Hello Everyone: Welcome to HGTV Handmade with Me!
Welcome back to my channel, everyone! I'm so glad you're here today. For today's video, we're going to be making something really fun and adorable - a cute doughnut mug! I totally forgot what we were going to make at first, but I think it turned out great. Let's get started!
So, with a blank canvas or a blank white mug, you can use any color you like. I'm using this blank mug today, so let's see how it turns out. First, I need to spray some rubbing alcohol on here before I paint. This will help the paint adhere better to the surface.
Next, I need to find a circular object in my home that I can use as a tracing guide. In my case, I'll be using this coaster. Place your circle onto wherever you would like your picture to go on the mug. With a permanent marker, trace around that circular shape. Don't worry if you make any mistakes - just immediately take out your rubbing alcohol and paper towel and wipe off wherever you want to fix.
Now it's time to draw in a second circle inside the bigger circle. You now have a doughnut shape! Make the frosting by drawing a wiggly line close to the outer circle. If you have any mistakes, I suggest cleaning them up now. What I did was keep it on because I thought the paint would cover it, but it kind of showed toward the end. So, I suggest fixing all mistakes before painting.
Before selecting your paint, make sure to read the back label at the craft store. I'm using craft paint today, which can go on multi-surfaces including ceramics and glass. For my first layer, I'll be choosing a nice light brown for the doughnut part. My next choice of color is going to be pink, since I want this to have pink frosting.
I'm adding one thin layer of paint first and letting it dry for at least 1 hour before painting on a second layer. Lastly, I'm adding yellow and blue sprinkles, which will show on top of the pink depending on the brand of paint you're using. All instructions are different, so I highly suggest reading the labels behind your paint bottles.
To get rid of any bubbles or air pockets in the paint, baking my mug for about 30 minutes is also a good idea. It's also best to let the paint set dry for 21 days before it becomes permanent. You can put this in the dishwasher if you like, or wash it with just soap and water.
That's it for today! I hope you enjoyed this video and if you like this mug, don't forget to give this video a thumbs up! Let me know what your favorite frosting is - whether it's on a cupcake or on a donut - comment below.
