**The Fascinating World of Owl Eyes: A Deep Dive into Their Unique Vision**

For animals in the wild, survival is a daily battle. Finding food while avoiding becoming someone else's meal is a constant challenge. Many creatures have evolved unique traits to help them navigate this harsh reality, and one of the most fascinating examples is the eye.

Animals have developed a wide variety of eyes over time, each suited to their specific environments and needs. While some, like goats, rely on horizontal rectangular pupils to help spot predators while grazing, others, such as the colossal squid, possess the largest eyes in the world, enabling them to spot large objects like sperm whales from afar. However, today we are focusing on a group of animals that truly stands out: owls.

Owls are some of the most fascinating creatures in the animal kingdom, known for their fierce hunting skills and unique physical features. They have powerful beaks and talons, feathers designed to reduce noise while flying, and even asymmetrical ears— one higher than the other — which help them pinpoint prey in the dark. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of owls is their eyes.

Dr. Evan Antin, a veterinarian who has worked with animals around the world, highlights the unique features of owl eyes. One of his favorite examples is the great horned owl skull, which showcases just how significant the eyes are to an owl's anatomy. The size of the eyeballs in this skull is remarkable; they take up as much or more space than the brain itself. This isn't just for show — larger eyes mean bigger pupils that can expand to let in more light, crucial for their nocturnal lifestyle.

Owl eyes aren’t just big; they’re also uniquely shaped. Unlike most animals, owls have what is referred to as "tubular eyes." This shape allows their eyes to take up less space and weigh less while still maintaining the distance between the lens and the retina necessary for sharp vision. However, this tubular design comes at a cost: it limits their peripheral vision, making them more reliant on moving their heads to see in different directions.

Owls are known for their ability to rotate their heads up to 270 degrees, which is often cited as a unique fact about these birds. While this figure might seem impressive, it’s important to note that the starting point of this movement isn’t accounted for in that number. What owls can do is turn their heads far enough to see behind them and even upside down, thanks in part to their flexible necks. Most owls have 14 neck vertebrae compared to humans' seven, giving them incredible flexibility. This flexibility is further aided by a unique joint called the atlanto-occipital articulation, which allows owls to pivot their heads like a robot.

Despite these remarkable adaptations, owls are not immune to the challenges faced by other animals in the wild. Dr. Antin shares the story of a screech owl he worked with, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts. Many owls come into wildlife rescues after being orphaned or injured, and organizations around the world work tirelessly to rehabilitate them and release them back into their natural habitats.

the biggest ever, they've evolved to see largeobjects far away, perfect for spotting spermwhales looking for lunch.But today we're going to be talking aboutowl eyes.Now there are a lot of things that make owlsfascinating animals and fierce hunters;powerful beaks and talons, feathers that actually helpthem reduce noise as they flap, and some speciesactually have asymmetrical ears.One is higher than the other.And that helps them locate prey better inthe dark.But today I really want to talk about theireyes, and not just because I have this skull,but it helps.This is my great horned owl skull, and it'sone of my favorites because I mean if youlook at his eyeballs.And you think about the mass, the actual volumethat is occupied by eyeballs, it's maybe asmuch or more than the brain or the rest ofthe skull, and they're big for a reason.The bigger the eyes, the more the pupils canexpand to let in light, which helps themsee in the dark.That's why you see a lot of nocturnal animalswith those big eyes like the tarsier.We're not really going to get into the detailsof the tarsier but come on, we needed toshow you what they look like.Bigger eyes also means more space between the lens,the front of the eye, and the retina at the backof the eye.This distance helps the owl's eyes focus ona bigger and more sharp image on their retina,resulting in their impressive vision.For example, the tawny owl can see about twoor three times better than us humans, butof course vision varies from owl to owl.The other amazing thing about owl eyes is theirshape.Usually when referencing eyes we talked abouteyeballs.But in this case, owls have eye tubes.Scientists believe that as birds evolved,their center of gravity moved to the centerof their body to help with the balance offlying.So their heads had to become lighter.This is the reason owls have tubular eyes,a tubular eye takes up less space than a roundor globular eye, and in turn weighs less, butit doesn't lose that distance between thelens and the retina.So the owl can have a lighter eye, and stillmaintain their amazing vision, but this tubularshape also meant they lost some of their peripheralvision.The opposite of those goat eyes I love so much.Owl eyes are also fixed socket eyes, held inplace by a bone called the sclerotic ring.This along with their limited peripheral visionmeans that if an owl wants to see left, right,up or down,they have to physically move their head.Luckily, they've evolved in a way to helpthem do that.Now you may have heard the fact that owls canturn their heads 270 degrees, which mightbe true, but this fun fact might be a littledeceptive.First off, if I told you I could rotate myhead 180 degrees, would you believe me.Well, let me show you.See, this 270 degree fact isn't telling youthe starting point, which makes it a littlemisleading.Now what owls can definitely do is see behindthem, and even further ifthey need and turn completely upside down.This is all due to a few things.First, most owls have 14 neck vertebrae.Humans have just seven.This gives them that amazing flexibility,but their flexibility is also thanks to thejoint between their neck and their head calledthe atlanto-occipital articulation joint.Now as humans have two of these joints thatare connected to our skull, giving us limitedrange, but owls only have one, giving themthe ability to pivot around, kind didn't get into like their ears,feathers, beaks, wings, talons, you can startto get a picture of why these birds are suchelite hunters, but that doesn't mean they'reimmune to the troubles affecting so many animalsout there.Look at my little patient today.This is a screech owl.Pretty cool, huh?From a conservation standpoint my experiencewhen working with owls has mostly been withwildlife rescues, and these are animals thatwere maybe orphaned or they were injured.And so they need some medical help to potentially andhopefully get them back into the wild.Luckily, around the world are amazing organizationsstudying owls rescuing owls and helping preservenot only new generations, but the environmentswhere they live.Because look owls not only have an importantplace in the ecosystem.They can also greatly benefit us.Farmers harnessthe power of owls' amazing eyes to help naturallycontrol rodent populations that could harmcrops.And on top of all that, they're amazing tosee in the wild.So
