I've Known About Smart Bulbs and RGB Lighting for a While
I've known about smart bulbs and RGB lighting for a while, but I've never taken the plunge to actually install them in my own home. When Philips Lighting got in touch and asked if I wanted to try a range of their Hue lights from their starter kit to their bulbs to their light strips to their Hugo bulbs, I thought absolutely - let's try it out and see what it can do.
I've Kissed Up My Living Room with Smart Bulbs
I've kissed up my living room in a range of Philips Hue smart bulbs. Using the app or your Google Home or Amazon Echo, you can control your lighting in any way you like. You can also set off different room profiles and lighting profiles. If you're like me, who's into smart home tech, this is definitely a must-have.
Currently, I've got my living room on "off", but I can turn it on by saying Alexa to do so. I can also turn on just the light strip behind the TV, which is perfect for movie nights when I've even got the popcorn ready. I'd like to have a bit of ambient light behind the TV, and that's what this smart lighting does - it seriously makes me happy.
Full RGB Color Profiles at Your Fingertips
You've also got full RGB color profiles on the app. You can select different recipes, such as relaxing, and turn them on with the app or say Alexa to do so. This is seriously cool. If you have a house party with your home kits out in these, it's crazy, and you can actually set it to go through a color wheel - basically, you can have a rave in your own living room who wouldn't want that?
Smart Lighting for Atmosphere and Ambience
Whether you're playing games or watching movies, having a range of Hue lighting could really make a difference to the atmosphere and ambience. It's not just about being able to control your lighting; it's about creating an immersive experience. If you're a massive nerd like me, who thinks this is pretty cool, where did you get started?
Getting Started with Philips Hue
Well, as it says on the tin, conveniently, the Philips Hue starter pack is your best bet. You get three full RGB bulbs and the Philips Hue bridge, which is crucial because that's what connects all the bulbs together. The bridge plugs into the wall and then gets connected to your router. From there, you can use the app to find all the smart tech you've installed - it's a great place to start.
You can then invest in more bulbs or maybe even a light strip like I have behind my TV. Philips Hue has also got battery-powered Hugo bulbs that are actually battery-powered and can be wirelessly turned on and off. And if you're not averse to flicking a switch, there's the Hue Switch Lighting available - it's got tap switches and motion detector accessories.
Tips for Customizing Your Smart Lighting
So, what do you get out of smart lighting? You get to really tinker with it, customize it, and make it exactly the way you want. It's not just about turning lights on and off; it's about creating an experience that fits your mood and style.
