The Art of Skiing: A Guide to Making Big Waves with Your Monterey Surf

If you're the kind of person who likes to pull skiers and really give a ride on the ocean, you want to get the back of the boat. You know, throw somebody off I don't know, but you want to be able to do that. What's the point of being a guide with a ski motive if you can't eject those seto? So here's a pull from 35 Vala, yep, they're fine for there are 43, 45 pretty good pretty good. 57 on an RPM and then when you back out of it, it really decelerates very quickly. You know that's good if you're just gonna have you, you know, you got a skier, he drops you, want to be able to get that boat stopped and turned pretty quickly.

So we're going to pause this video because it takes about four minutes to fill the ballast tanks, and you have to do it at idle. We're going to pause the video, we're going to fill the ballast tanks, and then we're going to show you what it's like to make a big surf lake with the Monterey surf. So we'll be right back alright, we're back, and our ballast bags are all filled, three there's a front I'm sorry, port center and starboard three three bags that fill with water for total four in the front two in the back.

Okay, right and you do it all for the touchscreen is press fill or drain yep, and then it makes a surf wake for you using a cruise control system that limits your speed to 11 miles an hour, right which is surf waking speed correct? Yeah, you're anywhere from about nine point eight to about eleven depending on the surfer. Alright, and we've got a camera on our wake, choose which side they're gonna surf on in this case, starboard side, we put the camera on the wake.

Now that's it right, let's make some weight, so you just floor it, yeah pretty much, you go in gear and you just floor it, and this should work here we go, yep, there's the spheal holding, thanks back, and there's the trim tab adjusting Jeremy, oh there we go, oh look at that girl, look at that so now you've got a perfect 11-mile-an-hour surf wake, yep, little faster than the best in town, Justin here snick, there we go, yeah right, we're in starting to and that's over of you, you just you're steering a little bit.

You can kind of change the shape of the wait, yep, how about I pay attention to where the boat is going, and you can steer it, and make it a little fluffier or then make it go this way, and make it a little kind of curlier. So when your surf waking are you just going in circles? 5:35 pretty much, yeah, you want a big wide-open area you can keep it going straight obviously but these boats because they're not rockets I do like a little and that's what helps gets that way throw them back oh okay cool and it is a little rough out here so a little choppy and windy yeah but we get it.

I just wanted to show how that worked, and we get the idea yes, so you know there's other dedicated ski boats, ski boats, Nautique Malibu, those kind of boats, the main selling point of this Monterey is that it's actually quite a bit cheaper, having those boats. This boat is 80,000 bucks yeah, 79 $9.99, there you go as close as makes no difference eighty thousand bucks, and then with the deep V hull here, it's a little more multi-purpose I think but, and the argument for the dedicated ski boats is if you are that hardcore about skiing of the ballast tanks to fill up quicker this is four minutes compared to 90 seconds or so.

So uh, I'm gonna say it's a pretty cool little boat man yeah, it does everything I wanted to do yeah it's a fun to drive it's got room to lounge and chill, and it's got music, and it's got the ballast for wake surfing. John Stovall join us again a good representative of the family-owned business this is the Monterey 23 SS surf 338 SS 38 SS surf and what this boat is is it's for water skiing wakeboarding and wake surfing and it's a it's a purpose bump mostly purpose mostly mostly purpose like you don't you can do other things with it but you don't buy a boat like this unless you want to use it for water skiing and or wake surfing so basically how it works is it's got a volvo penta right gm5 3ls base marine engine right with a mechanical connection to the steering wheel tiller hydraulic steering out drive and and a cable throttle right but it has a forward-facing a propeller system correct so instead of the props facing this way they're facing this way so that moves the prop further forward in the boat correct and also what else does it do in addition to just moving that center of Drive further forward well the big thing is safety first server so your your moving parts are way underneath the boat so if you hurt somebody with the prop you've really got a big problem yeah like it's no one's gonna jump off the back or be and get stuck in the props as the prop is like it's like up here correct yeah so you have to be you'd have to literally run a person over for them to get in the wrap right the other big thing is fuel efficiency you're getting much much cleaner water coming I this prop instead of all the backwash and that you would get from the design of the hull you're getting directly clean water to these props there's a lot more fuel efficient you do lose them all an hour - off the top ends because it is geared differently yeah but you will notice with the different gears got like going up and gear a car alright it just immensely changes the torque curve of the motor yeah for you muscle car people imagine going from a 273 or a 305 rear end to a 373 or 411 gears you lose top speed but what you gain is acceleration correct and when you're pulling a skier or a wakeboard or wake surfer acceleration is much more than top end almost any powerboat will go fast enough pull a skier but put it especially for someone who's trying to get up on a wakeboard or something the faster you can accelerate the easier it is for them to get up exactly so we're gonna demo how this boat drives and then we're going to fill up the ballast and make a wake surfing wake and show you how that works real quick but right now I just want to show you dynamically how this thing goes we've been going can we go this way yeah let's go this way so I'm just gonna I'm in gear a little bit we're idling I'm just gonna hammer now huh all right let's see how it accelerates sounds like right back down there 24-hour there they're for 300 horsepower boat jumping Luigi 3 horsepower drag white boat the off-white right it's also not like a stubby right and so because it's got this stubby no and it's got this sense although center drive he's almost like a mid-engine car and episode I was like driving a caveman or a Ferrari the way you don't have a big snap and also avoided it maneuvers all of life is back really stay straight here yeah nobody was Rachel 23 miles an hour I got so used to the Auto triplets in this big backup there we go no that ass yeah there you go they don't trip yeah they don't wrap their 46 miles an hour 47 Derro they're here huh great nonexistent full digital gauges right there yep I feel like I like these little island this is great 14:8 so we got Wow 81 feet you got cameras all over the boat and watch for court near water scare all right right through here yeah short nose stubby little motivation chop okay one of the big things of honor it's about 21 degrees so it really does help make it talk most ski boats when you do it deviant it messes up the wake and that's why they make them flat right that's why these have the big trim tense articulate so let's just go check check out some back and forth handling here at 28 miles an hour look at the transitions you can almost kind of drift it a little bit but if you're the kind of person who likes to pull tumors and really give a ride on the ocean then you want to get the back of course you know you'll throw somebody off I don't know but you want to be able to do that what's the point of being the guide with the ski motive you can't eject those seto so here's a pull from 35 Vala yep they're fine for there are 43 45 pretty good pretty good 57 on an RPM and then when you back out of it it really decelerates very quickly -
