Audi's Big News at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show: The Audi Ron Concept

The Audi Ron concept is certainly making waves at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, and it's easy to see why. With an astonishing 370 kW of power on boost, 590 Nm of torque, and a claimed range of 500 km, this car is set to be a real contender in the off-road racing world. But what really sets it apart is its incredible focus on aerodynamics.

We're joined by Dr. Mon Islam, the chief aerodynamicist on the project, who is here to give us a closer look at some of the very clever features that make this car so special. Let's start around the front of the car and see what catches our eye. As you can see, we've got active cooling air shutters on the bonnet, which open and close depending on the heat load of the cooling elements and climatization system. This not only reduces the drag caused by the cooling system but also gives us a more aerodynamic profile overall.

Moving further back, we've got virtual wing mirrors that are actually cameras in disguise. These pop out when needed, providing a clear view of the road behind without the need for traditional mirrors. And what's really interesting here is how much of an impact these can have on drag reduction. According to Dr. Islam, a typical pair of wing mirrors for an SUV would account for about 10 counts in drag, which would reduce the car's overall range by around 6 km in the city. But with the virtual wing mirrors, we're able to cut that down to just 0.25, making this car a real speed demon.

One of the other areas where Audi has made some significant improvements is in the wheel area. Traditionally, this can be a bit of a challenge for aerodynamicists, but here they've taken a different approach. By incorporating a passive venting system, which helps to reduce drag by drawing air out from under the wheels, we're able to create a much smoother profile on the car's underside.

Of course, all these clever features wouldn't be possible without some really innovative design work. And that's where Dr. Islam and his team come in. They've done an incredible job of shaping the car's body to maximize aerodynamics, while also ensuring it remains safe and comfortable for occupants. As we move around the car, you can see just how well they've done their job - there are no visible seams or gaps in the design, giving this car a truly streamlined look.

But what really sets the Audi Ron concept apart is its use of technology to enhance off-road performance. By incorporating advanced sensors and systems that monitor the car's surroundings, Dr. Islam and his team have been able to create a real-time feedback system that allows the driver to adjust their driving style on the fly. This not only helps to improve traction but also reduces wear and tear on the car, making it a more sustainable option for off-road enthusiasts.

Audi is being pretty punchy in terms of its production prospects for this car, saying that it could be on the road by 2018. While we can't yet confirm those exact plans, one thing's for sure - the Audi Ron concept is a game-changer in the world of off-road racing. With its incredible combination of power, aerodynamics, and innovative technology, this car is set to be a real rival to the likes of Tesla.

that's 590 for torque but the biggest thing is of saying that it'll have a range of 500 km and a large amount of that is down to aerodynamics so with me here is the chief aerody damis on the project Dr Mon Islam and we're going to have a look at some of the very clever features on this car so thank you very much talking to this should we start around the front of the car a few of the few of things around here um as you can see here on the Bonnet we've got uh the active cooling air shutters um these open and close depending on the uh heat load of the cooling elements and the climatization system and so uh if we close them we reduce the uh the cooling drag the so-called cooling drag the component of drag that's part of coming from the cooling um the next thing as we go further back uh we've got the virtual Wing mirrors here these are very cool so these These are cameras that then pop out yes um presumably when when you just when you need them I suppose yes so um yeah we have no more mirrors you know for aerodynamicist uh mirrors are really a terrible part of the vehicle and so we were able to get rid of those and we now have uh these virtual Wing mirrors uh a typical pair of wing mirrors for uh an SUV vehicle accounts for about 10 counts in drag so if this vehicle now it has 0.25 if it had a proper Wing mirror uh conventional Wing mirror it would have 26 so these 10 counts in drag they would reduce the driving range by 6 km in the nedc driving miror that's right excellent and then we've got a passive thing down here which is effectly sort of I suppose race cars venting the the front Arch yeah yeah the the whole wheel area of the vehicle is uh generally a difficult area for the aerodynamicist so one of the things that we've uh taken over from our colleagues in the racing department is this uh uh wheel uh wheel housing vent and that helps to reduce the drag in a passive Manner and moving down the side of the car is more again when we move to the rear wheel Arch as well right so as you can see we've got a very nice smooth side thanks to the fact that we have no mirrors anymore door handles are flush and um we've got uh a nice recessed Rock ER which gives the uh the vehicle a feeling of lightness and the off-road character The Rocker is the S basically the here yeah yeah um but for the aerodynamicist this isn't great because it it exposes the rear wheel so what we have is uh we have an active uh active panel here at the rocker which uh extends outward and covers the rear rear wheel thereby reducing the drag the uh the rear part of any vehicle is really the most important part for the aerodynam assis so we did a lot of work on this first of all in a basic shape so um we actually want to make the rear of the vehicle as small as possible we have an extendable roof spoiler um and an extendable rear diffuser one thing that you can't see right now unfortunately is the the very flat and smooth underbody um we've got a perfectly uh closed perfectly flat perfectly smooth underbody we've got a surface coating of the underbody which is is derived from the skin of a shark so it has a very small um uh small texture small fins in it uh which reduce the the friction drag thereby reducing the total drag altoe so it's really uh a pretty complete concept and brings us down to this very low drag value for an SUV fantastic D thank you very much indeed thank you Audi is being pretty Punchy in terms of its production prospects for this car saying that it well could be on the road by 2018 which is quite exciting really not 64.6
