Sony X93L TV Review _ Is This Actually a New TV

**Sony X93L Review: A Premium TV with Excellent Performance**

The Sony X93L is an excellent TV that offers premium performance and features that will satisfy even the most discerning viewers. With a 4K display and mini LED backlight, this TV provides stunning visuals with deep blacks, vibrant colors, and accurate color reproduction. The X93L's motion processing capabilities are also noteworthy, making it well-suited for fast-paced content like sports and action movies.

One of the standout features of the X93L is its backlight performance. According to Sony, 9.6 out of 10 customers will be thrilled with this TV's backlight performance, indicating a high level of brightness and minimal blooming. However, for enthusiasts who want more or better video quality, the X93L may not be sufficient. The folks who prefer OLED TVs or are willing to spend more on advanced features like those found in the x95l model will need to look elsewhere.

**Backlight Performance and Blooming**

When watching the TV dead on, you don't see a ton of blooming, but if you're in a pitch-black room and watching very dark content with specific bright highlights, you may notice some blooming. The TV uses fewer zones or additional zones to get that brightness rather than relying on more advanced backlight control methods. This means that while the X93L performs well in terms of brightness, it may not be as effective at controlling blooming.

To illustrate this point, I've got some b-roll footage here of us doing some color slides. As you can see, the brighter the color window gets, the more blooming creeps up into the top and bottom of the set. This shows that the TV is using a combination of zones to achieve its brightness, rather than relying on more advanced techniques.

**Other Features and Performance**

Despite the potential drawbacks in terms of backlight performance, the X93L still offers excellent tone mapping, which puts the brightness where it counts and keeps shadow detail looking good. The TV also excels at upscaling low-resolution content, making it an excellent choice for streaming live TV or playing games on a console.

In terms of gaming features, the X93L has a new Gaming Dashboard that allows you to toggle between VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and 60Hz or 120Hz depending on the game. There's also a Black Frame Insertion feature available when VRR is off, which can help reduce motion blur. Additionally, there's a Crosshair option that lets you customize the style and color of your gameplay experience.

**Eco Dashboard and Gaming Features**

One new feature in the X93L is an Eco dashboard that makes it easy to manage ecosystem settings and Eco setting prompts in the setup phase. This allows you to quickly disable eco mode for the best performance. There's also a Black Level Adjustment feature, which lets you fine-tune the contrast of your TV.

Another upcoming feature is the ability to change the screen size, so if you want to downsize the image and sit closer to the display, you can do that. However, this will alter the resolution of the image.

**Comparison to Other TVs**

The question remains: how does the X93L compare to other TVs like the Samsung QN90C and TCL QM8? If you're looking for a TV with similar performance at a lower price point, the X93L may be an excellent choice. However, if you want even brighter highlights with less blooming, you may need to look elsewhere.

In terms of price, the X93L is certainly more expensive than some of its competitors. But for enthusiasts who are willing to pay a premium for a TV that delivers exceptional performance and features, the X93L may be worth the investment.

**Do TV Brands owe You Notable Improvements Year After Year?**

As we approach Peak TV performance, it's worth asking whether TV brands owe you notable improvements year after year. In other words, should manufacturers continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in terms of picture quality and features?

This is a question that I'll be exploring in more depth in my upcoming video about whether we're approaching Peak TV performance and what we can expect from TV makers in the coming years.

In the meantime, if you have any thoughts on this topic, please share them with me in the comments below. Do you feel that TV brands owe you notable improvements year after year? Why or why not?

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis TV is a bit of a beast which is why I'm going with the furniture dolly because if I were to drag this across the floor one I'd probably give myself a hernia and two I just cleaned the carpets in here I don't want to get them dirty what's up Caleb Dennison here uh so here's the thing this is going to be a weird review because I feel like I already did it last year when this TV was called the x95k monster welcome back everyone I'm Caleb Dennison and today we're going to unbox that up and fully review the Sony x93 LTV so a couple things first off if you saw this video come in your feed you saw my face and the word Sony and you thought maybe this is the a95l it's not I'm sorry uh that TV has not come out yet so it'll be coming soon just keep your pants on please keep your pants on here's the deal the x93l looks a lot like last year's x95k and therein lies a lot of confusion because this is a brand new model number so you would expect it would be a brand new TV there are some new things about it but in terms of performance we are pretty much expecting x95k levels of performance as with all things TV related however it's not exactly that simple so we're going to give this TV the full review treatment we're going to take a look at what the pricing looks like this year what is new what isn't new more importantly is this a TV that you might want to buy that's what we got to get to at the end so first part of that is going to be unboxing this beast and getting it up on the stand and for that I'm going to need my trusty box cutter leg plastic pieces I have so many of these laying around right now remote and manual and another leg foot ouch big piece here and another piece of plastic always gentle so just a reminder uh Sony gives you two options uh in terms of leg placement you can either go in towards the center so narrower footprint if your media stand's not that big or you can go towards the edges which I always prefer and then at the edge you can either have them raised up high around here so you can accommodate a sound bar or the stealthier look which is going to place them up a little bit higher that's the way I'm going to go you although that may change I think we're going to start seeing more TVs bundled with uh sound bars in the future specifically from Sony so that'll be interesting this may be the first time I've ever seen champagne colored legs kind of a different look am I doing this wrong no you're gonna have some plastic film to remove you know I don't mind the plastic film removal so much if it's easy to do okay so while this is in update mode which is going to take a little while let me just say that the Google TV setup process was more or less what I expected with one major exception and that is that it didn't let me use the Google home app in order to set up the TV I had to like plug in my email address and password manually which doesn't sound like it's that big of a hassle but it is for me anyway I'm not sure what's up with that I'll check with Sony the other thing that was a positive in terms of setup was well just take a look it actually put the Eco setting right front and center as soon as you start setting up to TV so you can have a low energy consumption medium energy consumption or you can turn the Eco Mode off entirely which is what I did because I want the TV to get as bright as it possibly can we'll see later that the Eco settings have now been put in a much easier to reach spot within the menu that's actually one of the notable things about Sony's 2023 TV line so I'll show that to you later but for now we're just going to let this thing update I'm going to do all of my testing and when I come back I will look different I'll be wearing different clothes and I'll have a full opinion for you on this TV foreign folks I'm back and I want to start my review with an admission of guilt guilt might be a strong term anyway I have to admit that I went into this review having pre-judged this TV to be fair though I feel like I had good reason and I wouldn't at all be surprised if you tell me down in the comments that you've done the same here's the thing though we should not sleep on the x93l as I hinted at the beginning of this video on paper the x93l looks exactly like last year's x95k which was Sony's Flagship mini LED TV let's set aside the confusion of the model number convention for just a moment and for now work off this idea that the x93l is just a re-badged TV from 2022 and that Sony has presented nothing new in terms of Hardware with this TV that's what you have rolling around in your head when you're considering this TV it's hard not to think that maybe you're being cheated or something I mean it's a new year you want a new Sony TV not last year Sony TV right honestly I kind of felt that way going into this review I actually got on a call with Sony and asked him Point Blank tell me how this is not an x95k with a new model number and to Sony's credit they didn't really mince words they pointed to three new software-based features none of which got me tremendously excited and they fairly pointed to the fact that the x95k was and is an outstanding TV which of course Sony would say that anyway I carried on unbox the TV as you saw and started watching it and as I did I recalled that yeah this is a gorgeous TV it holds up today in terms of performance and at that moment I thought you know let's do some price comparisons to other 2023 models and it was then that I realized that what the x93l here really has going for it is its lower price compared to what the x95k cost when it came out yeah the price the Sony TV's price is the Difference Maker I didn't see that one coming either we spent so much time talking about the Sony tax right but the x93l is significantly less expensive than the x95k was when it first came out for example the 65-inch x95k had a 2800 street price at March the 65-inch x93l here is 2100 street price at launch that's a 700 difference and the price difference As you move up in size only gets more significant so now let's look at the competition the 65-inch Samsung qn 90c also a mini LED backlit TV is 400 dollars more at twenty five hundred dollars the 65-inch LG qnet 99 which admittedly I haven't seen since CES but it left a great impression that's also 400 dollars more at twenty five hundred dollars now granted there may be a handful of features that the LG and Samsung offer that the Sony x93l does not I mean the Sony only has two HDMI 2.1 inputs whereas the Samsung and the LG have four for example but if we look at overall performance for the price the Sony x93l is looking like a pretty smart choice so what we have here is that the x93l is coming in well under 2023 OLED TVs of the same size and just under competing many LED sets from Samsung and LG now if we toss the TCL qm8 and Hisense u8k into the mix well of course both TCL and Hisense sets are seriously undercutting all of the competition but there are trade-offs with those sets that I'll be digging into in future videos so if you want a bright Punchy mini LED TV with Sony's outstanding motion color resolution and HDR tone mapping the x93 is looking like a pretty awesome deal but I'm getting ahead of myself here I'm going to assume that you know nothing about the x95k from last year and dig into the measurements I got when testing the x93l and a little Deep dive I like to call numbers for Knit nerds by the way if I made some knit nerds merch would you buy it like t-shirts hoodies coffee tellers you know if you're into it let me know down in the comments right now so here's the rundown I tested the x93l with a spectracal C6 profile to an x-rite i1 Pro 2 using Cowman software and at first I used the IMAX enhanced mode but later I used the cinema preset which offered slightly better accuracy out of the box keep that in mind didn't expect that anyway the pre-calibrated SDR settings were pretty impressive the two-point white balance had errors under a Delta e of three but two ticks off the blue gain and blue bias pretty much zeroed out the errors entirely the SDR Peak brightness came in around 350 nits which is a little high for standard but more in line with what most folks will need and want so I think that's a smart choice on Sony's part color accurate was quite accurate with cow man showing an average Delta e of 4.2 now remember 3 or lower is imperceivable just above three juries out on whether you could tell a difference anyway this is in the great to excellent camp for out-of-box performance HDR 10 content showed Peak brightness of 1800 nits from a 10 window and just shy of 1 000 nits full field white color accuracy here was excellent with an average Delta e of 1.92 so no perceivable errors other than two Oddball colors that were pretty out of whack the x93l produced 93 of the uhda P3 color gamut and just over 73 percent of the BT 2020 color space there we see a little bit of room for improvement that's common with LCD TVs if the colors could get a little bit brighter that additional color luminance would improve the overall coverage of the BT 2020 color space in other words exactly like the Sony x95k from last year I mean I compared the two reports and they looked spot on similar so from those measurement points the x93l does look a lot like the x95k but what matters most to me though is how this TV handles backlight control and again I don't really expect it to be any better or worse than last year's x95k and it isn't from my memory it is exactly the same the only way Sony could improve the backlight performance on this TV is to add a bunch more mini LED backlights and break them down into significantly more zones and they have done that with the x95l a more expensive TV that's Sony's new flagship and it's only available in an 85 inch model so if you want the ultimate in mini LED backlight performance from Sony it comes from the x95l so for the x93l's part Sony has opted not to add a bunch of cost but instead bring the price down on this TV and I suspect that Sony believes that like 9.6 out of 10 customers will be thrilled with this TV's backlight performance and that the folks who want more or better video enthusiasts like many of us will either spend the money for an OLED TV or go for the x95l upgrade frankly that seems like a pretty smart business decision it's going to get more Sony TVs into more homes for those of us who are enthusiasts and really want to see like the ultimate backlight control in a TV that's priced down around the x93ls area well it's really not there I mean Sony has some Secret Sauce that they're employing here so when you're watching the TV dead on you don't see a ton of blooming you just don't maybe if you're in a pitch black room and you're watching very dark content with some very specific bright highlights you're going to notice that the TV blooms up a little bit you can really see it if you're standing very well off axis I've got some b-roll footage here of us doing some color slides and as you can see the brighter the color window gets the more of the blooming creeps up into the top and the bottom of the set which is showing us that the TV is not using that many zones or it's using additional zones to get that brightness rather than really muscle things from right behind the image so for those of you who are not super picky or video files and don't critique every little thing about a TV what you will get from this TV is Stellar motion processing and low resolution content upscaling it does wonders for streaming live tv as well as cable and satellite it's got excellent tone mapping so it really puts the brightness where it counts and keeps the shadow detail looking good and awesome color accuracy this is absolutely a premium TV with all the markings of a Sony what's new for this year is an Eco dashboard that makes it easy to manage ecosystem settings and Eco setting prompt in the setup phase which lets you just disable it right off the bat for the best performance and a new gaming dashboard that lets you turn vrr on and off toggling between vrr and 60 hertz or 120 hertz depending on the game there's also a black frame insertion feature available when vrr is off if you want to reduce motion blur reminder that local dimming is active in vrr mode but you can't have vrr and BFI at the same time and that just isn't doable when you're backlight blinking anyway there's also a black level adjustment here so it's easier to see in the dark scenes and a Crosshair option that you can use if you don't like your games Crosshair for whatever reason you can change the style and the color as well and another feature rolling out in a future firmware update is the ability to change the screen size so if you want to size down the image and then sit closer to the display you can do that but it will of course alter the resolution of the image so really at this point the question that's left is how does the x93l compare to the Samsung qn90c and if the TCL qm8 and Hisense u8k offer even brighter highlights with less blooming as I suspect they may then what if anything must you give up by choosing those models over the x93l here and the answers to those questions they'll be coming when I actually compare this Sony TV to those other televisions now stick around to the end because I have a question I'm hoping you will answer for me in the comments I really need your feedback but before I compare this TV to its competition in terms of price or performance what I can say is that the x93l is an excellent TV with premium performance the likes of which you just won't get from other TVs of that there is no question the question is does the x93l offer you what you are looking for if four HDMI inputs are what you need then perhaps the x93l isn't the right choice for you but if you want a mini LED TV that is absolutely gorgeous to watch bright vivid and Rich and more accurately duplicates Creator's intent than just about any other mini LED TV on the market then the x93l is an excellent choice thanks as always for watching everyone now it's time for that question I mentioned earlier do you feel that TV brands owe you notable improvements year after year and if so why spell that out for me in the comments because I'm going to be doing a video soon about whether we are approaching Peak TV performance and what we should and should not expect from TV makers in the coming years I'll see you there and hey don't forget to like And subscribe if you'd like to see the rest of this year's TV reviews I'll see you on the next one qm8 and until then here's two other videos I think you might like thank youthis TV is a bit of a beast which is why I'm going with the furniture dolly because if I were to drag this across the floor one I'd probably give myself a hernia and two I just cleaned the carpets
