The Art of Creating Mummy Stroli: A Step-by-Step Guide
So, you don't know what a stromboli is? Well, let me tell you - it's basically like a stuffed pizza roll. And that's exactly what I'm making today for my Halloween party at home. I've decided to make them look like little mummies because, why not? It's Halloween, after all! The topping for my stroli is where the magic happens. I've melted one stick of salted butter, added a half teaspoon of oregano, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. Now, if you're like me and you love to put on garlic powder and Italian seasoning when it comes to pizza, then this topping is basically what you're doing with your pizza. I mean, who doesn't love a good garlic powder kick? And let's be real, sometimes we like to add a little um crushed red peppers on top of our pizza for that extra oomph. But hey, if you don't like it hot, then feel free to skip the crushed red peppers. That's what I'm doing, anyway.
As I assemble my mummy stroli, I need to flour my surface first. I've got a little bench flour and some store-bought crescent rolls that I've rolled out into a flowered surface. For one stromboli, you're going to need two triangles - it's easy enough to pull them apart because they have little slits. Once you've pulled them apart, connect the two sides down the middle like that, and voila! You've got yourself a little bed for your pepperoni and mozzarella cheese. Now, start off with a little pepperoni - I'm using pepperoni today, but feel free to use salami or sausage if you prefer. Next, add some hand-shredded mozzarella cheese - it melts so much more than pre-shredded cheese, trust me on this one.
Now, cut four strips and do the same to the other side of the triangle. Watch as I take one strip and wrap it in that mummy-like fashion. Take the other strip and overlap it, creating a crisscross effect. And there you have it - your stromboli is starting to look like a little mummy! For the eyes, I've got some green olives with a little pimento in the center. You see how they're already looking like little mummies? Now it's time to add the finishing touches - brush that butter sauce all over the top of your stromboli and pop it into the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes.
Once your stromboli is done baking, take it out of the oven and let it cool down for a bit. And then...the fun part! I get to use my mummy stroli as dippers in a delicious sheet pan tomato soup that I'm making later today. It's one of my favorite things about Halloween - getting to do fun stuff with friends and family, like making crescent rolls and eating all the candy we can handle.
