The Woman in the Window: A Desultory Review
As I began reading "The Woman in the Window" by A.J. Finn, I must admit that I was intrigued by the premise. The story follows Anna Fox, a recluse who spends her days spying on her neighbors through her telescope lens camera. However, as I delved deeper into the novel, I found myself growing increasingly disenchanted with the protagonist's character.
Anna is a likable enough person, but her constant narration of her thoughts and feelings quickly becomes grating. Her inner monologue is peppered with self-pity and a sense of entitlement, making it difficult for me to muster up any sympathy for her plight. Furthermore, her obsession with spying on her neighbors comes across as a bit pathetic, and I couldn't help but wonder if this was the best way to spend one's days. As I continued reading, I found myself checking in on Anna by looking through her telescope lens camera and now she is actually getting to know one of those neighbors that she has been spying on.
One of the neighbors, a beautiful woman named Jane, has just moved into the gray stone house across the street from Anna's own home. The house has several apartments or homes that Anna can see from her window, including one where Jane lives with her husband and 15-year-old son. Anna had previously made contact with the 15-year-old, and while their conversations were friendly, they didn't reveal much about his life. Now, Anna is spending time with Jane, but I'm not convinced that there's any real tension between them.
As I read on, I discovered that Jane has recently moved in with her husband and son, but the couple seems to be experiencing some marital difficulties. The details of their relationship are sparse at this point, but I suspect that there may be more to the story than meets the eye. My lack of interest in Anna's character is starting to manifest as a general disdain for the book itself. The premise feels a bit basic compared to other thrillers on the market, and I'm beginning to wonder if "The Woman in the Window" was truly groundbreaking when it was published.
At this point, I'm only 50 pages into the book, and my enthusiasm has waned significantly. Anna's character is still grating on me, and her narration feels like a chore. While I appreciate the idea of an unreliable narrator, I don't feel like Anna is doing enough to make me question what's real and what's not. The pacing is slow, and the tension between Jane and her husband is palpable, but it's not enough to redeem the book in my eyes.
My reading experience has been dominated by a sense of disappointment, and I'm starting to wonder if "The Woman in the Window" will surprise me with its ending. Will Anna finally reveal the truth about what happened to Jane? Or will she remain an unreliable narrator, leaving readers like me wondering what's real and what's not? Only time will tell.
As I continue reading, I'll be keeping a close eye on the plot and characters, but my initial impressions of the book are decidedly negative. Will my opinion change as I progress through the story, or have I simply made a mistake in choosing this book to read? Only future reviews and updates can answer that question.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello welcome back to my channel in today's video I am going to be taking you on a bit of an adventure this is the third time I am doing this sort of video series in which we go on a little bit of an adventure together I'm going to read two books in this video to the 50 Mark and then after I read those books Vlog them kind of tell you my experiences you're gonna decide what book you think I'm going to like more and what book you want to hear more about and you will be led to two other videos where I will be talking about the last 50 of those respective books if you click the Right video you'll be led to more videos and more videos and more videos and more videos I've actually read 12 books for this video or yes a series of videos and if you guess correctly you'll only have to hear about six of those books and if you guess incorrectly you'll have to go back and watch the video that you didn't select it might sound a little bit confusing but I think you'll get the hang of it once we get to the end of this video but for this particular video I'm going to be reading up to the 50 Mark the woman in the window by AJ Finn and final Girls by Riley Sager and at the end of this video you're going to decide what you want to hear more about what you think I'm going to enjoy more and we're going to go off on an adventure together and Choose Your Own Adventure together if you will now all the books that I've selected for this video series are going to be a dark Moody gritty books not all of them fall into the mystery thriller category but all of them have some sort of Haunting element to them they run the gamut from True mystery thrillers to why a to middle grade and everything in between and you're going to be along for the ride with me hopefully this entire Journey it's gonna get a little spooky it's gonna get a little scary but I am hoping to find some new favorites all of the books that I'm going to be reading are books that I physically own that are on my physical TBR so by doing this video I will have knocked out 12 books on my physical TBR which I'm pretty excited about so let's go ahead and get into the Vlog portion of this video and you can see which book you think I'm going to like more and we can head off on this adventure together all right I have you on my planner tripod honestly pretty decent angle except for like the empty bookshelves behind me I've started final girls I decided to start with this one because it's due at the library the soonest and also I was intrigued you know uh first book I believe that Riley Sager ever wrote I've had very mixed look with his stuff in the past and I was like you know what uh let's just do it final girls is about our main character Quincy and at the start of the story we find out that she is a a final girl I think a lot of people are familiar with the phrase it's basically a word or a phrase to describe the Lone Survivor of like a mass casualty event in um let's say like horror movies usually but the media in this book has used that term to describe three women who were survivors of mass casualty events that actually happened so these three women Quincy Samantha and Lisa are you know lone survivors they have this like Bond because they have been through similar things now they don't all have relationships with each other in fact I don't think Samantha has met any of the other women before the start of the story but she comes in as a character in this book The Story opens with Quincy being informed by a cop that helped her kind of like escape from the situation she was in many years ago that Lisa unfortunately has an alive herself and Lisa was someone who really identified with the term vinyl girl and really wanted to help other women who had been through tough circumstances so for her to do this seems very out of character and Quincy feels a lot of guilt for this because she did know Lisa she talked to her a couple of times but she didn't keep in touch because she didn't really identify I guess as a final girl she just like wanted to move on with her life and not think about it but now that she knows that Lisa unfortunately unlived herself she is she's rethinking a lot of things and just kind of like you know in her head about kind of what happened to her and her trauma is kind of being brought up again I do also find out at the beginning of the story that she is not someone who has actually remembered the trauma that she went through she remembers being saved by the cop but she doesn't remember any of the events that happened in the cabin that all of her uh friends College friends were murdered and that was kind of the situation for her her I guess like her maybe College boyfriend and three or four of her friends all went to a cabin uh in college and all of her friends were unfortunately murdered except for herself you know she's feeling guilt she's feeling a little bit of that trauma kind of surfacing um again we're kind of getting some context on the people in her life she lives with her boyfriend who is a public defender I believe which makes things a little bit interesting and that her mom is someone who is not very supportive basically medicated her daughter from a young age and now our heroine I think has a bit of a Xanax problem but take a turn things get a little bit interesting when Samantha comes back into our heroine's life and I say comes back into her life she's never actually met Samantha Quincy has never met Samantha before and so she's meeting this person for the first time and kind of wondering why she's there I guess Samantha after the death of Lisa was like okay I need to like meet this woman and like kind of see if she's okay too because she's like I don't want this to happen again but it's it's just weird circumstances right like we're a little bit curious we're a little bit confused as to who Samantha is she ended up getting like put in jail for a little bit and we had to have Quincy's public defender boyfriend like get her out of jail uh and then things get even more interesting because we know that Lisa emailed Quincy the night that she died and said hey I need to talk to you urgently please you know contact me here like please call me obviously Quincy didn't see the email before at least analyzed herself so there's a lot at play I will say the listening experience has been pretty decent I am listening to this book while I put stickers in my sticker book that sounds honestly so juvenile but my planner stickers I have like a bunch of sheets of them and I'm putting them in my little sticker books keep things compact it has been a pleasant listening experience I think the narration is pretty well done it's not necessarily the most fast moving story I feel like we're getting a lot of backstory rather than kind of like a modern day like let's solve the Cold Case kind of situation like there are in some Thrillers but I'm not mad at it and I'm curious to see what happens I think it's pretty obvious that Lisa didn't on a live herself and if she did there was probably a very good reason for it that is not a reason that we know of right now so I don't know I'm curious to see what's up I'm also my hackles are a little bit raised when it comes to uh swimming up though like is she who she says she is because whenever she was arrested we find out that uh she's changed her legal name which is not uncommon for victims of crimes like this but is she really who she says she is but really no so especially since she went into hiding at a very young age could be someone else posing as Samantha so I think I might have messed up the names right there but Samantha Samantha's person who is back in in Quincy's life so I'm intrigued I'm interested I don't know that this is going to be like an incredible story but I think it is interesting having victims of crimes be at the center of the story I feel like oftentimes like we have characters who have never experienced trauma at the end of a thriller like oh wow they're up now but we don't get to see that so I think having people have been through stuff at the center of the story is interesting and I will say even though this is written by a man the characterization of Quincy is actually pretty decent so far so I'm not I'm not mad at it I'm gonna continue reading this I'll update you at 50 and then we can move on to one by one by Ruth Ware all right so I am 50 into final Girls by Rayleigh Sager almost out for me because I really did enjoy what I read of this book but again I feel like as I said in the last clip not a lot is really driving the story forward I mean it's not like we're standing still it's not like I'm totally bored but I was just expecting more to have happened at this point of the book so essentially we have more kind of conflict I guess you could say between Samantha and Quincy Samantha is just doing some kind of like weird shady and drawing Quincy into it Quincy has shoplifted she has gone to Central Park really late at night to I guess hang out and ends up accosting a man who is trying to assault a woman just gets herself into some like shady kind of situations because of this girl and now her cop friend is meeting Samantha for the first time and Samantha is acting like a completely different person which is kind of raising Cooper's the the cop his hackles a little bit and I also think it is making Quincy just a little bit suspicious of this person and like is she really who she says she is I don't know if that's really like come to her idea but that's definitely something she's thinking about and on top of that now the tabloids are running stories about Samantha and Quincy hanging out and being in New York and previously like no one was really bothering Quincy I guess no one really knew that she lived there even though she wasn't really like laying low necessarily so things are definitely heating up things are definitely getting interesting but I still am unsure of like what direction the story is gonna take I think if it were gonna be the most predictable thing ever it would be that we're going to find out more about the hidden or repressed memories of Quincy and we're gonna find out that she maybe has something to do with the murders of all of her friends or she knows more than she previously thought obviously because of repressed memories and I'm thinking that Samantha's not who she says she is I think that Samantha is the sister of one of the girls that was murdered in that cabin so many years ago and the reason I think that is because there have been multiple mentions by Quincy of wow she reminds me so much of this girl I can't remember the name of her girl I think it's a j name but I can't remember the name Juniper no it's the name of another character from a thriller I've read recently I'm thinking that's going to be the case and I'm thinking that's why uh her name is like not actually her real name if that makes sense and I'm thinking that maybe like the real Samantha's dead or something like that I don't know or she's gonna come out of the Woodworks later I'm very intrigued like I definitely want to know where the story goes and I'm excited to carry on with this in you know the following video but I don't know if this one is going to win out over the woman in the window by AJ Finn the woman in the window by AJ Finn wow um this is a book that I think gets a lot of hate because of the author I feel like I didn't go and read that entire article about AJ Finn as a person I could also be thinking of a different person but I'm pretty sure I'm not anyway a woman in the window is about an agoraphobic woman who watches people from her window oh my God are we shocked to be surprised she has recently been left by her husband and daughter I guess because of some events that happened on a family vacation I guess bad went down we don't know the details but we just know that her husband is gone and that she's still very much in contact with him and you know checks in on her daughter very often because she loves her daughter so it's clear to me that she is a character who has some emotional uh trauma in her past and you know she's dealing with some stuff so she's agoraphobic she stays at home and she's also a children's therapist but since this incident that happened she has moved away from home I believe she used to live in Connecticut now she's living in New York and she's no longer in contact with any of her clients like her children the children that she helped so she's kind of finding other ways I guess you could say to channel some of her observation skills some of her professional skills by helping people on an online Forum if their mental health and again by like checking in on the people around her by looking in her telescope lens camera and now she she is actually getting to know one of those neighbors that she has been spying on I believe this woman has just moved into a gray stone across the street from her there's like a few different apartments or like homes that our heroine can see from her window obviously and one of those homes a new beautiful woman has just moved in with her husband and her like 15 year old son our narrator has already had contact with the 15 year old and kind of gotten some insight into kind of what he's dealing with um which isn't anything like major or anything he doesn't have any trauma in his life necessarily but she's just had some friendly conversations offered him a couple of DVDs like on loan and now the protagonist of the story is hanging out with the mother I think we might find out that there is some tension between this woman and her husband who have recently moved in um but I don't know much more than that because again I'm only like 20 in but so far I'm intrigued I mean our narrator is a little pathetic and like kind of annoying to listen to but I am interested enough though I think this premise feels a little bit basic by comparison to some of the other Thrillers out there this one definitely made a splash when it was published it got made into a movie maybe this was like really the first of the domestic Thriller boom I'm not entire entirely sure but it definitely doesn't feel like anything fresh and new and I think I'm less interested in this one than I am final girls at this point once I get to 50 maybe things will change I don't know but I'm gonna keep reading and I will update you and then we can decide like what book I'm going to enjoy more okay so I'm 50 into the woman in the window and I don't like it I feel like this has not happened in the two other which is your own Adventures I've done I feel like I've never had a very obvious like I dislike one book and like another book but you know sometimes a good red herring is fun even in these sorts of videos I don't know maybe I'll end up liking this one more at the end but 50 in and our heroine I think her name's like Anna or something the woman with agoraphobia who kind of uh stalks her neighbors she has seen one of her neighbors get stabbed the woman that has like come over I think her name's Jane or something she's this redheaded woman across the street and um she gets stabbed and Anna calls the police and is like oh my God help like I you know my neighbor's been stabbed and no one seems like really concerned by this and then Flash Forward we realize that our heroine ends up getting arrested and taken to a psychiatric unit no one can seem to find Jane or um any evidence that Jane was actually stabbed like our heroine said and then we meet Jane later on again I guess and Jane is not the woman that Anna has met oh my God it's some other woman with like dark hair not red hair so we're wondering what happened to Jane is someone else posing as Jane like what's going on is our heroin just an unreliable narrator you know that she is on a lot of medication we know that she drinks heavily so like is she lying to us is she unaware of what's going on around her we don't know I also don't care though because her character is just so pathetic I'm sorry like she's not fun to listen to I have basically no sympathy for her I mean I guess like sad that your husband and kid are no longer like in your life um or like living with you but yikes she is so unfun to listen to I just like don't I don't care about her story at all I don't know I feel like I tend to enjoy stories with unreliable narrators but this one is just so like I just don't like her okay I don't like her so I don't know I don't know if this bodes well and like the ending is gonna blow my mind because I feel like the reviews for this book are so much better than the reviews for um final girls but I'm enjoying final girls more at this point so I don't know I feel like you have to make a very tough decision now do you think I'm going to really like and enjoy final girls do you think this is going to be the book I enjoy more or do you think I'm going to have change of heart and really like the woman in the window your choice is gonna matter because whatever video you click on next will hopefully be the correct choice and will lead you to another chain of videos um if not obviously you can like go back and play again but what is it gonna be each dayhello welcome back to my channel in today's concerned by this and then Flash Forward we realize that our heroine ends up getting arrested and taken to a psychiatric unit no one can seem to find Jane or um any evidence that Jane was actually stabbed like our heroine said and then we meet Jane later on again I guess and Jane is not the woman that Anna has met oh my God it's some other woman with like dark hair not red hair so we're wondering what happened to Jane is someone else posing as Jane like what's going on is our heroin just an unreliable narrator you know that she is on a lot of medication we know that she drinks heavily so like is she lying to us is she unaware of what's going on around her we don't know I also don't care though because her character is just so pathetic I'm sorry like she's not fun to listen to I have basically no sympathy for her I mean I guess like sad that your husband and kid are no longer like in your life um or like living with you but yikes she is so unfun to listen to I just like don't I don't care about her story at all I don't know I feel like I tend to enjoy stories with unreliable narrators but this one is just so like I just don't like her okay I don't like her so I don't know I don't know if this bodes well and like the ending is gonna blow my mind because I feel like the reviews for this book are so much better than the reviews for um final girls but I'm enjoying final girls more at this point so I don't know I feel like you have to make a very tough decision now do you think I'm going to really like and enjoy final girls do you think this is going to be the book I enjoy more or do you think I'm going to have change of heart and really like the woman in the window your choice is gonna matter because whatever video you click on next will hopefully be the correct choice and will lead you to another chain of videos um if not obviously you can like go back and play again but what is it gonna be each day\n"
