The Art of Breaking Open Old Toys: A Fun Experiment with New and Vintage Finds
As we sat around the table, surrounded by old toys and new ones, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen when we opened up some of our favorite childhood memories. Our mission was to break open some old toys, compare them to their newer counterparts, and see which one came out on top. We started with a batch of chocolate-filled eggs that had been sitting around for 20 years. As we carefully unwrapped the wrappers, we noticed that they were quite different from the modern-day versions.
The old egg wrapper was a simple rectangle, while the new one had a more complex design with a hinge that opened into two bars. We couldn't resist trying them out and sawing into each other's chocolate to compare the contents. The old egg turned out to have a tiny Minion figurine inside, which was now accompanied by a few pieces of candy. Meanwhile, my own egg had a small anchor-shaped toy piece. It was clear that some toys were more innovative than others.
Next, we decided to test our grapple hook toys. I pulled mine apart, and it revealed a surprisingly intricate design with many moving parts. My friend's version, on the other hand, was much simpler in comparison. But what really caught my eye was the camera that came with one of the older sets. It was an actual working camera that allowed us to take pictures through its lens. I couldn't believe how advanced it was for its time.
As we continued to break open and compare our toys, we discovered some other interesting features. One toy had a special "anchor" piece that could be attached to a building, allowing us to swing from it like Spider-Man. Another had a sticker that was supposed to be used to decorate the outside of a model car, but unfortunately, it had lost its stickiness over time.
Despite their quirks and imperfections, some toys remained surprisingly resilient. My friend's Lego set, in particular, stood up remarkably well after being built for several days. Meanwhile, my own toy mouse came apart at the seams when I tried to release it from a special " trap." It was clear that not all toys were created equal.
In the end, we had to come to terms with the fact that some toys are more fun to use than others. The camera was definitely a winner in our book, while my friend's Lego set took the cake for sheer complexity and durability. But perhaps the most important lesson we learned was that even old toys can still bring joy and excitement into our lives.
As we wrapped up our experiment and began to put the pieces back together, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. There's something special about revisiting old toys and remembering the fun times we had with them when we were younger. And who knows? Maybe one day we'll pass these same toys down to our own children and watch as they experience the magic for themselves.
The experience was not without its mishaps, however. As I attempted to stick a sticker onto my toy mouse, it lost its adhesive properties and refused to adhere. "You don't need instructions for that part," my friend chuckled, laughing at my misfortune. And when I tried to use my grapple hook toy to build a structure, I found myself struggling with the awkward design.
Despite these setbacks, we had an absolute blast breaking open old toys and comparing them to their newer counterparts. It was a fun experiment that allowed us to appreciate the quirks and charms of both old and new toys. And who knows? Maybe next time around, we'll be ready for whatever surprises come our way.
As we wrapped up our adventure and headed off into the sunset, I couldn't help but wonder what other secrets our old toys held within their worn and weathered exteriors. Perhaps it's time to dig them out again and see if they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. After all, as the great philosopher once said, "You can't have too much of a good thing – especially when it comes to toys!"
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enWelcome to how to cook that I'm Ann Reardon and this is Jed and today we are making a giantKinder Surprise egg and inside we have some surprises, and we also have some kinder surprises that aretwenty years oldSo there's some old kinder surprisesAnd we're gonna compare what the old ones are like compared to the new ones so first of all let's make this thingAnd then we'll come back and smash it first of all I'm going to wash out my balloon using some oilJust to get rid of any little bits of residue inside the balloonI'm using oil and not water because water makes chocolate seize and go lumpyCan you see those tiny bits so really really tiny but there's some little bits that have come out there?Put some chocolate into a bowl and melt it in the microwaveStirring it every 30 seconds until it's melted and it has no lumps in itNext you need to temper your chocolateI have a whole video showing you how to do that and I'll link to that at the endTempering just makes sure the chocolate will set firm at room temperature. Pour that through a funnelinto your balloon and once that is full of chocolate you want to inflate the balloon just blow it up andthen tie it in a knot like you normally would andThen turn the balloon to spread the chocolate all the way around so you can't see any gapsThat one's looking pretty good, so I'm just gonna leave that on a bowl to setWhat happened?! After we had a couple of minutes of sitting there perfectly fine the balloon just randomly popped and now there's chocolate everywhereWell that one didn't workAttempt number two I flipped the chocolate inside the balloon and blowing it upJust like last time, but this time when I'm tipping it. There's just not enough chocolate inside the balloon to get it everywhereI'm gonna put this one in the fridge anyway to see if we can get it to sit without the balloon poppingOkay, that's done that worked putting it in the fridge, but when we're peeling off the balloonI can see the chocolate is really thin. So there's just not enough chocolate getting in the balloon before we inflate itNext I tried a bigger balloon, but that one popped too, and at this stage. I think it would be easierJust a shrink ray Jed into my mini kitchen and use a normal-sized finger eggWoah! Its a giant Easter egg i wonder whats insideAhh it's load of new toys! woah, it's like so thin.Okay, I've come up with a new idea that could solve my problemI'm going to use compound chocolate because it sets quicker so that might solve the popping issue and - I'm going to inflate the balloonFirst and then twist it off at the topstretch that over the top of a neck of a bottle andthen let the balloon and twist andpour the chocolate into the balloon from the bottleSo this way I can get heaps more chocolate in there that I could if the balloon was uninflatedAnother pair of hands is helpful when you're doing this so that you can turn the balloon as you're tipping the chocolateonce you've got all that chocolate out of the bottle just tie off your balloon and then begin to tip it justPatiently tipping it and waiting for that chocolate to spread to any spots that don't have any chocolateThat's looking lovely and now I'm gonna get this in the fridge straight away before it pops on meWhile that's setting mixed together some glue that sets clearWith a few drops of dishwashing liquid and some white food coloringUse that mixture to paint the top two-thirds of your foilUsing the dishwashing liquid in here just help stop that paint from beading up onYour foil so that you can spread it out and get a nice covering of the colorWhile it's still wet print out and stick on a Kinder Surprise logo in the middle and you might need to join togetherSeveral sheets of foil I've used three different sheets here to get it wide enough for my egg then do the same thingwith some orange food coloringRemembering to squiggle it up along the border where it joins the white it's not a straight line thereAnd you might need a few coats of orange to get a good colorThen use some permanent marker to make the shadows that are on the drips of the white our egg has set in the fridge withoutpopping yay nowWe need to peel off a small area at the topAnd I'm gonna leave the balloon on the rest of it for now so that I can handle the egg without leavingfingerprints all over that chocolateUse a heated up cookie cutter to cut out a circle from the back of your giant eggThen pipe in some melted white chocolateJust pipe lots in there and then tip the eggTo make sure the whole of the inside is covered so just like we did with the milk chocolateBut now we're doing that layer of white all over the inside put a little bit on your circle, tooSo that it matches the rest of the eggAnd now we want to place some candy or whatever treats you like inside your eggI'm putting in three new Kinder Surprise eggs and threeTwenty-year-old Kinder Surprise eggs so it can compare what the toys were like from back then to nowNext all we need to do is seal up the hole to do that grab some bits of chocolate and stick them justUnderneath and these will hold the circle in place for usSo it doesn't just fall into the egg when we try and put it onAdd some more chocolate to each of those and put the circle into placeThen you can just add more chocolate around the join just to strengthen thatonce that set it's time to carefully peel off the balloon from the outside of the egg because I had aTransparent balloon you almost couldn't see it on thereBut it needs to come off obviously we don't want to serve people chocolate with balloon on it look at that that looks awesomenow you can wrap your egg in foil just like you're wrapping up a present andUse your hands to smooth down the foil so that it fits tight and snugly around your eggAnd now it's time to add wrap it and see what's inside okay go didLook at that chocolate so don't know if you'll be able to break it mm-hmm. Can you give it a go?Maybe try with that bit of your hand, so you're not hurting yourself ready and again and again ready 3 2 1 OhWe're gonna need to have usOkay, should we drop itLet's see if that works.
