The New Features of tvOS 17 and Apple TV: A Comprehensive Guide

features and changes that make it the biggest update to come to the Apple TV in years so the first thing you'll notice after installing tvos 17 is that you now have six quick action icons on the top bar whereas before you were just limited to five and you'll also notice that that goes all the way down so we now have an extra column of applications all the way down the whole screen so I only have one full column here but you get the point it goes all the way down six across and you'll also notice that when you hover over applications you now get a full screen preview of that application like for music it shows the little animation there for Apple arcade it shows a preview and you could also swipe up to get more of a full screen of that so if I swipe up like so you get the full screen you know preview of that application and when navigating through these applications you will see that we have our time and our profile picture up in the top right hand corner at all times and if you press and hold on the TV icon on your remote that will pull up the newly designed control center so this control center looks way better than it did in tvos 16 so we also have access to other controls like we can power off we have a much better looking AirPlay menu we have our game controllers right here and when you go into that you can see your recently connected connected game controllers along with the controller settings a quick shortcut to the controller settings we have our sleep timer our do not disturb our search our Wi-Fi everything just looks so much better here and when we go to do not disturb we can just press on that and you can see the cool little animation on the moon right there and if we go over on this menu right here we have our home as well where we can control our scenes and if you have homekit enabled cameras you will also be able to see your cameras right here so you'll get a picture and picture view the cameras while you're outside of this section in general like if you're in a TV show or on the menu you will get a picture and picture view of those cameras if you have that selected and this sleep timer is also really useful so if you press the sleep timer you can choose if you want a 15 to 2our sleep timer to turn off the Apple TV another really cool feature in tv7 is that if a user uses their iPhone to control the Apple TV via the Apple TV remote in the control center on their iPhone it's going to automatically switch to their profile on the TV itself so for example if Brandon Jr accessed the Apple TV from his iPhone it will switch to his profile on the Apple TV because it registers that he accessed the TV from his iPhone and speaking of profiles Apple also says that additional settings are now saved for user profiles including the system language and also paired airpods so it'll automatically detect your paired airpods on your profile when you connect your airpods you will see the animation in the top right if you have the the second generation Siri remote or newer you can now find your remote via find my so keep in mind this uses Bluetooth and it can only show the distance so there's no Ultra wideband chip in the Siri remote so you're not going to have Precision finding or anything like that but you can still find your remote if you lose it very easily now you might have already noticed this but yes we have FaceTime on the Apple TV now and if you're wondering why in the world would you use that trust me I thought the same thing but now I use it literally almost every day so if you go into the FaceTime app on Apple TV it'll automatically log you in if you're already on the same network and you have you know your device logged into the same Apple ID but if not you could also use any phone that's connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV and then you can just press on other and scan the QR code with that device and what this does is it uses continuity camera from your iPhone you may have to accept it the very first time you do this on your device and you will get a little tutorial on how to set this up properly but most of the time you can just set it up on a mantel like I just set mine up on The Mantel next to my hods and it gives a really good view of myself and then you can see your recent calls over on the left hand side you also have the plus right there where we can make a phone call really quickly or a FaceTime call to anybody in your contacts over on the bottom right hand side we have Center Stage just an on and off button for that so you can turn that on or off we have portrait mode you can turn that on or off off and we have reactions so that is where you can put like a thumbs up to give a virtual thumbs up you can turn that on or off now this is not just for having a casual FaceTime call with another person you can also use this in split view and it allows you to watch shows or movies during share play while also seeing everybody on the FaceTime call so this just takes watching movies and TV shows to a whole new level and this I wish this was here during Co because this would have been an absolute home run it's still a really cool feature though so you also have controls on your iPhone and your iPad to make it easy to transfer the FaceTime call back to those devices like when you pick it up you have controls to easily switch back the FaceTime to just using your phone's front-facing camera and then also if another FaceTime call or another phone call comes in you will get a notification on the TV itself and you can see when you go out of FaceTime you will still have the picture and picture view over here on the right hand side no matter where you go even if I go into an application like app store it's stay there now if you press and hold on the control center button you will see that it moves over for that as well and you also have the control now for your camera so you can see the camera icon and it shows my 14 pro main right there and this is how you can join share play on Apple TV so if you want to start it with the you know your iPhone 14 pro Main in this situation you can do that right here so we're going to do start on Apple TV and now it will join a share play so the other person on the other line in my FaceTime call will now be able to join in and watch the shows with me you'll also see the Privacy buttons in the control center so if you go here up above the power off menu you can see if you used FaceTime for example recently you can click on that and you can see what was using your camera or your microphone which application it was and if you want to get rid of that picture and picture view you can double press on the control center button on the remote double press right there and then press it one more time and you'll get the option for that picture and picture view so you have layout you have hide or you can end the call so if I go to layout for example I can change it from picture picture to split view full screen or just move so if I want to move it to like a different section I can do that right there I can hide it or I can end the call straight from this picture and picture menu so we're going to go ahead and end call and there we go it's done straight from that the WebEx and the zoom application are also going to be available soon for the Apple TV that way you can take advantage of those same features on those applications if you do video conferencing calls another really fun feature in tvos 17 is Apple music seeing and again another feature I could not imagine I was going to use when I first heard about it but now I love it so this also integrates with continuity camera so you can see basically yourself on screen with visual effects while you're singing lyrics to a song what Does My Life come to but this is fun so you can see you have multiple different visual effects that you can choose between and it just makes the whole experience fun this is like a cool little party trick like everybody loves this when you have multiple people over that have never seen seen this before it's super cool and even if they have seen it before it's just a really cool thing to do when you have other people around at the house or even just with yourself and your significant other it's just a fun cool little addition to the Apple TV remember this is just a set top box $150 set top box you can get so much out of it it's crazy you can also watch up to four sports games at once now thanks to multiv view so this works for MLS season pass and Friday night baseball so no NFL just yet but you can watch up to four streams at once there's now thirdparty VPN support for the Apple TV so you can now download thirdparty vpns and use them with Netflix Disney Plus or any other streaming service to get access to content that's not available in your country we have new aerial screen savers in tvos 17 so we have Monument Valley and California's coastal redwoods you can also have a screen saver of your curated memories from your personal library or from your shared library or both now one of my favorite features in tvos 17 that's more of a real feature that enhances your overall experience with the Apple TV is called enhance dialogue and this works by basically having the dialogue separated from the background noise so the Apple TV and the homod second generation so this only works if your Apple TV is paired with the homod second generation they both use on device machine learning to separate the dialogue from the background noise and kind of Bring It Forward to the center channel and this feature just makes it much easier to hear people talking during an action scene with like a lot of loud sound effects and background noise and everything going on at the same time you can still hear the dialogue and people talking during that scene we also have support for Dolby Vision 8.1 so this is going to offer Apple TV 4K users a more cinematic visual experience with Dynamic metadata over a broader range of movies and TV shows that's how Apple describes it and then we also have enhancements to Apple Fitness Plus so if you go into the fitness application you will see that we have custom plans which is a new way for Fitness Plus subscribers to receive custom workouts or meditation schedules based on the day the duration the workout time and more there's also a feature called Stacks which allows you to select multiple workouts or meditations that way you can have them going back to back seamlessly kind of like AQ in music there's also a feature called audio focus which gives the volume of the music music priority over the trainer's voice you can hear the music over the trainer's voice more so than normal so that is tvos 17 the biggest update to come to the
