2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is trying REALLY hard to be a sports car!

When Hyundai debuted the ionic 5 it showed off a quirky electric fat hatch with fun styling solid range and quick charging times still there are plenty of people like myself who always seem to want more. Hyundai loves to oblige the notion of more by way of its end brand division this group of folks has one hand in the Motorsport world and the other in the consumer side of things and the result is usually a fun slightly more entertaining version of an existing product.

With the introduction of the ionic 5n, we've gone crazy in a very good way. This car is similar to its cousin, the Kia ev6 GT, but it's certainly not just a copycat. The ionic 5n rides on the same platform as the ev6 GT, which is also excellent. However, Hyundai engineers set out to make sure that these two vehicles are distinct and make sense in their own right. This approach ensures that each vehicle gets the fine-tuning it needs from Hyundai's n brand, which fine-tunes its vehicles at the Nürburgring as well as various proven ground around the globe.

The ionic 5n seems to be working towards delivering one of the most engaging experiences possible in an electric vehicle. While it likely weighs north of 4500 pounds and won't deliver a glorious and sonorous V8 soundtrack, there's a whole lot of technology under this mega-hatch-sized skin designed to shock and delight.

Let's talk power first. The ionic 5n uses a front motor and a rear motor to deliver up to 641 horsepower. The standard output is 601 horsepower, but with the n Grin boost function, you're pushing towards an astonishing 640 plus horsepower. That's enough to launch this car from 0 to 60 mph in just over three seconds and on its way to a top speed of 162 mph. As for what that would do to the range, it's hard to say for sure, but it's likely going to be a bit lower than the non-end version. Any electric vehicle can handle straight-line fun though.

To make this car more capable of track duty, Hyundai has reinforced and stiffened its chassis, added more cooling, and completely reworked its suspension. You'll find 21-inch wheels with P Zero tires at the corners as well as a set of 15.75-inch front rotors with four-piston calipers and a single piston 14.2-inch brake setup out back.

The craziness deepens when we look at the entertaining tech deployed here by Hyundai. They've created a system called NE shift, which simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox that you can shift via paddles. The car returns the feelings of an actual gearshift. There's also a sound component with the N Active Sound Plus System delivering different themes through a 10-speaker setup: one inspired by the sound of a four-cylinder engine, another by fighter jets, and an Evolution theme inspired by the RN22e concept car.

Beyond noise and shifting, you also have access to different drive modes. The 'n race' lets you choose between an endurance setting that limits peak power to help keep things cooler and maximize range or a sprint mode that delivers as much power as you need as quickly as you need it. However, the endurance mode is legitimate in its claims, with Hyundai engineers stating they could run this car for two full laps at the Nürburgring without any dip in performance.

The more exciting modes here are the 'N drift Optimizer' and 'N torque distribution'. You can adjust front and rear torque distribution through 11 different settings to get as much fun as possible. And if you want your drifting experience closer to natural, there's a clutch kick function to help with that. EV drifting is fun but it has its differences.

The ionic 5n also gets a larger battery pack, weighing in at 84 kW hours. According to Hyundai, the car can recharge at speeds of up to 238 KW on DC fast chargers and will get you from 10% charge to 80% in just 18 minutes. This is quick enough to get you back out on the track for more laps.

There's no word yet on the price of this beast, but it's likely going to sit higher than the starting MSRP of the ev6 GT. Additionally, Hyundai says this car will be sold in limited numbers and only in certain states and at select dealers. If you want one when they go on sale in 2024, you'll probably need to put in some work to find it.
