MY RETRO COMPUTER C64 UNBOXING! -- LGH

**My Retro Computer My 64: Unboxing and First Impressions**

I recently received a production sample of the My Retro Computer My 64, a unique project that aims to combine the classic Commodore 64 with modern technology. In this article, I'll share my unboxing experience, first impressions, and thoughts on the device.

**The Case**

The case is extremely small and fits perfectly in my hands. It's designed for an ITX build, which allows for a compact and efficient system. The low profile design also means that there's limited space for fans, which can lead to some airflow issues.

One of the most striking features of the case is its sleek and modern design. I'm not surprised to hear that it looks nice; after all, it's intended to appeal to retro enthusiasts who want a nostalgic experience in a modern context.

**The Factory Fan**

Unfortunately, the factory fan is not suitable for this build due to its small size and limited airflow capabilities. The slope of the case causes the fan to hit certain areas, resulting in some issues with airflow.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the final product will be like, but I'm excited to try out a different fan cooler that might address these concerns. The manufacturer has mentioned that they're working on a custom solution, and I'm eager to see how it turns out.

**The Build**

As someone who's always been fascinated by retro computing, this project was a childhood dream come true for me. Building the My Retro Computer My 64 is an exciting experience, especially when using low-profile RAM modules that won't take up too much space.

I'm also interested in exploring the possibility of installing old ITX boards and running a Linux-based Commodore 64 OS on this build. AMD has great support for Linux, so I'm optimistic about this aspect of the project.

**Conclusion**

The My Retro Computer My 64 is an innovative device that combines retro charm with modern technology. While there are some minor issues to address, such as the factory fan and airflow concerns, I'm overall impressed by the product's design and potential.

I'd like to thank myretrocomputer.com for sending this out for review and allowing me to share my experiences with their audience. If you're interested in learning more about this project or have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments below.

**What's Next?**

In part two of this series, I'll be diving deeper into the build process and exploring some of the unique features of the My Retro Computer My 64. In part three, we'll take a completely different approach, involving water cooling and showcasing a new type of PC building experience.

Thank you for watching, and I'll see you in the next video!

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enokay guys welcome we're going to take a look at the my retro computer 64 replacement case to put a normal computer in i want to do a shout out to my retro computer for sending this out uh the review is based on me not on them it's not paid for in any means they did send the unit out to me for review i've got some pretty sweet things to do with this i've been back and forth talking with uh sean seems to be a great guy i think he's got a great thing going here and it was always something i wanted to do put a pc in a commodore 64 bread box well now we can do it without having to do modifications so what we're going to do today we're going just going to be like part one of a series i'm going to open this up take a look at it give you my thoughts then we're going to do in part 2 a pc build to let you know what it's like to build in here what to expect what kind of heat versus airflow you have what if any reasons to improve upon it and how and then third well it's going to involve water okay first thing i want to say oops there's a glare there and yeah i got two lights coming down i've rebuilt and done a few things differently here and i'm trying my best to uh get things a little it was very very dark in my last review and it bothered me so i revamped so first things first let's get this open get rid of the glare and see what we get in here and what i think i mean i love the case they nailed it the box they nailed it like it is nailed it is exactly what we would expect now what's really cool here is this is a cherry mx key switching so you have blue switches here this is a mechanical keyboard already built in guys that's phenomenal all on its own i mean we all know a good mechanical keyboard with cherry is still you know 100 at cheap areas and so on and then of course they're showing a breakdown here we're going to get into that as we move along here in the unboxing because this unboxing is not only unbox it let's take it apart let's take a look at it and and and you know go over what i think on all that but anyway it looks like a proper commodore 64 box um but it's modern it's new this is a you know a brand new unit to play with and you might feel the enthusiasm in my voice but that is because i'm extremely excited as this is something i've always wanted to do and like i said you want to stay tuned for this whole series because we're gonna do some crazy stuff and you'll see here made in the united kingdom yes this thing does come out of uh the uk um i think he has a gofundme or the kickstarter or something's already started i gotta look into that and i'll leave information down below for you guys because if you guys ever wanted to do a commodore 64 build there's no better time so here we have the manual so to speak here and it's showing some boards i guess that were already uh tested and sockets whether it be amd intel and so on and under tdp so just these are what they have tried so they know that these are you know well working um i haven't tried anything yet and i mean it's pretty good there's a lot of good read here tells you a lot of stuff tells your pin outs and so on so this is something you know for you newbies or or anybody out there that's not quite uh into this type of thing to go through now we're going to just take this out because i want to get this box out of the way and of course i do not want to hurt this box because hey it's a pretty cool box all right so now we have this so we have the foam this is well packed they even have cardboard put over the keys i think i just heard a key so we're gonna get this off now we're gonna we're starting to look like we have a commodore as you can see here of course it says my retro computer not commodore 64. uh on this says my 64. this could be altered or changed based on any copy infringements or or licensing agreements or anything it could be the final product i don't know yet as this is a sample that was sent out may not be the representation of the final product i'm excited because i waited two maybe more months to unbox this i've not taken this out people i've had it for a while um and i've been you know so behind that i'm finally getting to it look at the size of these elastics that's slingshot right there so not only do you get a commodore you get a slingshot all right taking it out of the wrap for the very first time look at that so that is awesome they even have a commodore key put here to make it look like the original uh commodore thing and here would be your you know windows key so commodore slash windows right there now it all depends on what you want to do with this system too whether you want to build it as a commodore now explain what i'm saying there there is commodore os is out there so it still can be completely pc based and pretty much run any commodore so the one os will have let's say the amigas the commodores the c64s the c128s the 500s and so on all on here including i guess the pc based ones which would make sense because there was pc based ones for all you people that don't know the keys feel really nice they're clicky like they should be blue switches have a nice click to them and this is no exception this feels really good uh of course here my retro like i said this may not be the same when it launches we don't know the layout may change we don't know here's a reset i'm going to say feels like a reset button not quite sure so here on the side we have a card reader now my partner in crime down there in texas he got a different again like i said a different revision of this product uh which was in a white box i think and not quite as retail looking he didn't even have this okay so we have a card reader right here which is great so let's say i want to build my new editing machine in this i could do so and there's my card slot i don't know if this is usb 3 or not that's something i want to look into because that is kind of important to me now on the back here oh looks like we got some goodies inside there i don't know what this is or anything yet um and we have a fan right here for exhaust now i don't know what the cfm or how this fan performs yet but that's definitely going to pull air out now there might be some ways like i said i look at this case and i'm wondering airflow um we're going to look at all that down the road maybe we can get some be quiet or uh knock to a small fans or something in here and bring air across the board especially when you do what i'm going to do in the future water you need airflow um also i see that there is no other holes coming out here so i have to see how i'm gonna do that because maybe i may have to put a couple holes here for something i'm doing later but we'll see we'll we'll get to that when we get to it like i say the first initial build here will be the system as most people will build it and i'll give you my thoughts on that here on the side we have a fake optical drive thing here it looks like it oh it's even got the commodore logo on it that is sweet see attention to detail people so that's really cool that's really cool so i don't know what the inside of that looks like yet whether you can put it optical drive or not and if you can i do have them so it's something to think about so we have uh six screws here it looks to take it apart let's do that let's find out what the thing inside is i'm so excited and i just can't hide it no no no no no i'm about to lose commodore and i think i like it okay nobody comment on my singing because it's pretty bad but bad to the bone that is i'm excited i'm excited are you guys excited like i mean how many people did not want to put a pc in a commodore let's be real here almost everybody i know wanted to do that and now i get to be the lucky kid that gets to do it two more screws people two more screws i'm guessing this is some sort of tray system in here for either optical or solid state or hard drive i mean let's face it you don't want to put a real hard drive in here you want to put like an nvme on the board or something and that'll also help with the temps and the tdps putting a physical hard drive in here that's just asking for more guys we're going to open this up i hope it just pulls right off oh there we go oh wow okay so here's the beauty of this so keep in mind you don't have to put a pc in here you can put a pi so this is uh your keyboard this is your led and power okay so that right there is actually a power switch people not a reset so i don't need john to tell me what to do that is your power and reset or sorry that is your power and the light so it has led and it has reset on or power on here and i think that is it yeah there can't be more than a multi at that point so there we have it right we have our our top which is really cool and that is so sweet the fact that that is ah so sweet i'm in love all right so what else is in here so we have this second hard drive caddy uh there's little pieces in here i think that had something to do with this maybe at the time so again like i said we could put a optical drive here or we can put a normal solid state in here that is of course up to you um i'm on the ledge i don't know how i'm gonna do this yet uh this may need to be uh completely different for me moving forward um we have our fan right here so it's just a there's the the grill okay there's even some 3d printed parts already available for this on yeji or whatever it is i noticed that because uh you know big 3d printer play around guy and i said oh they got some uh stuff already for this for different plates and and different mods so there's a lot of stuff already happening in this design like this idea so your motherboard would screw in here okay i can get one to put in there if you want to see it quickly just to know what it's going to look like um i'm just trying to put this wire back down in here as it looked like it was popped out okay so that's just your typical a uh three wire so it's just on okay it's not pwm you just keep it full going and that's what you're gonna want anyway you don't want any slowdown of fans in this case if it's gonna be all air cooled now looking at this i'm trying to figure out how would i pull in or push more air across and that is going to be quite a uh an option something i'm going to have to think about so here we have the card reader and it is only usb 2.0 so i'm not 100 sure i'm going to use this card reader or i'll plug it in anyway and and and use it i guess while i can i don't know if i'd use it for my editing machine as when i'm moving 40 gig files and stuff with a 4k video that could take a while now uh my intentions was not to use this for editing people so this is this is okay if you're uh looking for a faster usb 3 one then you'd probably have to buy something that looks like this screw it down in maybe take the plate from it or whatever it was it looks like this was a actual floppy front plate so it looks like that'll fit it may even just line up with all this and you can actually put a usb 3 one in that is not an option or an issue it is a fully modular custom design here so this piece here can come out just a plate here for a normal hard drive down below and this is what i call the secondary hard drive caddy so that is what that was and it comes with some extra stuff for screw down which is really nice that he left the packaging in there i respect that thank you sean uh really nice i'm gonna say and and very durable this plastic is not cheap in fact it feels like a commodore it really does so that part makes me extremely extremely happy i mean it does feel like a commodore um again here this is just a fake cover on this piece here to make it end off to look nice you could do whatever you want here so you can either pop in a solid state here maybe you have your small nvme 128 or 256 for your osm you want to keep it clean maybe using this as your regular everyday computer why not you can do that pop in a terabyte or something over here for your data storage and then you have your uh regular uh boot up drive and everything all on your board i think the board i'm putting in here can take two nvmes so i don't know if i would need to use this but again we're going to use what's here in part two so you guys might be wondering what does it kind of look like with a board in it so we're just gonna lay a board in we're not going to mount this now because this is not part two but it is something i wanna see so in this case i'm going to be using an aurora's b550 uh right now i got this cooler on it because i only have a 3000 g in here but i do have a big beautiful processor for this i don't know if it's going to be in the air build or water and anyway we're going to just pop this right here now keep in mind my board already has the shroud already on it so that's something i wanted to see here because they actually have a groove right here if you can see that right there there's a groove and i want to see if my board's going to slide right down in that which it looks like it is so now the screw holes are lined up i'm trying to see what the balance is like seems like it's built quite well there's no real flex here so now if you're staying within the shroud height i think you're definitely okay but what i will do in the air build this i will put a factory amd cooler on here and see if it clears now the one bonus of having a fan cooled unit in this it's itx okay so with itx it's a small form you don't have to worry about a lot of area for air okay so that being said you can utilize this to blow the air down on the motherboard okay that's the beauty of these downforce fans they'll blow and go across your motherboard cooling your components all right now from there you have the fan here and then it's exhausting up the heat which is really close so this is going to take that out okay now keep in mind you're not putting a power supply in here well kinda are but you're not i'm gonna be using a pico power supply and we'll get to all that in part two stop trying to make me do it because i don't want to right now because i gotta do how i wanna do it okay that guy's gone that was weird so i'm just gonna place a few things here like this we're gonna pretend that's back in here everything else is going down but i'm having an issue right here so that could be this here still in the way i may have to um and it not being bolt down it's probably not helping um but that's here nor there try that again because you don't have a lot of room here and this is why i went with this lower uh cooler because i have no idea how much space i mean i don't think it can be really any higher than the shroud so keep that in mind and this is a little bit well actually it's more on par but this angles right this keyboard here kind of angles in so i'm just going to do this with it right now again when we do the build we'll figure all that out but right now that little guy is in the way so let's try it again so now that's out of the way let's see if it's my cooler or not you may have to go with a really low profile cooler here and i know john used a really low profile and there's a possibility you have to and the answer to that question is you do so i'm gonna have to order a low profile cooler for the air cooling build to replace this so you want your low profile cooler to be below this and you want your ram to be somewhat low as well so don't go sticking you know some big high-end gaming ram in here uh when well there's no need you're not even gonna see it so stick some low profile ram in here is what i'm trying to get at and this needs to be the height of this so i will in part two talk about the distance here let you know so we now know the factory fan is not going on because this is the smallest factory fan that amd has so that is enough right there to tell us that so overall though other than you know having to put a low profile fan on here which i expected i mean come on it is a low profile case it's very small and very very nice like i like the look of it and you're going to have your little twerks and the torques are of course you're building a machine based on an itx build in a slim case to make yourself your own modern commodore 64 or commodore anything or just a windows 11 pc whatever you want it to be and that means or if you have some old itx boards and you want to do a 98 or a windows xp system that would be an awesome retro build awesome that's on my mind still uh i just got to see where my old itx board is i can't find it so other than that uh this is really really nice i mean uh again i kind of knew we're going to get into a fan issue due to the slope as we go back this slopes and causes the fan to hit this here and giving it some issue there and i will link when i do the uh final air build i will link the fan cooler i'm going to use for this i have to see if it's going to be a be quiet if be quiet make one low enough i'll contact them but i don't know if they do actually um if they don't then i'll have to go noctua or someone else because you want to be able to cover this as much as you can and get as much airflow down on the board okay so when you're building this you want a bigger bodied fan something that covers it doesn't have to be all metal covering it just the air okay just the air and and i'll look into that for you guys so that's a big bonus again shout out to myretrocomputer.com for sending this out for review and uh allowing me to do a childhood dream of mine and that was to build a commodore 64 modern pc slash commodore 64 os whatever i wish and again the os would be based on linux just so you're aware but it has everything all built in and the one thing we don't have to worry about amd has huge support for linux so their graphic drivers their drivers everything amd is there for you when it comes to linux unlike the other guy um which is starting now because they know that they're losing a market and they don't they'll lose the market share on linux and i think they pretty much don't have it anyway so anyway guys let me know in the comments below is this one of the coolest things you've ever seen is this something that excites you do you want to see me do this part two we'll be doing it part three is going to be something completely different and it involves water okay guys thank you for watching the unboxing of the my retro computer my 64. again please don't look at all this and say this is what it's coming with we don't know what the final product will be this is a like production sample uh get it out there let us people say what we think of it what could be done is it perfect is it finally what everybody should be final product type thing it's it's it's a testing bed and it it's pretty much there i can't see how there is anything else you can really do here other than if you wanted to have maybe another fan like this molded in but again you guys can do your own mods as well so don't look at the minor uh things look at the overall experience and that's what this is supposed to bring you the retro feel in a modern day till next time guys game overokay guys welcome we're going to take a look at the my retro computer 64 replacement case to put a normal computer in i want to do a shout out to my retro computer for sending this out uh the review is based on me not on them it's not paid for in any means they did send the unit out to me for review i've got some pretty sweet things to do can come out just a plate here for a normal hard drive down below and this is what i call the secondary hard drive caddy so that is what that was and it comes with some extra stuff for screw down which is really nice that he left the packaging in there i respect that thank you sean uh really nice i'm gonna say and and very durable this plastic is not cheap in fact it feels like a commodore it really does so that part makes me extremely extremely happy i mean it does feel like a commodore um again here this is just a fake cover on this piece here to make it end off to look nice you could do whatever you want here so you can either pop in a solid state here maybe you have your small nvme 128 or 256 for your osm you want to keep it clean maybe using this as your regular everyday computer why not you can do that pop in a terabyte or something over here for your data storage and then you have your uh regular uh boot up drive and everything all on your board i think the board i'm putting in here can take two nvmes so i don't know if i would need to use this but again we're going to use what's here in part two so you guys might be wondering what does it kind of look like with a board in it so we're just gonna lay a board in we're not going to mount this now because this is not part two but it is something i wanna see so in this case i'm going to be using an aurora's b550 uh right now i got this cooler on it because i only have a 3000 g in here but i do have a big beautiful processor for this i don't know if it's going to be in the air build or water and anyway we're going to just pop this right here now keep in mind my board already has the shroud already on it so that's something i wanted to see here because they actually have a groove right here if you can see that right there there's a groove and i want to see if my board's going to slide right down in that which it looks like it is so now the screw holes are lined up i'm trying to see what the balance is like seems like it's built quite well there's no real flex here so now if you're staying within the shroud height i think you're definitely okay but what i will do in the air build this i will put a factory amd cooler on here and see if it clears now the one bonus of having a fan cooled unit in this it's itx okay so with itx it's a small form you don't have to worry about a lot of area for air okay so that being said you can utilize this to blow the air down on the motherboard okay that's the beauty of these downforce fans they'll blow and go across your motherboard cooling your components all right now from there you have the fan here and then it's exhausting up the heat which is really close so this is going to take that out okay now keep in mind you're not putting a power supply in here well kinda are but you're not i'm gonna be using a pico power supply and we'll get to all that in part two stop trying to make me do it because i don't want to right now because i gotta do how i wanna do it okay that guy's gone that was weird so i'm just gonna place a few things here like this we're gonna pretend that's back in here everything else is going down but i'm having an issue right here so that could be this here still in the way i may have to um and it not being bolt down it's probably not helping um but that's here nor there try that again because you don't have a lot of room here and this is why i went with this lower uh cooler because i have no idea how much space i mean i don't think it can be really any higher than the shroud so keep that in mind and this is a little bit well actually it's more on par but this angles right this keyboard here kind of angles in so i'm just going to do this with it right now again when we do the build we'll figure all that out but right now that little guy is in the way so let's try it again so now that's out of the way let's see if it's my cooler or not you may have to go with a really low profile cooler here and i know john used a really low profile and there's a possibility you have to and the answer to that question is you do so i'm gonna have to order a low profile cooler for the air cooling build to replace this so you want your low profile cooler to be below this and you want your ram to be somewhat low as well so don't go sticking you know some big high-end gaming ram in here uh when well there's no need you're not even gonna see it so stick some low profile ram in here is what i'm trying to get at and this needs to be the height of this so i will in part two talk about the distance here let you know so we now know the factory fan is not going on because this is the smallest factory fan that amd has so that is enough right there to tell us that so overall though other than you know having to put a low profile fan on here which i expected i mean come on it is a low profile case it's very small and very very nice like i like the look of it and you're going to have your little twerks and the torques are of course you're building a machine based on an itx build in a slim case to make yourself your own modern commodore 64 or commodore anything or just a windows 11 pc whatever you want it to be and that means or if you have some old itx boards and you want to do a 98 or a windows xp system that would be an awesome retro build awesome that's on my mind still uh i just got to see where my old itx board is i can't find it so other than that uh this is really really nice i mean uh again i kind of knew we're going to get into a fan issue due to the slope as we go back this slopes and causes the fan to hit this here and giving it some issue there and i will link when i do the uh final air build i will link the fan cooler i'm going to use for this i have to see if it's going to be a be quiet if be quiet make one low enough i'll contact them but i don't know if they do actually um if they don't then i'll have to go noctua or someone else because you want to be able to cover this as much as you can and get as much airflow down on the board okay so when you're building this you want a bigger bodied fan something that covers it doesn't have to be all metal covering it just the air okay just the air and and i'll look into that for you guys so that's a big bonus again shout out to myretrocomputer.com for sending this out for review and uh allowing me to do a childhood dream of mine and that was to build a commodore 64 modern pc slash commodore 64 os whatever i wish and again the os would be based on linux just so you're aware but it has everything all built in and the one thing we don't have to worry about amd has huge support for linux so their graphic drivers their drivers everything amd is there for you when it comes to linux unlike the other guy um which is starting now because they know that they're losing a market and they don't they'll lose the market share on linux and i think they pretty much don't have it anyway so anyway guys let me know in the comments below is this one of the coolest things you've ever seen is this something that excites you do you want to see me do this part two we'll be doing it part three is going to be something completely different and it involves water okay guys thank you for watching the unboxing of the my retro computer my 64. again please don't look at all this and say this is what it's coming with we don't know what the final product will be this is a like production sample uh get it out there let us people say what we think of it what could be done is it perfect is it finally what everybody should be final product type thing it's it's it's a testing bed and it it's pretty much there i can't see how there is anything else you can really do here other than if you wanted to have maybe another fan like this molded in but again you guys can do your own mods as well so don't look at the minor uh things look at the overall experience and that's what this is supposed to bring you the retro feel in a modern day till next time guys game over
