We paid $200,000 for an abandoned lighthouse! Our first time inside Wolf Trap Lighthouse!
**Exploring the Eastern Shore Lighthouse**
We have an open hatch here and we're going to have to get that sealed up. This has a solid iron floor with some rusting on the edges, but not too bad. It needs good blasting and painting, but it's in decent shape considering most of the windows are above deck. For an earlier design, earlier than Hooper Island, they did a really nice job. So, it's held up well.
**Inspecting the Iron Floor**
The iron floor has a unique pattern on it that must be the hatch right there. Let's go out and take a closer look at the railing, which is dangerously low. We don't want people hanging out here without a safe barrier. The railing is in good shape, but we might have to put a little higher thing on there for safety purposes. There are some nice ball pineal things at the top of the railing, all metal floor not rusted. It's interesting to note that they must have made this structure out of some unique iron.
**Examining the Outside Walls**
The outside walls are solid too, with windows that have been cocked and a cool little ball with a spire on top. They're in great shape, and it's awesome to see all the wind up here for turning a wind generator, which gives us power. This is where the solar panels were when the Coast Guard operated this lighthouse. We might just keep those and install some new solar panels.
**Reaching the Top of the Lighthouse**
We're now at the top of the lighthouse, and we can see that we're in the southern part of Chesapeake Bay, almost near the mouth of it. We're about 15 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, where most traffic comes in except for Norfolk-bound ships. The Eastern Shore is like Cape Charles, with a lot of ships making their way up the channel.
**The Old Light**
There's a boat out there that might be what replaced this old light. We don't know if it lights at night or not, but it's definitely an interesting sight. Let's head downstairs to take a look at the basement and conclude our tour.
**Downstairs in the Basement**
As we walk down the stairs, we see some type of high voltage equipment in the corner. There's also a small hallway leading out of this room, which connects to the other side. The interior walls are lined with paint, and there's even a raised platform where the sister would be stored. There's water still present in the sister tank.
**The Storage Room**
We find another storage room here, but it doesn't lead anywhere. It will let some nice light in when we replace the hatch. Let's see if this open hatch works by opening it and checking out the condition of the floor. The floor is in decent shape again, with a unique brick pattern made from brick on top of brick.
**The Concrete Raised Platform**
There's a raised platform here that was previously filled with concrete. We don't know why it was done that way or what purpose it serves. It makes the room less usable and lowers the ceiling height.
**Other Storage Rooms**
We come across another storage room with a metal door on it, which doesn't seem to serve any particular purpose. There's also a pipe that might be used for cleaning or drawing water from the basement.
**The Final Lookaround**
As we finish our tour of the lighthouse basement, we're left with a sense of awe and appreciation for the craftsmanship and construction of this historic structure. With some TLC and proper maintenance, it can become an amazing space once again.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is Wolf trp Lighthouse after going up for auction in 2005 this Lighthouse has exchanged hands multiple times before finally ending up in our care come with us on a tour as we show you the Good the Bad and the Ugly of Wolf Trap lighthouse we are the lighthouse centers here we go all right all right first time we've been out and we're going to do a quick tour and see what we find um a lot of rust in the dock area but much nicer setup than at Hooper Island we can um climb up on the inside of the ladder so you're not in fear of falling down into the water this outside rail is broken and rusted out in places but pretty strong in other places what's really cool are these uh the bricks in this pattern on the floor when we get that uh on the first deck when we get that all cleaned up it'll be nice you can see it tilts so the water runs in here and down there which will be nice when you're climbing up there and water running down on you lots of bird poop um this isn't too bad I want to restore the original brick and not paint it so we're going to get all the paint removed and we'll put a sealer on here but this brick this is from 1894 and look it's in really nice shape a lot of sand showing in in this uh the grout really nice um very thrilled with that and I love the pattern on the floor just about all the windows are missing um that sucks but we can deal with it we can put all new uh historically correct windows in it and it'll look beautiful this is where the ouse was and I assume it's down there right now so we're going to have to get uh some type of lift crane we're going to have to find it and um and lift it up and put the ouse back into place and Bol it in there looks like this just snapped right off and uh the bricks were torn up you see concrete under there at least that's good there's solid concrete and uh here's a real old winch amazing super strong heavy duty so cool um not going to turn until we get that blasted and greased and and working again but really cool system I guess oh you would turn you would turn it here and then it would turn the whole thing awesome so that it's a gear reduction there uh this goes right down into the the basement probably a coal shoot you can see there's an angle there where it pushes it out uh something was here to lift maybe to get the coal and things up and then right down in there but brick bricks are okay here's some damage to the bricks coming around front door let's just take a little walk continue walk around we have some good uh threaded Rod coming out there to Anchor oh that would have been like a little Awning or something that was over the door oo there's nothing holding that in let's just put that down there and this one too so don't want anyone leaning on that but the uprights are are there okay definitely going to need some repair and here's where we started the trip uh marked by a dead bird okay so interior um looks like the original floor is here that looks like Oak and uh looks like they put some some type of flooring on top so it looks worse than it is and this would probably some type of pine just has really heavy uh thick paint peeling off of it uh but but the wood's there so it's all there um brick years and years of paint but the Brick's there so we'll be able to blast that up clean that up original trim not bad uh piles of paint on the floor here 's a little storage room right off the main uh foyer I think this might have been a bathroom look there's a that looks like a toilet plange almost which that's pretty cool um some pretty bad wall uh stuff like paneling almost in here but this would be a great place for a bathroom if it wasn't already and have this piping here I don't know what that exactly was but perfect for a little bathroom so I would assume that that's what that is okay floor okay we see what was there somebody just did that old you see it in all the old houses um where they just keep nailing floors on top of floors on top of floors and it looks like uh they did a little bit of that here uh some kind of plywood walls pretty bad we'll probably rip that off and see what's underneath and replace it with something big pie watch your step Thomas we have nails sticking up on top of plywood so all in all in here looks like not original trim but the walls are there no holes in the floor like we've seen in other lighthouses um and again a lot of original wood not not rotted through um there's a chimney uh entrance there probably had a little wood stove in here back in the day so another room one of these rooms would be the kitchen and then it would be maybe like a sitting area or something you have double windows here so beautiful view of the western shore from here with these nice tall Windows which is nice and again wood okay okay not a ton of wood work maybe this this is the original trim uh no frills just a nice Square trim could be original Okay so we've seen the first floor let's go upstairs Thomas um a little turn in the stairs then a straight run and then another turn so this wall is all brick and the interior which is awesome because that'll clean up nicely and look beautiful uh the sails the the the wide angle shot of this um in that online thing uh that where they had the pictures of it for sale made it look like this was like this huge Grand foyer with the you know rais stairway and stuff which it is for a lighthouse yeah it's really awes but it's not it's not huge it's nice and cozy um so you come up here you got like a twoot wide walkway coming around uh little storage closet very nice uh window that will put a nice window in there and then that'll that'll be a nice view out of here cool little piece of trim painted gray I wonder if that was aim original same thing on this side that's I think that's metal I think that's metal that's really cool um and nice arched doorway made out of brick beautiful this stuff's intact okay we have we have a lot of stuff to work with just a lot of cleaning cleaning and repainting so um it's some really good shape yeah cleaning and repainting uh is is the most of it I mean on the outside we have some major welding and structural stuff we do but as far as the interior so here we have a little ladder I don't know where this goes seems um all right so we have just a little attic and might be access to the roof up there all right here we have some some floor damage so those floor boards are going to have to be replaced all in all not bad though um this bedroom has a nice closet that's a deep closet for a lighthouse window needs to be put in um again uh portal for wood stove in the chimney here brick all right that has a hole in it so we're going to not step much in here there's there's more holes and stuff here all in all not bad though tells us that water got in from from somewhere to rock the floor out so we're going to have to look up there uh in the Attic same thing on this side I don't know why that water came maybe it just kept coming in through the windows um so that's rotted out not bad though again nice closet nice little bedroom I don't think we can get a queen siiz bed in here but um definitely a twin not bad though let's go up to the watch room all four walls are brick which means these interior walls um are loadbearing solid brick into the middle of the house which is so cool makes it so strong um something uh probably water damaged got in here cracked these wall so we're going to have to check the structural Integrity you can see this from the outside right below the lantern actually there is there is an opening where water was getting through all right so here's the ladder up to the light it's very solid no problem there all right the Osprey just took off so there's our Osprey our uh house Osprey flying around uh here she likes to sit right there and all right so here's the lantern room this light was dis uh decommissioned probably 2017 I think it was so um due to the light uh house being in such poor condition that the Coast Guard did not like to access it um we have an open hatch here we're going to have to get that sealed up uh this has a solid iron floor rusting a bit on the edges there but not too bad not bad though uh needs good blasting and painting but interesting pattern it's probably in such good shape cuz most of the windows are up here all except for that yeah uh for an earlier design earlier than Hooper uh they did a really nice job so it's held up really well we have the tin roof and an octagon of glass with metal below and a really nice heavy um Iron floor with a pattern in it uh that must be the hatch right there that would go on the floor so let's go out uh there's Matt watching the boat uh this railing is dangerously low you do not want to be we we might have to put a little higher thing on there if people are going to be hanging out so um so railings in good shape neat little uh ball pineal things at the top uh all metal floor not rusted they must have really made this out of some interesting iron and the outside is solid too Windows have been cocked uh cool little ball with a spire on top top up there all in great shape awesome have some nice wind up here for turning a wind generator giving us power here's where the solar panels were when the Coast Guard did operate it we might just keep those and and put some solar panel there well we're up here at the top of the lighthouse let's take a look around we are in in the the southern part of the ches Peake Bay almost near the mouth of it uh we're about 15 mi from the uh ches Peake Bay Bridge Tunnel uh where the bay meets the ocean so all the traffic coming in except for you know Norfolk and stuff uh anything north of here is coming through so you see a lot more ships um than we see at Hooper Island here so that's the Eastern Shore uh like Cape Charles and stuff and a lot of ships um making their way up the channel um that booy out there might be what replaced this uh light that I don't know if that lights at night or not but um that's the marker let's go downstairs take a look at the basement and then we'll conclude the tour who's that stumbling around in the dark all right when we were above we saw that shoot uh where the coal and stuff came in uh that's this little room there's a little hallway down there too um let's take a look and see what's down there does it just connect to the other side yes walk through Rick interior walls wow was there some type of high voltage here interesting so no no portal window here in this room so that's always going to be dark but the ceiling's in decent shape lots of paint got lots of paint remov here's a door nice it's here still works nice and heavy um there's a raised platform here where the sistern would be and I don't know why it's raised water still in there lots of water in the sister that's cool no sea monsters in there I mean some say the lighthouse is haunted here's a a but looks like a bench but it's not a bench it's something for putting something raised up high on um pour the window severely wased that's going to take some work to get open ones that Hooper Island are in really good shape all right similar storage room except this one doesn't go anywhere uh that will let some nice light in when we replace it let see if this open okay floor is in decent shape again really cool brick pattern brick on brick it's going to be so nice why this concrete raised platform is here I'll never know very uh makes the room a lot less usable ceiling's still decently High um there was a hatch for bringing stuff into the basement that's cool here's a storage room with a metal door on it don't know why that was maybe to fire f for something um you can hear Matt out there making noises yawning and stuff uh there's a pipe to clean down here I don't know where it went or why but we might be below that bathroom what is this oh that's going to be a water pipe so maybe for drawing water out of the b or something cooling or something maybe I don't know maybe a generator R down here so we have the arched brick it's very smooth it might have been like plastered over in decent shape all in all lots of cleaning um just tons of paint to to get off of the wood and the brick and then it's going to make a amazing transformation and it's going to be beautiful so thank you guys for coming along with the tour and we're going to get out of here before before the boat gets smashed against the lighthouse we'll see you all in all not bad
