timing gear here now Mercedes says this car do nought to 60 in 4.9 seconds but we shall see won't we so here we go struggling to be off the line that gear change is brutal here we go here we go we've got it we've got a number people what is that number though not sixty four point seven seconds that's good that's really good what was the only D just like the Mercedes this s3 has a two liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine there has ten horsepower less 300 horsepower it does have the same 400 Newton meters of torque or 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox all-wheel drive and a launch control system which will work when you're in dynamic mode there you also have to press the stability control to put it into sports mode and ensure the gearbox is also in sports mode and then left on the brake throw the throg and it will work out it says is called the nought-60 in 4.7 seconds which is why I actually got with the Mercedes so what will this actually do I'm gonna find out using my specialist timing gear yet again and we'll find out right now of that bay to the table and really well that was a good launch did naught to 60 in 4.3 seconds he's mad utterly utterly mad beat then I say this do you know what's just as important as performance with these cars it is their looks they've got a look posh and the a3 saloon does look lovely it's been around for a while now this design it still looks good and obviously being the S version you get some sporty add-on such as moon look at that a little bootlicks spoiler there's also the s3 badging as well a rear diffuser and four exhaust pipes now me personally I prefer the s3 s4 pipes than the larger two exhaust pipes you get on the rs3 cameraman Jack he doesn't agree with me but what do you reckon let us know in the comments below you have the argument for us now one of the reasons I prefer the four is because of this look I could not only use sticks to show that they are real yeah unlike some other out is like the s6 with its fake pipes you are fake news I can play them not the capital bells as this is serious motoring journalism anyway so yes through your circuits upgraded wheels it's got low suspension you got side skirts there's chrome you bits about the place and satin effect on the door mirrors around the front you have a sporty front bumper low diffuser on it as well once again this chrome round the grill though if you go for the black pack that is black the wheels are black you can also get black on the rumors as well nice-looking car this very nice some of you may be wondering why the heck I haven't got the a35 saloon well the reason is the CLA is only a little bit more expensive and let's be honest is the one you have because it just looks way sexier in fact I really like the look of it sorry anyway I'm gonna tell you about the upgrades over the normal CLA so you have a rear diffuser which looks very sporty large exhaust pipes you have the AMG badging there and UCLA 35 budging down there then there's this little bootlicks spoiler which is a bit bigger if you have a car with the aero package which this one has look it's a bit longer still quite discreet though no huge wing that you get on the a 35 hatchback moving down the sides you get some upgraded alloy wheels these look lovely guys also lower to the ground so it looks meaner and you have these side skirts as well this car has the black pack so all things that will be Chrome or blacked out - yet again make it look meaner moving to the front you have a redesigned bumper with the arrow pack there's some extra bits of like Aero trim there not that noticeable what is more noticeable is the 35 grille which are there's two slots like different than the 45 grille the hardcore proper AMG version but it still looks good and it's got quite a deep front diffuser as well smart looking car very very cool I like in this blue denim paint people in the office say they don't but I do I think it looks nice so there they can sod off car tonight in fact this car for me looks better than the s3 saloon easily easily one thing I do always does well is interior quality and it's no different here yes three nice soft touch materials about the plays and everything feels solid the s3 version get some upgrades such as a sporty steering wheel with S badging your to get a sporty knob the sport seats there these are the upgraded sports seats with a fixed headrests and mmm lovely these things are super comfortable and they look good I do really like the red surround for the air vents but I think that's part of an option pack along with some extra red stitching about the place typical Germans always trying to fleece you now back in the day the digital does which are also optional looked really good but everyone's copied Audi and quite a lot of people have bettered them as well I'll tell you what looks really old though a pop up screen its pop it up but back in the day the system's actually alright to use to be fair yeah qapla enjoy daughter and stuff like that but to do an update it's nice to have a swivel wheel controller modern Audi's don't have that anymore come and miss it give you you million I'll tell you what the inside of this CLA just makes that of the s3 see absolutely old as the hills I love it so modern love the step - lots of squidgy materials though there are a few plastics which are really really cheap G de la deep down a ax and the stalk for the gear sector now live the fact that it's up there that is to use when you're maneuvering forwards backwards forwards backwards and you're reversing and stuff but it just feels horrible they should coat it in leather like the sports steering well what you get is standard with a 35 version mmm it says AMG on it as well you also get these sports seats with the headrests leans forward a bit it makes it a good bit more hearts yeah I definitely prefer the Audi's seats it's only another thing I like that makes it howdy just seem really old-fashioned the two digital screens huge 10 inch screens really colorful really bright the infotainment system is super easy to use and navigate and dare I say it it is the best system in the business right now not the BMW idrive come live I said that but it's the way it's got voice commands as well and then alright although sometimes they can be a bit annoying console anyway the CLA 35 has some specific sporty dolls with nice bright year like graphics and mg information like boost for your turbocharger oh and the Premium Plus package which this car has has 64 different ambient lighting colours for the interior so you can just spend too long trying to figure out which is the combination you prefer that actually drives me crazy at night I always end up at my destination late because I've been too busy faffing around sporty cars should sound sporty so let's compare these two cars exhaust notes starting with the Mercedes right that's enough of that let's see what the Audi sounds like come on then it's enough of that this one has one of those rev limiter say when let you read past 3000 rpm when you're stationary which is boring this sounds better but to make it fair let's see what they sound like when they're driving so let's cut to that now personally I prefer the sound of the Mercedes but what do you think you can decide click up there on the if I said it really straight my head does just touch the roofline the actual hatchback is slightly better this saloon has a more sloping roofline it's livable though people over six-foot may struggle so I that's for the boot well being a saloon it's not gonna be quite as practical as a hatchback because you've got a narrow opening but it's not too bad the capacity is 380 litres whereas on the normal a3 saloon it's 420 the reason being that the s3 is obviously four-wheel drive and part the mechanicals for the Ford Drive system go underneath the boot and it eats into the space and Audi's Engineers haven't figured out how to kind of deal with that without affecting practicality blessed them and another thing they haven't figured out is how to release the seat backs to fold them down from the boot you have to command here that's such such hard work now unlike the Audi the CNAs boot is the same size regardless of which model you go for looks like sadie's engineers a little bit better at engineering practicality than out is it sort of gonna be the last out there believe me anyway the boot crusty is 460 litres that is massive so it's really practical and for a saloon you've got a huge opening and of course you can fold down the rear seats quite doing that kind of thing as well yeah that beats the ID now a backseat side well Headroom is best described as children would be alright and knee room is alright it's a bit dark and dingy back here because the windows are quite small it's not quite as good the people in the back is the ID which isn't great in itself hello now comes the good bit because I'm gonna check out these cars fun factor first with the Mercedes it has extra bracing over the normal a class to make it stiffer also does this thing when it breaks the inside wheels to give you a little bit more turn in the steering rack as well its sporty a little bit there there the brakes are bigger as well to help you scrub off speed it does all right you know and that four-wheel drive grip that's good really just rocking out of corners so I'm gonna give it the old journalists smile test to show you how much fun this car is to drive when the opportunity presents itself and it is a that's good that is it's awful but you might get with something like a BMW m2 but then this is a lower powered car and it's full wheel drive it's more sensible how would they already do okay then s3 what you got just like the Mercedes you got loads of different suspension upgraded steering bigger brakes compared to the normal a3 the four-wheel drives helping out in these slippery conditions as well I'm not sensing quite as much through either well my bottom hole this steering wheel as in the Mercedes and it doesn't feel quite as hard edge towards under steering there or yeah it's still pretty capable and will go round very very quickly oh yeah let's wrap it so then what's the old motoring journalists grin saying to it the IDS three gets a I mean it's alright it's just not quite as much fun as the Mercedes having fun in a car is all well and good but the reality is that modern motoring is pretty boring so it's important the car is a good commuter as well and to find out how relaxing it is to travel in I'm gonna see just how loud it is when you're cruising on the motorway and that is why I'm letting Jack Drive for once don't normally but he's driving so Jack what we need to do is drive at sym 2 miles an hour I'll start the sound meter running we'll do a lap and see how loud or quiet it is after a lap but we have to be quietly doing it to get up to 70 70 let's let's start it now right in Jack that's a lap done and we've registered an average of 80 decibels which according to this app is as loud as a busy street or alarm clock which is quite loud isn't it these guitars mainly anyway what we've been cruising what economy this car been doing 30 to 30 miles per gallon those into bad red is it anyway that's enough of this let's do the same thing in the Mercedes and you're gonna drive again jack alright and jacket same different car you at 70 Yeah right Staal is running okay that's enough for that then so see them guess what same it's exactly it's exactly the same you should be a motoring journalist your ears attuned to this like same 80 decibels bang on it's almost as though Mercedes benchmark this car against the arrow D isn't it we know further what about the economy though what's that saying 31 miles per gallon so that's pretty much the same as well that's not bad economy really to put into perspective it's in this coke bowl if that was filled with petrol in this car the IOD that much will basically get you three and a half miles now I want to see how comfortable these cars are over bumps so we're going to see how easy it is for me to drink from this bottle of coke as we go over this rough surface here that's fine but that's gonna get extreme that was quite hard oh my gosh so this guy's actually reasonably comfy over certain bumps and even hard ones it's not terrible for a car with sports suspension and I just managed to drink without spilling it died me which is good this car is on adaptive suspension in comfort mode and you don't get that as standard in this sale 8:35 let's do the same thing with the Audi it's in comfort mode and it's a ducted suspension is standard across the range for the s3 it's not bad on this bit smoothly comfy enough there's a really bad bit right that's conclusive this is not quite as conveys oh let's do something else you might have noticed that no point in this video have I mentioned these cars prices well let's talk about that ugly topic right now in the CLA it starts from 40,000 pounds the s3 from 39 thousand pounds however on average you can save for an off-brand often Mercedes like this through car wire and two and a half on the s3 so it's all a bit confusing but that's the average savings recover what really matters is the saving you can get and because these cars are quite closely much I think that is going to make up your mind that's going to be the ultimate decision so to decide which car wins what I've done is taken into account what I think of both of these to drive when the opportunity presents itself and it is a that's good that is it's awful but you might get with something like a BMW m2 but then this is a lower powered car and it's full wheel drive it's more sensible how would they already do okay then s3 what you got just like the Mercedes you got loads of different suspension upgraded steering bigger brakes compared to the normal a3 the four-wheel drives helping out in these slippery conditions as well I'm not sensing quite as much through either well my bottom hole this steering wheel as in the Mercedes and it doesn't feel quite as don't normally but he's driving so Jack what we need to do is drive at sym 2 miles an hour I'll start the sound meter running we'll do a lap and see how loud or quiet it is after a lap but we have to be quietly doing it to get up to 70 70 let's let's start it now right in Jack that's a lap done and we've registered an average of 80 decibels which according to this app is as loud as a busy street or alarm clock which is quite loud isn't it these guitars mainly anyway what we've been cruising what economy this car been doing 30 to 30 miles per gallon those into bad red is it anyway that's bumps so we're going to see how easy it is for me to drink from this bottle of coke as we go over this rough surface here that's fine but that's gonna get extreme that was quite hard oh my gosh so this guy's actually reasonably comfy over certain bumps and even hard ones it's not terrible for a car with sports suspension and I just managed to drink without spilling it died me which is good this car is on adaptive suspension in comfort mode and you don't get that as standard in this sale 8:35 let's do the same thing with the Audi it's in comfort mode and it's a ducted suspension is standard across the range for the s3 it's not bad on this bit smoothly comfy enough there's a really bad bit right that's conclusive this is not quite as conveys oh let's do something else you might have noticed that no point in this video have I mentioned these cars prices well let's talk about that ugly topic right now in the CLA it starts from 40,000 pounds the s3 from 39 thousand pounds however on average you can save for an off-brand often Mercedes like this through car wire and two and a half on the s3 so it's all a bit confusing but that's the average savings recover what really matters is the saving you can get and because these cars are quite closely much I think that is going to make up your mind that's going to be the ultimate decision so to decide which car wins what I've done is
