Lenovo’s LOQ Laptops Hands-On - The New Budget Gaming Leader

The Joy of Budget Gaming Laptops: Lenovo's Lock Loq

There is one thing I love more than being at a funky cocktail lounge, and that's being at one where there's a bunch of cool new laptops. But if I had to leave something out, it would be having gaming laptops in the room. And if there's something I love more than a new gaming laptop, it's a new budget gaming laptop. In fact, sometimes a new budget gaming laptop is so interesting that they should just make up an entirely new product line for it. That's exactly what Lenovo is doing with their Lock Loq line, which is different from their Legion line and focuses on being more budget-oriented.

The Lock Loq line brings in a lot of the same DNA as the Legion line, but not everything. For example, the GPUs only go up to an Nvidia RTX 4060, which is the top-end option available. In contrast, more fancy gaming laptops that would be almost the starting point for such a laptop might feature more advanced graphics cards. The keyboard lighting on the Lock Loq is also notable, with Zone lighting that's not per-key but still provides a nice ambient glow. Overall, the Lock Loq looks and feels like the regular Legion line, which is something I appreciate.

One of the things I really appreciate about modern gaming laptops, including the Lock Loq, is the number of ports and connections available on the back and sides. This makes it easy to connect multiple devices at once, which is a must-have for serious gamers. Even though these laptops usually use their own proprietary power connectors, they also offer the option to charge through USB-C. While this may take longer than using the proprietary connector, I appreciate having this option available.

The Lock Loq will be available in two sizes: 15 and 16 inches. Both models will come in AMD flavors and Intel flavors, and both will start at $900. However, if you want to upgrade to a more advanced GPU like the RTX 4080, you'll need to pay extra. The RAM will range from 8 to 16 gigs, and storage will be available up to 32 gigabytes. Again, these upgrades will come with an additional cost.

One of the main reasons I'm excited about the Lock Loq is that it offers a more affordable entry point into gaming laptops without sacrificing too much performance. The 15-inch model has a 16x9 aspect ratio, while the 16-inch model has a 16 by 10 aspect ratio. Both models, however, have a high refresh rate of up to 165 Hertz, which is one of the highest in its class.

The Lock Loq will be released on a rolling basis, starting with some models in April and others in May and June. The Intel side of things will start at $900, while the AMD side will also begin at $900. With so many configurations available, it's worth doing some research to determine which model is right for you.

Overall, the Lock Loq offers a unique blend of performance and affordability that makes it an attractive option for those looking to get into gaming laptops without breaking the bank.
