Huawei's P40 Pro Plus review - Is this the best phone camera

Huawei's P40 Pro: A Camera Powerhouse with a Catch

Huawei's P40 Pro Plus is the phone that I was waiting for, and now that it has been launched, let's take a closer look at its incredible camera capabilities. The P40 Pro series was introduced by Huawei in March, featuring two main models: the base P 40 and the P40 Pro. While the P40 Pro is decent, it is the P40 Pro Plus that really pushes the boundaries with its imagery.

The P40 Pro Plus comes equipped with a ten times optical zoom lens, allowing users to get much closer to their subject without significant loss in quality. This feature puts the iPhone 11 Pro's two times optical zoom to shame and offers an incredible zoom experience. I have had the pleasure of playing with this zoom, and it has been truly exciting to see what sorts of pictures I can capture that I wouldn't be able to get with the iPhone's zoom.

In a comparison between the P40 Pro Plus and the iPhone 11 Pro, I took some shots around Edinburgh on the highway. The results showed little to no difference between the two devices, as the iPhone's optical zoom was unable to compete with the P40 Pro Plus's ten times zoom. The iPhone's optical zoom maxes out at two times, which is probably sufficient for most scenes, but the P40 Pro Plus takes it to a whole new level.

The P40 Pro Plus offers an impressive ten times optical zoom, allowing users to get incredibly close to their subject without sacrificing quality. This feature is not only useful for capturing unique perspectives but also provides an exciting experience for photographers and enthusiasts alike. When I'm not using the zoom, the device still takes amazing pictures, as evident from my shots of weird flowering boots and a vibrant overview of Edinburgh.

Another notable aspect of the P40 Pro Plus is its main rival in the market: the Samsung Galaxy S 20 Ultra. Both devices pack impressive zoom capabilities, with the S 20 Ultra offering four times optical zoom. However, when it comes to detail and image quality, the P40 Pro Plus seems to have an edge over its competitor.

In terms of raw image quality, both devices can capture stunning shots at higher zoom levels. The P40 Pro Plus's ten times optical zoom produces images that are significantly sharper than those from the S 20 Ultra's four times optical zoom. However, it's worth noting that the S 20 Ultra still offers better image quality at lower zoom levels.

Beyond its impressive camera capabilities, the P40 Pro Plus is packed with top-notch technology. It features a gorgeous 6.5-inch display, plenty of power, 5G connectivity, and IP68 waterproofing. The device's battery life is also noteworthy, lasting comfortably throughout the day.

However, there is one significant catch when it comes to this powerful device: the lack of Google services. Due to ongoing restrictions on Huawei devices from the US government, the P40 Pro Plus does not come equipped with Google services such as YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, and the Google Play Store. While Huawei has its own app store that's expanding rapidly, featuring big names like Snapchat and TikTok, some apps can still only be downloaded as .PK files from their official websites.

This lack of Google services is a significant deal-breaker for many users, particularly those who rely heavily on these services for work or personal use. The absence of YouTube, Chrome, and the Google Play Store means that the P40 Pro Plus cannot compete with other devices in this regard. However, it's worth noting that Huawei's app store is expanding rapidly, and some apps are becoming increasingly available.

In conclusion, while the P40 Pro Plus offers an incredible camera experience with its ten times optical zoom, it comes with a significant catch: the lack of Google services. Despite this limitation, the device still packs plenty of top-notch technology, making it a formidable contender in the market. Whether or not the camera skills make up for the lack of Google services is a personal preference that ultimately depends on individual needs and priorities.

Ultimately, what are your thoughts? Do you think the lack of Google services is a complete deal-breaker, or do the camera capabilities make up for it? Please let us know in the comments below.

Huawei launched a p40 series which included the base P 40 and the p40 Pro back in March and while the p40 pro is pretty decent it's the p40 Pro Plus which really pushes the boundaries with imagery it's the first phone which comes with a ten times optical zoom lens which lets you get much much closer to your subject without much loss in quality it puts the iPhone 11 pros 2 times optical zoom to shame and let me tell you the zoom on this thing is really incredible take a look at these examples shot I took around Edinburgh on the highway and the iPhone and the standard one times name is little to choose between them the iPhones optical zoom maxes out at two times which is probably fine for a lot of scenes but the p40 Pro Plus takes the optical zoom not just to three times but onto a huge ten times which lets you get a completely different picture and you don't even have to move your feet to get it I've really enjoyed playing with this zoom and seeing what sorts of pictures I can get that I'd never be able to get with the iPhone zoom but when you're not needing the zoom this thing does still take amazing pictures this shot of weird flowering boots is beautifully exposed with good contrast and saturation while this shot overlooking Edinburgh is vibrant and punchy and would be a great holiday snap to come away with that is if we were allowed to go to holiday right now of course its main rival though is the samsung galaxy s 20 altro which also packs some impressive zoom skills and has impressed us already in our reviews so how do the images compared with the standard view that again not loath to set them apart with both phones producing bright vibrant images a three times zoom the p40 pro plus captures a pin sharp well exposed shot and while the s20 ultra can get a bit closer with its four times optical zoom the shots look a bit over processed and a touch on the fake side to my taste a 10 x 1/4 is darker than the s 20s but it hasn't had to digitally crop in so there's more detail making it a sharper image they can both go all the way to a hundred times zoom but the images are quite frankly awful so it's definitely a draw there in this cityscape at 10 times zoom both the shots look great zoom in though it's possible to see that the Huawei does have superior detail and of course it has a night mode as well which let me capture this shot in what was an extremely dark room it's easily on a par with the shots from the iPhone 11 pro and the shots in the s20 ultra beyond the camera this phone is still packed with tons of top tech it's got a gorgeous 6.5 inch display tons of power 5g ip68 waterproofing and a battery that will comfortably last a day now that's basically everything you'd expect from a top-tier phone launching in 2020 so I know what you're thinking what is the catch well due to the ongoing restrictions on far away from the US government the thing that this phone doesn't have is Google services that means no YouTube no Chrome no Gmail and no Google Play Store for your apps while we does have its own app store that's expanding all the time with some big names like snapchat and tic toc already available some other apps including Facebook and whatsapp can be downloaded as a PK files from their official web sites but the lack of Google services is a big deal and it will be a deal breaker for many of you particularly as this phone is far from cheap in fact 1299 pounds in the UK quoi weighs phone is more expensive than Samsung S 20 ultra there's no question qua ways phone has got a lot going for it that zoom really is awesome when the s20 ultra has similar zoom scales also has 5g has full access to Google services and costs less the p40 Pro Plus no longer seems like a smart Buy but what do you think of while is
