iPhone SE vs. iPhone 9 — Name FIGHT!
**Welcome to First New Daily Analysis**
Hello and welcome to my channel's brand new show, First New Daily Analysis. I'm your host, Rene Ritchie, and this is where we dive into the latest news and trends from the world of technology and beyond. On today's episode, we're going to explore one of the most exciting topics in tech right now: the upcoming iPhone SE/9.
**The iPhone SE/9: A New Era**
I have to admit, I'm less interested in when the iPhone SE/9 is launching than how Apple plans to handle that launch. Prior to shelter at home, my prediction was a repeat of the 2016 March event with the new iPhone SE story being told in much the same way as the previous iPhone SE story. Just with familiar form factors swapped in for preferred sizes. However, with shelter in place, we've seen how Apple has handled the MacBook Air and iPad Pro updates last month. Those weren't huge updates that really needed new features demonstrated live on stage.
**A Different Approach**
The new iPhone SE strikes me as very much the same. Sure, an Apple event brings with it a ton of attention that translates directly into marketing for whatever new products are shown off. But given how much so many of us are just looking for things to talk about right now, it'll set social media on fire, no matter what. Apple's newsroom release with some Apple YouTube videos and media follow-up makes sense to me.
**How Apple Plans to Sell the iPhone SE**
Well, that could be even trickier. Apple could just drop the new iPhone SE the same way they did the new iPad Pro and let people who want or need it place their orders and take their deliveries. Sure, there might be some pushback on Apple even releasing new products right now, but they already did just that with the iPad Pro and MacBook Air. Huawei also just did that with the P40, and the aforementioned OnePlus is about to do it with eight.
**The Nick Fury Principle**
So, I expect pushback regardless, and whether or not they release new products because they're releasing them or not. But we'll see. My guess is that Apple is applying the Nick Fury principle here - "Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on." So, like the iPad Pro was excused as a high-end niche product made only for those who could afford it. The iPhone SE will be excused as a low-cost product for those who need it most in a time when they may need it most.
**Brilliant: A Neural Network that Approximates Launch Dates**
And Brilliant tells me a neural network could approximate the launch date of the new iPhone SE the same way it does by playing a simple game of "where are my keys." See, here's how it works. You have to find your keys, but your room is hella messy. As you look at wall tiles that change colors revealing how close or far your last guess was from the keys. Even if you have no clear indication on how to structure your guesses, you can still get better round after round, figuring out your strategy based on feedback and finding your keys and surprisingly few guesses.
**Why You Should Join Brilliant**

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- - I have shelter in place here.Sponsored by Brilliant.Go to brilliant.org/reneritchieto finish your day alittle smarter every day.Welcome First New Daily Analysis showon the brand new channel. This is where I talkabout Apple and relatedtechnologies and culture. The plan is to bringyou these shorter videosthree to four times a weekand follow up with a fresh, deeper dive on the weekend. So yes, you will have to subscribe againif you haven't already because new channelbut I'll make it worthyour while, I promise.I'm Rene Ritchie, and thisis iPhone SE versus iPhone 9.Just last Thursday,Zack Hall from 9 to five Macreported that the longrumored, wildly anticipated, next generation entry-level iPhonewould be called the iPhone SE.It would come in red and white and blackwith up to 256 gigabytes of storage. And most importantlythe launch was imminentlike last Friday, imminent. So obviously the Fridaypart didn't pan outwhich is the problem withthese kinds of timelines. If someone tells you something is imminentit could mean anythingfrom the very next momentto, well who knows when.Right after that peoplestarted searching apple.combecause of course they did.And they found a fewthings already brandedwith the iPhone SE name andnot from the 2016 original. Now I can't imagine how hard it's beenfor everyone on all the teams at Appletrying to coordinate product launches.while sheltered at home thatare all suddenly all onlineand with schedules thatshift weeks like every weekbut maybe it goes toshow you why that storegets taken down so often for big releases.Anyway, Jon Prosser, a front page techwho was absolutely not BryceWalker previously reported-- Apple has finally decided, and they're set on trying to releasethe iPhone 9 this month. And they decided tentatively the datesare going to be the announcementshappening on April 15thand then actually gettingshipments out on the 22nd.So April 22nd for that.- And yeah, his use ofthe iPhone 9 named therewas just a placeholder. As I've said before, the iPhone SE or iPhone 9makes a ton of sense to me.It serves multiple markets, just like the original. For people who want top of theline cameras and performancebut either still prefer ahome button and touch ID,just don't want to paymore than $400 or both.It also continues Apple's effortsto increase entry-level valueas the high end cost may continue to rise.More on that in a future show. And yeah, it's interestingthat one of these reportshas a name but no firm dateand the other a date, but no firm name.See my understandingon how Apple handles namesis that there's like this hero namethat goes at the very top of a listand then a long series of alternatives. And those are justscrutinized for everythingfrom sentiment to what theysound like or translate intointo other languages anda dozen other things.Often but not always thehero name just wins outjust not MacBook stealth. But unlike hardware and softwarewhere a lot of people have access to specsand bills even early on, thename is just a marketing thinguntil packaging and advertisinghas to go into productionwhich is usually much later in the cycle. And here is where Ithink the iPhone SE namejust makes more sensemaybe not as a special edition, but as the second edition. There was also some talkof Apple arranging the releaseto counter program the oneplus eight announcementalready scheduled for April 14th.Now anything is technically possible. But my take is this. One, it would be unusual for Appleto want to share a news cycle. Why compete for coverage whenthey could go the next dayand just subsume it.I mean, the Apple peoplewill cover the iPhoneand the Android peoplewill cover the one plusbut why split attentionwith the general tech peoplewhen you can just get yourcoverage right out on top.And two, I just don't seeApple caring that muchabout one plus.Maybe Google, maybe Samsungbut even then Apple just strikes meas the rich cousin thatpicks the perfect datefor them to show up andtake your guestroom. Not even thinking about any other cousinwho might already be therealready scheduled to show up.Focus remember is justthe equal and oppositeof tunnel vision. So I think the 15th would just be smarterfrom the perspective ofmaximum launch effortbut we'll see.Now I'm not going to get intothe hows and whys of leaks at this point. But if you're curiousabout that whole process, let me know in the commentsand I'll cover it in a future show. But nine to five Mac hashistorically had excellent sourcesfor their Apple reporting.Part of which went toBloomberg with Mark Bermanbut much of which remainswith their reputationand the current slate of reporters.Meanwhile, John Prosser has beenon absolute fire lately with sourcingthat's turned out to be accurateon a growing number of stories. And since most of us arestuck at home right nowthere's nothing like a little hot bloggeron YouTube for drama actionto keep us all distractedand all up in the popcorn emoji. But personally, I'mactually less interestedin when the iPhone SE/9 is launchingand more interested in how Appleplans to handle that launch.Prior to shelter at home,my prediction was a repeatof the 2016 March eventwith the new iPhone SE storybeing told in much the same wayas the previous iPhone SE story.Just with familiar form factorsswapped in for preferred size. Now with shelter in placewe've seen how Applehandled the MacBook airand iPad pro updates last month. Those weren't huge updatesthat really needed new featuresdemonstrated live on stage.I mean, LIDAR would havemade for a great demobut we've already hadpretty much everything elseshown off back in October of 2018and the new iPhone SEstrikes me as very much the same.Sure an Apple event brings with ita ton of attention thattranslates directly into marketingfor whatever new products are shown off.But given how muchso many of us are just lookingfor things to talk about right nowit'll set social mediaon fire, no matter what.So Apple newsroom releasewith some Apple YouTube videosand media followupjust makes the kind ofsense to me that doesAs to how Apple plans to sellthe iPhone SE absent Apple storesand during what for many is ahuge financial crunch period.Well, that could be even trickier.Apple could just drop the new iPhone SEthe same way they did the new iPad proand let people who want or need itplace their orders andtake their deliveries.Sure, there might besome pushback on Appleeven releasing new products right now,but they already did just thatwith the iPad pro and Mac book air.And Huawei also justdid that with the P 40and the aforementioned OnePlusis about to do it with eight.Of course, Apple is subjectto just way more scrutinythan pretty much any othercompany in the tech space. So I expect pushback regardless, and whether or notthey release new productsbecause they're releasingnew products or not.But we'll see.My guess is that Apple is applyingthe Nick Fury principle here.- Until such time as the world ends.We will act as thoughit intends to spin on.- So like the iPad pro was excusedas a high end niche productmade only for those who could afford it.The iPhone se will be excusedas a low cost product forthose who need it mostin a time when they may need it most. And I wouldn't be at all surprisedto see a few very tasteful adsrunning just exactly alongthose lines, the value. So then there's onlyreally one question leftwhere is the new iPhone SE?And Brilliant tells me a neural networkcould approximate the launch datethe same way it doesby playing a simple gameof where are my keys.See, here's how it works. You have to find your keys, but your room is hella messy. As you look your wall tiles change colorsrevealing how close or faryour last guess was from the keys.Even if you
