**New Features and Updates in Watch OS 5**

seven-day competition you'll get notifications throughout the competition to tell you your status and whoever earns the most points in seven days wins now the winner will receive a special competition award which you can find in the awards tab in the activity app so if you come out on top in that seven-day competition you'll receive one of these right here another thing you'll find in the activity app is a start workout reminder in an end workout reminder handy when you accidentally forget to start your workouts now the workouts app in general has a lot of new features you have a couple of new workouts here you saw the yoga workout but there's also a hiking workout which is really cool and then there's automatic workout detection like I alluded to earlier you will get an alert when it senses you've completed a workout or when it senses you started a workout but forgot to actually start it there's also a slightly modified button style inside the parameters for each workout so you can see they're more oval shaped than circle shaped I've also noticed that the little animation in the upper left hand corner of an impressed workout is now smaller and that may have something to do with the additional data points that can show up here in your workout screen there's a new rolling Mouse data point which will give you splits of preceding Mouse and for the first time they are also paste alerts that you can enable just by tapping the options button little ellipsis button you'll see there at the bottom tap peace alert and there you can set up peace alerts you can set your alert there and then you can enable a rolling or average pace alert by just tapping one of these options right here and then the alert appears on the workout button watch OS 5 also includes cadence aka steps per minute or SPM you can see it right here now let's talk about control center in Notification Center watch OS 5 allows you to access Notification Center not only from your watch face which both watch us for and watch West five can do but now you can access Notification Center within apps in watch OS 5 something you can't do on previous versions so I have the timer app open here let's go ahead and try to open up Notification Center on the previous version watch OS 4 and see what happens and nothing happens because you can't invoke Notification Center from apps and watch OS 4 but if you tap and hold at the top in watch OS 5 and swipe down yeah you can invoke Notification Center within apps that is awesome in speaking of notifications you now have grouped and notifications within watch OS 5 so watch OS 5 is of course on the left watch OS 4 on the right so you can see I have a whole bunch of text message notifications but look at the same batch of notifications on watch OS 5 and it appears as a group so if I have a whole bunch of different notifications from different apps I'm not inundated with just a whole swath of notifications you can also instantly manage notifications in watch OS 5 if you swipe over you will now also see in addition to the X an ellipsis button but gives you instant management for your notifications so you can choose to deliver those quietly you can choose to turn off notifications altogether no big surprise very similar to what you find in iOS 12 now you can also access control center within apps so it's not just Notification Center of course you can access control center from the watch face in both watch iOS 4 & 5 but notice what happens when you open up an app and try to invoke Control Center and watch West 4 on the right nothing nothing happens but watch tap and hold swipe up in watch OS 5 you can access control center from your applications along with the watch face that is a very welcome feature but it doesn't stop there the goodness doesn't stop there folks you can also rearrange your control center toggles simply swipe up like this and it will reveal an edit button you don't get that edit button on the previous version of watch OS but you do own watch it West 5 and now you simply tap and hold and drag to rearrange the toggles to your liking so let's go ahead and move that flashlight button up there because I use that pretty often just didn't really do it right that time let's go ahead and try that again tap drag and release just like that so once you're done just tap done at the bottom of the screen like this and that ladies and gentlemen is how you edit your control center toggles to your liking now let's talk about E and much more subtle change when you invoke airplane mode on watch OS 5 you'll notice that the toggles aren't as dark as they are on watch us for not a big change but as we proceed you'll see a lot more subtle little details like this in this latest update now here's something that a lot of us have been clamoring for for some time now the ability to connect directly to a Wi-Fi network right from the watch which is something we couldn't do before it always relied on the iPhone but now you can type a password using scribble and join a Wi-Fi network directly from your watch without using your iPhone that is a very very nice feature now let's talk about new apps first of all the walkie talkie app which basically gives you sort of a push-to-talk service right there from your Apple watch to communicate with other watch OS 5 users we'll have more details on that because as you can see it's not quite ready yet there's also a walkie talkie complication that you'll find so that will be a companion tool for the walkie talkie app once it works besides it only have one watch OS 5 device as it is anyway so even if it did work I wouldn't be able to test it out just yet looking forward to it though there's also a new podcast app something we've been wanting for some time now there is a native podcast app within watch OS 5 and that will automatically download your favorite podcasts which is really cool you can go in there and connect your ear pods or any other Bluetooth headset and start listening to your podcasts on the go so this will allow you to access your favorite podcasts you can go in to the noun plane section there's also a library section that you can go into just tap on that and then you can tap on episodes to view all episodes or you can go in to an individual show and then view the episodes related to that exact show so you can see the 9 to 5 Mac daily podcast has all the latest episodes right there at your disposal and unsurprisingly there's also a podcast app complication to go along with the brand new podcast app and you'll also be able to do this play the exponent podcast so you'll be able to use Siri to request any Podcast Finland on Apple podcasts just like that it's not quite working yet though now let's get into some more nuanced detail starting with watch face colors there's a new peach color available you can see there there's orange apricot scroll to the next one here and watch OS 4 you see light orange but if you scroll to the next one here you see peach so peach is new in watch OS 5 there's also a flashlight color that you see right here so that's new on the left watch OS 5 there's also a denim blue color so you can see dark teal dark teal scroll and watch OS for midnight blue but if I scroll on watch OS five you get denim blue that's new now I can't really show it to you yet but there's an updated Siri watch face that will accommodate third party cards so you'll be able to access third party information right there from the Siri watch face but what I can show you is a new gray color for the Siri watch face if you go into customize here you see those two dots nil you can actually swipe over you can't do that on watch West 4 and then change the color to a gray color which actually think looks pretty cool so let's check that out see what it looks like alright so there's the great color and here's the normal color that you get on watch us for which one do you like better alright so now let's talk about the weather app and some of the changes there you can now add or remove cities directly from the weather app you don't have to do so from your iPhone first so you can see there watch it was 5 add city you can use dictation or scribble to add that city and you can remove a city just by force touching and then tapping remove to remove that city you can't do that here on watch West for now you can also tap between the different parameters here so if if I tap here on watch OS for it just takes me to the 10-day but if I tap here I can switch between rain temperature and condition now you can switch between those on watch OS 4 as well but you have to force touch the screen like this in order to switch between them so it's a little more convoluted than it is on watch OS 5 but it doesn't stop there you can also scroll to view things like air quality UV index etc if you tap on watch OS 4 it just takes you to the ten day but if you scroll on watch of us five look what you get you get new data air quality UV index winds and you get your ten day on top of that now if you scroll the digital crown on watch West for basically just takes you to the next location that you have configured in your list yeah not as cool now let's talk about the world clock app starting with a different location list color scheme so if I go over to the location list you can see message isn't available on the Apple watch but you can read it on your iPhone but here on watch OS 5 yeah you can actually view web content directly from your wrist there's also new sinned and cancel buttons when composing a new message in watch OS 5 and you'll note some redesigned buttons when filling in Millfield so if i tap add subject you can see the buttons are slightly changed now let's mosey on over to the Settings app and find out what's new there you'll find a website data section under general for clearing website data now that you can view web content and there's rearranged text size settings so you go in there you can see how it's kind of been flip-flopped there within text size and I notice it could be a bug but I've noticed that the prominent haptic switch has been removed in watch OS 5 whereas it's still there and watch West for now let's briefly discuss a few other app updates the messages app has a new button layout at the bottom so if I scroll to the bottom on watch
