How To Expand File System Ubuntu Mate Raspberry Pi 2 Or 3 Easy

The Easy Way to Expand Your File System on Raspberry Pi with Ubuntu MATE 16.04

Hey what's going on guys, it's your buddy ETA Prime back here again today. I'm here with the Raspberry Pi 3 running on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and I want to show you a very easy and simple way to expand your file system. In the past, I've made a few tutorials on how to expand the file system while running on Ubutu MATE on the Raspberry Pi 2 or the Raspberry Pi 3, and that entailed going into the terminal and typing in a few lines of code to get the file system to expand. Well, those days are over.

Ubuntu MATE 16.04 added a feature that makes it super simple to do this now. It's not entirely clear if this was added in 16.04 or a little earlier, but I'm glad they did. So, let's take a look at how easy it is to expand your file system on Ubutu MATE. Here we are at the welcome screen, and you can resize the file system by clicking on the Raspberry Pi information button. It's that easy.

You just click on Raspberry Pi information, and then you'll see a button that says "Resize Filesystem". Clicking this will expand your file system, and when you're done, you can reboot your Raspberry Pi. Your file system should be extended or expanded by the time you come back online. If for any reason you have turned this welcome screen off, you can still re-enter it by clicking on System > Welcome, and then loading up the welcome screen again.

Let's take a look at my home folder right now. I'm just going to right-click on the properties of my home folder, and check how much free space I have. Right now, I only have 4 gigabytes free, but I'm using a 16 gigabyte SD card. This means that I don't have enough free space on my file system. But don't worry, we can fix this easily.

Let's go back to the Raspberry Pi information screen and click on "Resize Filesystem" again. We'll reboot our Raspberry Pi one time, and then when it comes back online, our file system should be extended or expanded by the time you come back online. Let me check my home folder properties again to see how much free space I have now.

Right-clicking on the properties of my home folder, I can see that before, I only had 4 gigabytes free. But now, I have 11.8 gigabytes of free space! My file system is expanded and I'm ready to use it to its full potential with Ubutu MATE. I'm super glad that they included this feature, as the older tutorials I made are now obsolete.

If you still want to do it the old way, where's there's no welcome screen or "Resize Filesystem" button, then you can still do it that way. But trust me, this is super easy and quick, and it's a lot easier than the old method. So when you open your welcome screen on your Raspberry Pi, go to Raspberry Pi information, and click on "Resize Filesystem", and don't forget to hit like and subscribe because we have a lot more coming! Thanks for watching guys, and thanks for helping me out by subscribing.
