DIY Watercolor Ideas for Party Decorations

Creating Custom Party Decorations with Watercolor Technique and Home Printer

Hey guys, custom party decor can be kind of expensive, but doing it all yourself can sometimes be a little overwhelming. So, today I'm going to show you how to decorate an entire party using one simple watercolor technique and your home printer. Here's what you'll need: watercolor paints and a paint palette, a paint brush, a straight edge, thin artist tape, watercolor paper, card stock, and plain printer paper.

I want to confess that when I mentioned watercolor, many of you probably rolled your eyes thinking you need all kinds of artistic ability and like four years of art school. But I promise anyone can do this! It's just two simple steps to get a really cool design. To make this kind of modern herring bone pattern, we're going to tape five vertical lines equidistant across our sheet of watercolor paper. You can kind of smooth the tape down with your finger and I am using a handy straight edge that's 2 in wide so I know how far apart they need to be.

Now, we're going to add in our angled pieces to form our herring bone pattern. Now you can use your straight edge to kind of keep these equal distant or you can eyeball it. You know this is kind of a fuzzy watercolor effect, so don't get so hung up on precision, because once you get all of the color on there, trust me, it's going to look great. You may choose to have them exactly the same distance or I like to have some wide and some narrow just to kind of change up the design.

Now that we've prepared our paper, it's time to paint. Can customize your colors to suit your party. We've let our painting dry for about 15 to 20 minutes and now it's time to remove our tape. Now it's going to rip a little, we want that! Don't freak out because there you have it!

I love about this technique is that you never really know what you're going to get. I painted this one earlier today and this is the one that I'm going to use to make our watercolor party decorations. First thing we need to do make a color copy onto some card stock. Okay, we've got our printed card stock and while I was at it, I made a few copies on plain printer paper.

Now it's time for the fun part! We're going to make our party decorations dress up plain white paper cups with a sleeve cut from printed sheets of your own design. You'll want to use plain printer paper for this. You can use the same technique for fun cupcake wrappers to make a festive party banner. Cut out the designs from sheets of card stock and hot glue to a line of ribbon. Don't forget the invitations! Download the design to your computer to make a custom card for your next event.

These party decorations would be so cute for a summer wedding or baby shower, but they're easy enough to fit together that you could even do it for a casual weekend barbecue. I'll see you guys next time!
