**Unisoc's 5G Push: How The T618 Chip Helped The Company Grow in the 40 Market**
Qualcomm's decision to go all-in on 5G, even in the budget category, has created opportunities for Mediatek and Unisock to grow in the 40 market. In fact, 2021 was Unisoc's most successful year by far in recent times. The company even managed to surpass Samsung to become the third biggest chipmaker globally, according to a report by Counterpoint. This success can be attributed largely to the T618 chip, which was first announced in 2019 and has been instrumental for Unisock in achieving this feat.
**The T618 Chip: A Powerhouse in the Making**
In terms of raw CPU power, the T618 is not that different from the Snapdragon 662 on last year's Galaxy Tab E7 or the Helio G80 on the Realme Pad. However, Unisock found the T618 performing better on GPU benchmarks such as 3DMark Wildlife and that reflects on the gaming side of things as well. The TAP A8 can handle PUBG Mobile at HD graphics, which was not possible on its predecessor. Although smooth graphics and ultra frame rates were the optimal settings, Unisock found no trouble playing Injustice 2 at its default settings.
**Day-to-Day Usage: A Mixed Bag**
In terms of day-to-day usage, the base 3GB RAM variant that our reviewer has with them feels rather slow. Apps take some time to load, and multitasking is not that smooth either. Furthermore, with around 10GB of storage already occupied by the system out of 32GB, users won't have much space for their apps and other files. Therefore, our reviewer strongly suggests getting the 64GB variant, which pushes one's budget a little.
**One UI: The Software Superiority**
One aspect that this tablet has an upper hand over the Realme Pad or any other Android tablet is the software. Samsung's experience in making tablets and now foldables has significantly improved One UI for larger screen devices. While new players can only stick with vanilla Android or make the smallest bit of customization to their existing Android skin to fit a bigger display, Samsung has gotten significantly better over the years.
**Samsung Flow and Kids Mode: Software Features that Set the Galaxy Tab A8 Apart**
One new feature on the Galaxy Tab A8 is Samsung Flow, which allows users to connect the tablet to their PC over both wireless and wired mediums. This feature enables users to share messages, share clipboards, and files between the two devices. Additionally, users can even cast their tablet to the PC to enjoy Android apps on a bigger screen.
**Samsung Kids Mode: A Fun and Kid-Friendly Experience**
The other notable software feature is Samsung Kids Mode, which is Samsung's answer to Google Kidspace. This mode is full of fun and kid-friendly content, including games, educational materials, and more. Users can also set parental controls to determine what their children can do inside this bubble, including screen time allowed apps, and more.
**Camera Capabilities: A Mixed Bag**
The 8MP rear camera on the Galaxy Tab A8 is capable of handling things like scanning documents and notes. However, the 5MP front-facing camera will get users through their online classes just fine. In terms of camera performance, the tablet is average at best. Therefore, our reviewer wouldn't be recommending it for photography enthusiasts.
**Battery Life: A Mixed Bag**
In terms of battery life, Unisock was able to get up to 7 hours of screen on time on a full charge. While this is decent, charging the device can be a bit of a hassle due to Samsung only shipping a 7.75W charger inside the box. Although our reviewer used a 15W power brick and it filled up the 7040mAh battery from zero to 100 in just over three hours.
**Conclusion: Is the Galaxy Tab A8 Good Enough for 2022?**
In conclusion, while Samsung still has an upper hand when it comes to software and brand recognition, the competition has caught up significantly. The Galaxy Tab A8 is a good iterative upgrade over the Galaxy Tab A7 but may not be enough for 2022 due to how good the competition has become. Therefore, our reviewer suggests that Samsung needs to bring some major meaningful upgrades with their next tab launch if they want to stay competitive in the budget tablet segment.
