SPOOKY BOOKS I'M READING THIS FALL.

**Spooky Books to Read This Halloween**

As the spooky season approaches, many book lovers are looking forward to diving into some chilling tales that will keep them up all night. In this article, we'll explore three spooky books that I'm excited to read this fall, along with a brief introduction to each author and their writing style.

**The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager**

Riley Sager is the author of Final Girls, which is a book that I read last year and really enjoyed. If you're someone who loves slasher films, I think you would really enjoy his first work. Our main character's name is Emma, as a young girl Emma attended a summer camp where one night her cabin mates left the cabin and never returned. Now, as an adult, Emma is a painter and she's invited back by the owner of the camp she used to attend to teach art classes to the campers. So, Emma decides to return and find out what really happened to her friends that night. As an adult, Emma starts discovering some clues that might have been left by some of their cabin mates and tries to string this mystery together. It just sounds so fun and like a classic spooky horror thriller novel. While I really enjoyed my time reading Final Girls, I did have some issues with the construction of the story but they all felt like things that could be improved upon and fixed in future works. So, I'm definitely anticipating seeing how I sort of mesh with Riley Sager's second book of this sort - I think it's gonna be a really great one though and I'm very very excited for it.

**Meddling Kids by Edgar Quintero**

There were two things that drew me to this book: number one is the cover because it is definitely a very striking image, and number two is the fact that it's a sort of mixture of like Scooby-Doo. In 1970, a group of teenagers solved the mystery of Sleepy Lake which was really just a bitter old man in a mask terrorizing some kids. Do you see the Scooby-Doo parallel? The present story takes place in 1990 when these teenagers are now adults, one of them has actually passed away, and as the person they apprehended all those years ago is making parole, one of them discovers that they got the wrong guy. So, now the three remaining sleuths have to return to their hometown and start to uncover the real mystery of what happened back in 1977. I actually read the first chapter of this book a couple of months ago for one of the biannual bibliothon reading challenges, and I really liked it. The only reason I didn't choose to read the full book during the read-a-thon is just because it felt a little dense for the read-a-thon - the writing, the prose, is very flowery and very intense, so it felt like something I really needed to dedicate my time to. Which I definitely think I can do this fall. It just sounds like a really cool book in my opinion. Really, I don't read horror like at all; the deepest I get into that is like mystery thrillers, but it seems like it'll be very interesting, very different from what I normally read. So, I'm really excited for it.

**Horror-Proof by Grady Hendrix**

This is a book that was like somewhat popular when I first started BookTube in 2014 - I saw a lot of people pick it up and quite a few enjoy it, but I just feel like no one ever talks about this book. It's one I've had for like four years now. It's basically like a horror parody of IKEA, props to the author that's very imaginative. It takes place in this furniture superstore called Orsk, and there are just some wild things happening. You know, things are falling off shelves, furnishings being moved, sales are down, security cameras don't catch anything... so three volunteers decide to spend the night and try to uncover what is happening that is all I know about this book. But it just sounds really fun - I can tell if it's going to be like super scary or it's going to be like cheesy scary, to the point where it's just funny. Because I would be down for either of those experiences. Personally, I love IKEA; I think it is a magical place full of mystery and wonder, and I just feel like it's gonna be really entertaining to read about a horror story through this setting. It just sounds really fun, and I'm very excited to hopefully finally read it. I feel like it's time already.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what's up hello my name is Emma and today I want to talk to you guys about some spooky books that I want to read this fall it is fall which means it's Halloween the entirety of fall leading up to October 31st isn't itself Halloween you heard it here first folks today is Halloween autumn is the superior season and if you disagree you're wrong fall is a time of cozy sweaters crisp wind hot drinks fuzzy blankets and scary stuff I have been in the mood for some spooky books since like June but it is now socially acceptable to read all the spooky stuff and I am so excited to share with you guys some of the books that are on my TBR for the upcoming month I highly doubt I will complete all of these at this October and that's just sort of the unwritten rule of TBR's you physically will never complete every single book that is on your TV RLS but I have a collection of spooky scary paranormal thriller novels that I feel are really going to get me in the Halloween spirit and I think a lot of you will also be interested in as well as I know this video is being sponsored by hmh teen but we will be talking about them a little bit later the first spooky book I plan to read is hocus pocus this sequel the name and the hair might seem familiar to you as hocus-pocus is one of the most iconic Halloween films of our generation so with this book the first third is sort of like a young adult novelization of the hocus pocus film it is the story of max and Alison and Danny raising the Sanderson sisters from the dead with the book and all of these shenanigans and things that happen on the night the Sanderson sisters return and the last two thirds of this book is a brand new 100% original sequel 25 years after the events of hocus-pocus we follow max and Alex & zadar named poppy as she encounters the Sanderson sisters and has to protect her friends family and the town of Salem from all of their witchy plans once again now I say this every time I talk about this book I don't have high hopes for it I don't think it's going to be great see I sort of have this unwritten rule with why a books especially new book so that are sort of based off of pop culture things like movies and TV there's no author on the cover it may not be great that's literally me judging a book by it's cover but nonetheless I'm still so excited for this book despite my preconceived notions I have been watching hocus-pocus for so long I remember watching it when I was like probably 6 or 7 years old with my babysitter and since then I just continually rewatch it I love this movie I love the atmosphere of the story and even though I don't think this book is going to be like a literary masterpiece I think I still can't find a lot of value in it and it will just bring back all of those nostalgic feelings of hocus-pocus that I love also I have heard that the sequel story does feature a relationship between two girls which is really exciting I love that you know if anything else they've taken this classic story and modernized it and made it a little bit more diverse which i think is really great the next book I plan to read this Halloween is the sequel to a book that I mentioned in my spooky book recommendations that I posted last year if you want to check that out I will leave it linked below but and the next book I plan on reading is the last life of Prince Alistair by Alexandra Bracken which is the second and a final book in the prosper reading duology technically this sequel does not come out until February of 2019 which is so far away but I was incredibly lucky to get an arc of this book at Book Expo this year so I have it in my hands and I am ready to read it this Halloween season if you haven't heard of the dreadful tale of Prospero reading it follows a young boy named prosper who finds out that he has a demon living inside of him thinking about prosper really makes me reconsider complaining about dumb things like doing the dishes or laundry because I I could have it way worse essentially when a prosper is a great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather made a deal with a fiend in order to bring his family success and fortune you know how all those bad demon dealings go but prospers great-great-great-great great-great-great-great great-great-great-great grandfather double-cross the demon and so Prince Alistair has a in inside one of his descendants namely prosper and is intent on bringing revenge on the entire reading family I really loved the first book in the series it is just such an adorable whimsical a middle-grade read that is perfect for the Halloween season if y'all are a fan of Disney Channel original movies this series really pushes out the Halloweentown vibes it is not Halloween town it's not about this magical place for all of these different creatures get to live together but just like the feeling of the story is really really similar and that's what I love about it it's just fun unique and interesting and I'm really excited to see where things go in book 2 this is like a pretty hefty sequel for what the first book was so I'm very excited to read it me next Fuki book I plan to read this fall was sent to me about HMH teen as they are kindly sponsoring this video and it is Grimm lovelies by Megan Shepard you may have heard me talking about this book over the last couple of months because I am just so excited for it I feel like it's one of those books that was perfectly picked for me with my interests our main character's name is Anouk and she is an animal who has been enchanted into a human and is forced to work as a servant for this enchantress magician called Madhavi Tora in a turn of events madatha Tora is murdered and so Anouk and the rest of servants who have been changed from beasts to human have only three days left to save their humanity before they change back into animals forever in a search to stop the spell from reversing Anouk and the rest of the beasties that were enchanted by Matt Avatara discover a secret in the city of Paris that the beasties are much more powerful and deadlier than they ever expected and every a magic handler in this city is out to get them grim lovelyz has frequently been compared to the immortal instruments which y'all know is my favorite favorite series but it definitely does sound like a unique urban fantasy story I loved the setting of Paris and I loved stories about all of these different types of magical creatures operating in this sort of underworld of magic I just feel like I'm lovelyz it I just feel like Grimm lovelyz has a bunch of elements that I really love in literature and I think of they're constructed well together it'll be a super enjoyable read for me so if you're also interested at Grimm lovelyz does come out on October 2nd and it is or at least it seems like it's
