BenQ EX3501R Review - 35' 'HDR' Ultrawide Monitor _ The Tech Chap

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys i'm tom the tech chap and this is the BenQ ex35 oh one our it came out in late 2017 and is the newer and better version of the XR 3501 which has been out for about three years now it's got the same size 35 inch screen but it ups the resolution to 34 40 by 1440 which is ideal for this size they've also trimmed the top and side bezels a bit added support for AMD freesync high dynamic range and they've also added a USB type-c port although on the downside the refresh rate has been dropped from 144 to 100 hertz but it's still pretty good so there's quite a lot that's new here and so as you'd expect the price has gone up a bit as well you can find this for around 750 pounds or 850 dollars the first thing I noticed when I set this up was just how much more room I had on my desk compared to the sooz altra wide I was using considering its massive 35 inch screen it actually has quite a slim low-profile stand which means it doesn't take up that much room on my desk I also like that it comes fully assembled you can just pick it out the box and plunk it on your desk and there's also a handy cutout for your cables in the stand which keeps them tidy and hidden away I think it's a really smart looking martyr with a plastic gray and black rear and a chrome covered stand I like it it's not the most flexible though you can't tilt it and just the height but that's as high as it goes so I found I actually had to blow my chair a bit so I was sat in line with the screen although it does support visa mounting so that would solve that problem you may have also noticed this little thing below the BenQ logo it's a light sensor that detects ambient light and tweaks the brightness of the screen to reduce eyestrain it's pretty neat although you can turn it off if you prefer there's a good selection of ports with two HDMI 2.0 ports a DisplayPort 1.4 two USB a and a USB type-c which can carry the full resolution although only up to 60 Hertz it seems when I tried it with my laptop the only thing I don't like is the buttons to control the on-screen display they're fine once you work out the placements but a simple little joystick would make it so much easier to navigate although you do get a lot of picture mode options including srgb and HDR modes now let's talk about that screen it's 35 inches and it has quite a deep 1800 art curve so you do get that wrap around the immersive feeling which I really like that's the same curve as the latest Samsung ultra wide monitors and like those this also uses a VA panel rather than IPS so you get a much higher contrast ratio 2500 to one to be exact for deeper in Kia blacks and well more contrast between light and dark areas however unlike the Samsung's it doesn't use their fancy quantum dot technology to boost brightness so we're looking at just 300 nits on this Bank U which is fine that's not a major issue except it's not really bright enough to offer a great HDR experience which is one of its selling points so like the vast majority of HDR monitors at the moment yes it does support it so you can watch HD or Netflix movies through the Microsoft edge browser and play games like Battlefield one called Duty World War two and Mass Effect Andromeda in high dynamic range but it won't be a night and day difference you'll see a little bump in the vibrancy of colors brightness and well obviously dynamic range which I do still think is an improvement and a nice feature to have but this is an 8-bit panel with 300 minutes of brightness so it's not true HDR but overall it's a nice to have rather than essential feature now the downsides of a VA panel like this traditionally are less accurate colors and more ghosting with high response times but neither are problems here it's got a 4 millisecond great degre response time and color accuracy is very good covering 100 percent of the srgb and 83% of the Adobe RGB color gamut so as well as playing games I'd happily watch movies and edit videos on this monitor although of course unless you're watching 21 by 9 movies and videos you are gonna get pillarboxing on the side we also get a 100 Hertz refresh rate and aim D free sync the last row of which helps reduce screen tearing in games and is of course only useful if you've got an AMD graphics card I don't at the moment so g-sync would have been better for me although that would have certainly upped the price so the lack of g-sync and the price may put some people off but overall I think it's a great ultra wide gaming monitor HDR is still a bit gimmicky when it comes to PC gaming but as I say it's a nice to have and in games have supported it does make them look better free sync will also be useless to anyone with an Nvidia graphics card but so from that it's a great all-round monitor and I'm really glad Bank you up the resolution to 1440p as 1080p at 35 inches is just not sharp enough and the addition of USBC makes it a good option as a second screen for your laptop so right now as I film this it costs seven hundred and eighty four pounds on Amazon I've put links in the description so it's not cheap but I think it's decent value given the features you get and the quality of that screen so I definitely recommend checking it out but as always I be keen to hear what you think of it and have you joined the ultra wide masterrace yet let me know in the
