camera we can now not see all of our photos but it's now just the camera which is really nice so you see right here you could do anything with the camera inside of messages if we're going to click on to take a photo you can see we can mark up we can edit we can retake and then we can send right there so it's a pretty minor but cool new features added inside of the messages application now a big one that I'm surprised actually made it to the iPhone 5s is group FaceTime so you'll now be able to FaceTime with up to 32 people simultaneously on the iPhone 5s which is pretty impressive because that does take up a lot of CPU I'm sure so I'm not really too sure how many of you iPhone 5s users use FaceTime on a daily basis but of course you can now do group FaceTime which is pretty cool if you do use it we now have a redesigned voice memos icon and application if we go into here you'll see it's a lot cleaner than it was in the past you see we basically just now have a list of our voice memos and then just a simple record button right there and that's it really simple and clean I really like the new look of the voice memos application so if you go to Settings General software update you'll notice how we have a new toggle right here for automatic updates so with this you can update to the next public version or I'm assuming the next beta as well if you toggle this on which is pretty cool of course if you are into jailbreaking you definitely want to keep this off at all times we also now have Siri shortcuts which is a really really advanced or feature here in iOS 12 that I really really like so basically what you could do is tell Siri a custom command and it will perform a certain action that you choose so you can see right here Siri adds some suggestions for which you might want to add shortcuts for so if I just go ahead and click the plus on Twitter on coolstar right there so you can see right here if I wanted to open up cool stars Twitter page I will record a custom commands and we go ahead and do that so you can see right there didn't really understand me but I did say cool star so if I go ahead and tap that and tap on done and now you see I have a shortcut for a cool star so when I say cool star and will open up his Twitter page right there which is pretty neat and you can do this with pretty much anything in iOS which is really really cool and of course there are a ton of other features and changes I'm not going to cover them all in this video but I did make a video to videos actually one 4:55 in features and then another with the top twelve features in iOS 12 go definitely want to check those videos that will have a link to both of those down in the description below and also open the cards up on the top right of the video so now the question a lot of you are probably waiting to hear about how is the performance and the battery life on iOS 12 on the iPhone 5s well let me just tell you that the performance is actually very impressive for a first beta I compared the speed to a 5s running iOS 11.4 and it was actually on par with and sometimes faster than 11.4 and this is just the first beta keep in mind performance is only going to improve with future beta so that again it's really really impressive you can see right here I'm opening up applications on iOS 12 versus iOS 11 point for iOS 12 is on the right-hand side and you can see the apps open up quicker on iOS 12 sometimes quicker on iOS eleven point four sometimes but the point is that it's pretty much on par with a public release of iOS which is pretty impressive for a first beta and Apple did also claim that the camera and the keyboards open up quicker you see that the keyboard definitely does pop up quicker on iOS 12 along with the camera as well so there are different animations and things that are quicker on iOS 12 no doubt about it and you can see I did also run a geek bench test and you can see the results right there pretty good stuff up I'm really impressed with the performance so far in beta 1 so yes the performance is good and I was 12 but it's definitely not perfect you could definitely tell it's a beta still at some points in time sometimes I go to open up a random application maybe like YouTube or Instagram and it will give me a black screen and just crash back to the home screen I'll click on it again and we'll go to a black screen and crash again and then the third time it will actually open up and I found this to be pretty random and it just happens sporadically but it's not a common occurrence luckily but you know it is a beta so you can definitely tell it's a beta when things like that are happening as for the battery life on the iPhone 5 on iOS 12 beta 1 it's pretty much the same if not better than iOS 11.4 which again is a very good sign because battery will only get better with time as well and as I talked about earlier with more ways to see where your battery life is going via Settings iOS 12 is definitely an awesome update for battery life and I know you iPhone 5s users are definitely very critical on battery life so you definitely want to update to iOS 12 maybe not the first beta but maybe eventually you know beta 3 beta 4 sometime around there because you will definitely be getting better battery life and a better insight as to where your battery is going now the few things that I am disappointed in with the iPhone 5s on iOS 12 are that for one we didn't get the measuring app like we do on the newer devices so basically the measure app is cool for measuring things on the fly when you don't have a tape measure it's actually really precise and very accurate as well I mean it's not a feature that I'm gonna be using all the time but it still would've been cool to have on the iPhone 5s and of course like I said I am also kind of disappointed that the performance still isn't amazing like I said I still get hung up on apps loading and sometimes that crashed a couple times before opening and this did happen in iOS 11 also but of course this can be resolved in future betas and once again it's a five-year old device so you can't really complain too much but all in all I wish 12 is definitely not a disappointment like some reviews have said it's definitely worth testing out even if it's in its beta stage since it is very stable and there aren't too many bugs of course you should only test it out on a test device you should not install this on your daily driver just yet I would wait for maybe the third or fourth beta before I did that so anyways guys I hope you enjoyed the video if you did make sure you give it a thumbs up also make sure to subscribe for a lot more iOS 12 coverage so thanks again for watching guys and I'll see you soonwhat's up guys my name is Brennan and there was a lot of speculation behind
