**The Elgato FaceCam Neo: A Web Cam Review**
As I unboxed the Elgato FaceCam Neo, I couldn't help but notice its sleek design and compact size. This is a PS2 memory card, which is an interesting find as it seems out of place in a web cam device. The autofocus feature on this model is clear, but it's not exactly impressive. It appears to be contrast-based and has a noticeable overshoot before focusing back onto the subject.
The camera's ability to capture depth of field is quite decent, allowing for acceptable focus on small subjects while recording video. However, I did notice some pulsing as it tried to find its focus again, which can be distracting at times. The quality of the image is pretty decent, especially considering this is a webcam. Keep in mind that webcams are not always the top priority for users, and most people will be happy with whatever they have.
The colors captured by the Elgato FaceCam Neo are honestly impressive, even on my large iPad display. I was able to get a spot-on representation of my skin tone, which is no easy feat. However, I did notice that there were some hot spots from the exposure with my lighting setup. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the image quality.
**Comparing to Other Webcams**
To give you a better idea of what this webcam can do, I decided to compare it to other webcams in the market. First up is the Elgato FaceCam Mark II, which has autofocus but a wider field of view. However, the overall image quality is less desirable compared to the Mark II. The FaceCam Mark I, on the other hand, has a slightly smoother image, but it's not as good as the Neo.
The Logitech Brio 100 is another webcam that caught my eye. It requires you to stand way back, which can be a problem for most users. The resolution is only 1080p30 and pre-compressed, making it less desirable compared to other webcams on the market. However, if you're just looking for something basic, it might suffice.
**Retro Webcams: A New Trend**
I've been experimenting with retro webcams lately, which has led me to create a series of videos showcasing their capabilities. It's amazing how much these old devices can still capture high-quality video and images. The Elgato FaceCam Neo is definitely one of the better options in this category.
If you're interested in getting a retro webcam for your projects or just for fun, I'd recommend considering the Elgato FaceCam Neo. It's an easy option to set up and use, and it's definitely worth the investment if you're looking for high-quality video capture. **Conclusion**
The Elgato FaceCam Neo is a solid addition to any web cam collection. While it may not be perfect, its autofocus feature and image quality make it a great option for those looking for a reliable webcam. With its compact size and sleek design, it's definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a new webcam.
As I continue to experiment with retro webcams, I'm excited to see what other devices I can find and showcase their capabilities. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enI had my doubts about this whole budget line Elgato Neo they're appealing to more normal people people might that might just be doing video conferencing or teaching online or school meetings whatever they've got the microphone I'm using here they've got the capture card I've covered that was all right but like fit kind of weird in with everything else this webcam surprised me in the fact that I actually like it and I think it would be a good to go with as your first webcam if you're willing to spend a buck for it but it's still high enough in price that if you really wanted a budget webcam you're probably buying one of the more junkier ones and then upgrading to an even better one past this or alternatively I think it makes the face cam Mark II that Elgato also just released kind of pointless this is the Elgato face cam Neo it's 1080p60 mv12 I'm recording it on the iPad here recreating my Elgato Neo iPad set up uh so it is recording a little bit more compressed 1080p60 I obviously have it on auto since it's on the iPad although you could pull up camera Hub on your computer and do full manual control with your shutter speed your ISO settings and all of that obviously the auto exposure moves a little bit as my Center weighted face kind of changes brightness but like it's got that weird grain noise in some contrast areas uh that most 1080p webcams are going to have it's got autofocus this is a PS2 memory card there we go it is not very fast autofocus it is clearly like contrast based and it has to overshoot and then come back like kind of reminds me of the old Panasonic autofocus that a lot of us compared about here complained about here on YouTube as an even more intricate detail idea here's a miniature that I'm currently priming to paint like you can get some acceptable depth of field here and focus on small stuff while you're talking which is really nice you have to be okay with the pulsing as it tries to find your focus again that's really nice quality isn't amazing Auto settings are pretty nice hello Focus this happens sometimes there we go there we go the quality is pretty decent for what it is for a webcam keep in mind it's a webcam you're going to be doing video calling where your quality is going to be trashed anyway or if you're streaming you're putting it in a corner over top your gameplay most people don't care that much about their face cam quality to be using big mirrorless cameras like a lot of us YouTubers streamers do it's fine the colors honestly look great even on this big beautiful iPad display that has really good colors like my skin tone is pretty much spoton I've got a couple hot spots from the exposure with my lights here I got both elato Neo uh key lights here I'm pretty impressed if we flip over and compare it to the face cam Mark II did this work this is the face cam Mark I it has a wider field of view but it does not have autofocus so pretty much everything is in Focus so if I get up close on it like I'm kind of detailed in here but everything's still in Focus if I want to pull up little stuff to show off like you can kind of do it but you're obviously you're not focusing the user's attention The Wider field of view is nicer than the face cam Neo but the overall image quality just has this weird soft kind of Muddy to it muddiness to it most of the time it's this weird trade-off I covered in my original review of The Mark I where I felt like the colors and some of the crunchiness on the original Elgato face cam were more undesirable compared to the Mark II um but the Mark I has a little bit of smoothness compared to the Neo it's this weird Hot Potato game where if you need the wider field of view the face cam Neo or the face cam Mark II is definitely the way to go here but the autofocus as not great as it is allows you to do cool stuff with I just threw the memory card but do stuff with little things that I think provides value I think I prefer the FaceCam Neo I have the samples here you can decide for yourself I did want to throw in just as an example of a more budget card the Logitech Brio 100 I have to stand so far back I have no idea if you can hear me I'm recording this after the fact the Logitech Brio 100 requires you to stand way back which is going to be a big problem at desks or laptop setups it's 1080p30 only pre-compressed and it's just it's not a good time it would be fine again for just basic meetings or whatever but then again so is probably whatever built-in webcam you already have access to so you can decide if it's up for you uh up to you the 99 bucks compared to 149 for the mark I I definitely think the Neo should be the default webcam that you look at picking if you are interested in picking up a budget webcam I think it comes with some flaws as everything does I I'm trying to demonstrate just the generic use case here as I think is broadly the most applicable this this is literally what I'm going to send to my mom my mom wants to do some like document not scanning but like flip book kind of videos for some projects she's selling on Etsy and or whatever platforms and needs something for like video conferencing and whatever so I'm sending her an alato multimount in this webcam because I think it's the best easiest option to give and I think it's pretty compelling overall so you all know I don't find webcams super compelling or like entertaining these days but there is a revolution in getting a retro webcam going that I have covered over on my lost saves gaming channel that I'm making at the
