The State of My Home: A Journey of Renovation and Upgrades
As I stand in my basement, surrounded by the remnants of a flooded powder room, I am reminded that this renovation journey has been far from smooth. The issue began with the entire dream line getting plugged up with toilet paper due to a lack of slope on the same line as the Jack and Jill bathroom. This, combined with poor plumbing in front of the existing wall, led to not one but two floods in the powder room.
To fix this, I had to tear out the walls and create a proper slope in that area, which was a daunting task due to the 2x2 studs. My plumber, who did an excellent job on other parts of the house with good plumbing, struggled to make the necessary adjustments in this particular spot. To overcome this hurdle, I decided to build a new wall in front of the existing one, allowing my plumber to access and fix the pipes.
Over the past couple of weeks, I've been busy taking apart various parts of my home to tackle these issues. First, I toured the closet where all the water had accumulated, mapping out a plan to repurpose it as a bathroom. We intended to make the drain from the powder room come down this wall, but we soon discovered that there was only a 2-inch pipe going into the floor, far less than what we expected.
Despite these unexpected discoveries, I pressed on, determined to see my vision through. In another part of the house, I had to poke holes in the ceiling and let out water that had accumulated due to someone leaving their sink running in the laundry room. The lack of an overflow meant it was a total mess, but I took it as an opportunity to reorganize and make some much-needed changes.
In my workshop, I've been eager to upgrade my desk collector for quite some time now. I recently purchased the Laguna p-series, which required the help of my husband due to its weight – 300 pounds is no lightweight! The instructions suggested allowing five to six hours of assembly time, but with a tight deadline looming, we couldn't spare that much time.
So, we had to work at an accelerated pace, flipping the pieces upside down and putting them together before flipping them back right side up. It was quite a challenge, and I'm grateful to have my husband's assistance in this matter. While not all of the Laguna p-series is assembled just yet – some parts are still on the floor – it will eventually become an integral part of my workspace.
Just as things were starting to settle, another issue arose with the master bathroom tub. There was a low leakage that needed addressing before I could proceed. To fix this, I tore into the existing tile work and made an opening in the wall where there should have been better access for repairs. The patchwork of wood that had been added by the builder made it necessary to cut through some areas while leaving others intact.
As the renovation journey continues, I find myself feeling both overwhelmed and determined. It's not often that someone would describe themselves as both "overwhelmed" and "winning," but in this case, those two states are closely intertwined. The uncertainty of what might come next can be daunting, but my determination to see these projects through has me moving forward.
Despite the setbacks, I remain open to any help or advice from friends and family who may stumble upon this post. While the bedroom is no longer available for overnight guests due to the ongoing renovations, a comfortable couch still beckons those willing to lend a hand. In short, if you're ever in the neighborhood and want to lend a helping hand, please don't hesitate to drop by.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys long time no see I just want to show you what I'm doing now I'm in my basement underneath the Jack and Jill bedroom bathroom and I had to tear all of that out because the powder room which is above this closet has flooded twice because the entire dream line got plugged up with toilet paper because there's not enough slope on the same line as the Jack and Jill so and that all has a good slope because I have a good plumber who did that but in front of it not not good plumbing zero slope zero slope where it makes the turn so I had to tear all of this out so my plumber can create slope in that wall which he can't in that wall because it's two by twos so I have to build a proper wall in front of this wall so he can put some pipes in there so um it's been a couple of weeks actually since I've been tearing I first toured this closet out because where all the poopy shitty water came down and then we had a plan that we'd be able to use this bathroom and just make the drain that comes from the powder room come down this wall because there's a clean-out here but mmm there's a two-inch pipe that goes into the floor we thought for sure there'd be a three or four inch you know access down below the CLE no there's not we're just puzzling puzzling what else is happening in our house well this is the garage which I had to poke a bunch of holes in the ceiling and let some water out because somebody left the water running in the sink in the laundry and it totally flooded and there's no overflow that was totally our bad whoa and also I'm messing around with my workshop because I have been wanting to upgrade my desk collector for a long time so I went ahead and bought the Laguna p-series I got that much assembled because it required the help of my husband because it's 300 pounds you have to flip it upside down and put stuff together and then flip it right side up but the rest of its still on the floor right there cuz for the instructions you need to allow for five to six hours of assembly time which means probably 10 to 12 um I don't have time for that and had a low leakage from the master bath tub that goes up there and I had to tear into that to see what was leaking before I figured out that it was the best I either have to cut the tile out because there's no access panel to our jetted tub or cut you know just open this hole up that I already opened up and there's a little patch of wood up there that the Builder obviously put so I can just remove that probably make it a little bigger bigger and my plumber can fix it from here so I opened up some more because I needed to switch up the lighting because I also made this doorway bigger we're going to make this space all of this space in this hallway my workshop well this is like a whole nother big section someday I'll get that together it's two weeks for that to arrive so by the time I got here I didn't even have time to assemble it because I needed to turn down the stuff in the bedroom for the plumber who was coming and then he couldn't get to what he needed to because we found that stupid 2-inch pipe instead about three inch pipes I had to tear down more in that bedroom and then I have to build a wall figure out how to put it back together and all of my workshop stuff is all over because I have this going on I am a little overwhelmed actually periodically I'm a lot overwhelmed some days I feel like I'm just gonna cry but I haven't yet because I think I'm winning I think back to my Chuck in here so I could just dump all the Shh drywall in there so sorry I haven't been around for a while oh my gosh if anybody wants to come and help me I welcome it I no longer have the bedroom for you to stay in downstairs but I have a couch so I hope I'll see you sometime guys I'll see you sometimehey guys long time no see I just want to show you what I'm doing now I'm in my basement underneath the Jack and Jill bedroom bathroom and I had to tear
