Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Book3 Ultra _ Hands-On Impressions!

Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra was announced at today's event, and it brings several exciting features to the table. The new device boasts a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a quad-camera setup that includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, which is comparable to Apple's 48-megapixel raw photos offered on the iPhone. The camera system also features optical image stabilization, which has improved in low-light situations and video recording capabilities, including 8K video at up to 30 frames per second.

Samsung's object-based AI technology will bring out better characteristics and detail of a person's facial features, such as hair and eyes. Additionally, the device offers improved night portraits and Astro hyperlapse mode for capturing cool videos of the night sky. The selfie camera has also been upgraded with autofocus, which is a feature now available on new iPhones. The performance of the S23 Ultra is powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.

The design of the S23 Ultra is largely similar to its predecessor, but one notable difference is that it feels different in the hand, with a squared-off and rounded shape. Samsung confirmed this to us during our visit to their headquarters. The device also features the S Pen, which comes with a full suite of S Pen features. Although we didn't get a chance to check out some of the new UI modes, there is a new "Modes and Routines" feature that sounds similar to Apple's Focus modes.

One thing to note about Samsung devices is their deep levels of customization, which will be interesting to see with this new feature. While Apple did improve its focus mode in iOS 16, it still has some things that need to be customized on the user's end. We can't wait to check out the Modes and Routines feature and compare it to Focus modes.

In addition to the S23 Ultra, Samsung also announced several other Galaxy Book devices, including the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360, which can flex into a 360-degree tablet, taking advantage of its S Pen. There is also a regular Galaxy Book 3 Pro and the high-end Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, both featuring a 3K OLED display in a 16:10 aspect ratio.

The display on these laptops is right up there with the MacBook Pro's mini LED display, and it might even be better. Our brief time with the device showed better contrast and deeper blacks than what we usually see on mini LED displays, and minimal blooming. This is also true across the entire Galaxy Book 3 lineup.

In terms of performance, the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra comes with a 13th gen Intel Core I9 processor and an Nvidia RTX GeForce 470 GPU. While we've been out of the PC game for quite some time since Apple switched to its own Apple silicon, our guess is that these specs are good and would keep up in performance in most areas.

If you want to see a full comparison between the new Ultra Galaxy Book 3 and the new MacBook Pros with the M2 Max chip, let us know in the comments. We'd love to hear your thoughts on what Samsung announced today's event, so be sure to leave a comment below and thanks for watching MacRumors, we'll see you around in the next video.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso Samsung has just dropped its latest flagships for 2023 with the brand new Samsung Galaxy s23 the s23 plus and the s23 ultra along with some new Galaxy books that are honestly really intriguing uh because they're some of the best laptop displays that I have ever seen it's an OLED display to be precise and it's right up there with Apple's mini LED on the MacBook Pros but before we get into all of that I'll have chapters below so you can skip around if you want to but please like And subscribe if you end up liking this video but the most important thing I'd want you to do right now is let me know in the comment section what you think of these devices from Samsung let's keep it civil of course I mean you can't do it right now you have to watch the video but afterwards let me know what you think and again keep it civil but I always enjoy checking out major Flagship competitors and Samsung is always at the top of that list now with that said let's go over what's new with the latest devices and honestly at first glance I would not blame you if you thought I was holding an s22 from last year but if you look at the new S1 23 and the s23 plus you'll see that there's no more camera bump but instead it's just kind of that row of floating cameras like what we saw on the s22 ultra from last year and of course that same design carries over to the s23 for this year the s23 ultra now the biggest change to all of these new phones comes in the camera department but primarily the s23 ultra now offers a new 200 megapixel sensor it does use pixel binning to support different levels of high resolution processing but the result from this camera and again I briefly tested these phones in New York City for like an hour and I was able to capture some of it on film but I wasn't able to take the photos off of the phone but from what I saw and when I took the picture of this chair you can see so much detail in this orange chair here there's a lot of all the fibers and stuff in that chair and then the lemons from across the room and I was a pretty far distance away and I was able to zoom in afterwards and you don't lose a whole lot of quality in these images there's a lot of retention here that looks really really good at least during my brief time at looking at those images and of course I will be doing a full-on camera test between the iPhone 14 pro Max and Samsung's s23 Ultra and so please be sure to subscribe so you don't miss that video but again I was pretty impressed at a lot of these uh pictures that I was getting especially with that 200 megapixel sensor Samsung is also offering that expert raw mode again that enables DSLR style image shooting and editing in raw and JPEG but this year you can shoot those images at 50 megapixels raw instead of the previous 12 megapixels that you got on the s22 and that standard across the lineup and not limited to the ultra and it's intriguing because well apple offers 48 megapixel Raw photos and this is 50 and so it's pretty comparable and again something that I do want to test ois or Optical image stabilization has improved in low light situations especially with video on the s23 ultra and you can now record 8K video enhanced at up to 30 frames per second and Samsung is also offering its object-based AI to bring out better characteristics and detail of a person's facial features for example such as hair and eyes and so hopefully it should improve those characteristics and lastly with the cameras Samsung has offered improvements in nitography capabilities with improved night portraits as well as Astro hyperlapse mode that allows you to take cool videos of the night sky and oh by the way that selfie camera has been upgraded and features autofocus which is what the new iPhones feature and so that'll be another thing that we'll emphasize in our full camera test other than that performance got a boost with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip the design of the s23 ultra is largely similar to the s22 ultra but one thing I did notice was that in the hand it felt different like it's squared off and rounded at the same time I asked a Samsung wrap while I was there and they confirmed that that's not something that I'm making up in my head it does feel different and it's confusing to say but that's just how I can describe it and then of course you get the S Pen here with the full fledged Suite of S Pen features and I didn't get a chance to check out in person uh some of the new UI modes but there is a new modes and routines feature which sounds very similar to Apple's Focus modes now one thing about other devices especially Android phones is the Deep levels of customization and so it will be interesting to see if the new modes and routines feature will be more feature Rich and customizable than Apple's Focus modes one thing to note about other devices especially Android Samsung devices is the Deep levels of customization and so it will be interesting to see if the new modes and routines feature will be more feature Rich and more customizable than Apple's Focus modes because I think while Apple did improve that in iOS 16 there are still some things that need to be changed and customized on the user's end and so I can't wait to check it out and kind of put it up against each other and see which Focus mode or modes and routines is better now there were also a few other Galaxy books announced today like I said at the beginning of this video there was one that could Flex itself into 360 Degrees all the way into this gigantic tablet that of course takes advantage and uses an S Pen that's the galaxy book 3 Pro 360. there's a regular galaxy book 3 Pro and then the galaxy book 3 Ultra which has a crazy high-end level of performance but all of these laptops feature a 3K OLED display in a 16 by 10 aspect ratio and I think it's right up there with the MacBook Pro's mini LED display it might even be better but again my time was limited so I don't want to jump to conclusions all the way here but my brief time with it there was better contrast and deeper blacks than what I can see usually on the mini LED displays and I didn't see a whole lot of blooming if at all and that's something that the mini LED displays on the MacBook Pros kind of have in certain situations and so again this is also across the entire galaxy book 3 lineup and basically it's like looking at a larger version of Samsung's phones displays and those are already so good and I really like those and so so getting that on a larger display for your laptop is something that I'm definitely intrigued in now in terms of performance for the ultra it's offering a 13th gen Intel Core I9 processor and an Nvidia RTX GeForce 470 GPU and I feel like those specs are good but I'll admit I've been out of the PC game for quite some time and since Apple switched over to its own Apple silicon I have no idea how good those Intel I9 chips are doing but my guess is it's probably very good and would keep up in performance in most areas but I have to put those to the test and if you want to see the full comparison between oh I don't know the new Ultra galaxy book 3 and the new Macbook Pros with the M2 Max chip then let me know down in those comments and also just let me know what you thought of everything that Samsung announced at today's event and of course this
