The Exciting Project: Creating a Mini Arcade Phone Charger
We are Evan and Katelyn, and today we're going to make a phone charger that looks like a mini arcade. Featuring LEDs, wireless charging, a working button, cat ears, and some sweet art, this project is sure to be an exciting one. So, before we even started this project, we had to make sure it's at least somewhat viable. I started with a prototype, which was printed in two pieces, but unfortunately, it didn't quite work out as planned. Version two of the prototype was also not ideal, and I ended up overcorrecting it, making it a little bit too loose.
To fix this issue, I redesigned the prototype so that it could be 3D printed in one piece, with no gluing needed. This third version of the prototype finally got the cat ears just right, and the fit is perfect. Most importantly, it has built-in hooks for the wireless charger that we obtained. But, we didn't just want a blank, gray 3D print; we wanted to add some personality to our project. That's when I mentioned our majestic space donut, also known as our black hole table. This idea was inspired by our unique and cool space-themed decor.
We thought it would be fun to create a donuts in space theme for this project. And, that's exactly what we did. We painted the 3D print with this theme in mind, adding a touch of whimsy and fun to our project. Now, let's talk about testing the wireless charger. We wanted to make sure it would work through the wall of the 3D print. I inserted the hooks into the phone charger, and... voila! It worked! The wireless charger is functional, and we're one step closer to completing our mini arcade phone charger.
Now that we know this project is possible, we can start thinking about ways to make it even more exciting. One of our biggest challenges is finding a way to let the light out of this box, as we don't have any holes in the current design. We thought it would be cool if there were little pin-pricked star points on the back of the 3D print, but before we go through and print another piece, we wanted to do a little test drill to simulate it. I began drilling random holes into the back of the 3D print, while Katelyn provided some encouragement.
After I finished drilling, I inserted some little LEDs into the design, which added an extra layer of excitement to our project. We could see them sort of in the dark, but not quite. So, I decided to turn up the brightness and create a night light-like situation. This made the LEDs much more visible and added to the overall aesthetic of the phone charger. Katelyn pointed out that we had just changed the orientation of some of the LEDs, making them look even better.
One of the additional cool features of the LEDs is the button itself, which will be embedded where the buttons go on the arcade. Some of these buttons will just be for looks, but one will turn the lights on and off, which will be super cool. We're using little random magnets that we have laying around to insert into some of the buttons, adding a fun touch to our project.
After testing out some of the features, I realized that we almost forgot to show off one of the coolest aspects of our design - the joystick on the back of the 3D print. It's going to be so good! Katelyn was excited about this feature and couldn't wait to see it come together. Now that we've shown off all the exciting features of our mini arcade phone charger, it's time for the real version to be 3D printed.
And there you have it - our mini arcade phone charger is complete! It's a unique and fun design that combines wireless charging, LEDs, and a working button, all with a touch of whimsy and personality. We hope you've enjoyed this project as much as we have, and we can't wait to see what other exciting projects we come up with in the future.

like a majestic space dout.We thought it would be fun todo a donuts in space theme. This is a moment of truth.I want to make sure it fits, and I want to makesure it charges.Katelyn I haven't testedto make sure that this isat all viable. This is like, ifthis doesn't work. Then we scrap this footageand do a new project?Fingers crossed.Oh!(laughs)I'll hold this, ifyou can film me.So what we're testing isif the wireless chargerworks through thewall of the 3D print.Yeah.Okay.So let me just, actually, let me just stuffthis in here first.See how in there, there'sthese little hooks?Mm-hmm.So hopefully, Ican slide this in.Here it is, are wegonna do this project?Hey, it did it!You missed it!It's working, it's working!I had a moment of doubt!Me too.Okay so now that we know thisproject is actually possible,I think we can start shiftingour focus to ways to make ita little bit more exciting. But we're not reallysure how we are going tolet the light out of this box, because right now, wedon't have good. That might be a good start.EVAN: I'm just gonna sticksome little LEDs in here.KATELYN: You cansee them, sort of.EVAN: Do I turn thebrightness up a little bit?KATELYN: You can see theones along the back wall.(laughs)EVAN: Alright, lets turnit into a night lighttype situation here.KATELYN: Some are moreprominent than others.Oh wow, we just changedthe orientation of them.KATELYN: Yeah we justtaped them in place.EVAN: That looks so much better!KATELYN: That's way better.Way more even!Oh yeah, and we almostforgot to show you,one of the additionalcool features of the LEDs,is the button itselfwill be embeddedwhere the buttonsgo on the arcade. Some of these buttonswill just be for looks, but one will turn thelights on and off, which will be super cool.Wow!And the rest of the buttonswe're just gonna uselittle random magnetswe have laying around, that we're justgonna insert into.Yeah, they're littletiny fridge magnets. We might need to drillthis out a little bigger.Let's see, let's see. There's anothergood thing to test!Wait.Oh that's it!Look at that.KATELYN: Oh my gosh,it's so cute!I want to install them allbut I'll probably waste them.Look at that. They're all gonna havethe buttons, right there!A little joystick right there. It's gonna be so good!Katelyn, I think it's time.Time for the real versionof this to be 3D printedAre you Simba-ing it?I was holding it forwardthen I realized Icouldn't see it.Then over here.It is a cat.(singing the openingto \"Circle of Life\")♪ Copy strike! ♪(upbeat techno music)EVAN: That's socute, oh my gosh!So usually when we3D print things,we print it at the worstquality, the highest speed, because we're always in a rush.Turns out that there'sa lot of higher quality,if you slow down and letthings print for 24 hours. We should know this after6 years of 3D printing.EVAN: Yeah, but like, lookat the difference it makes! So you can see the supportdetails through here, the layer lines, are like, really evident on thehigher quality one, oh wow.KATELYN: Oh baby.Look at the back of the ears.Low quality, veryvisible layers.High quality, oh my god. It's so good. But anyways, one of thereasons that we went aheadand opted for the higherquality print this time,is because we have a lotof sanding and priming, and sanding andpriming ahead of us,to prepare it for paint.Which brings us to,montage mode.(upbeat techno music)KATELYN: Uh-oh, is it stuck?EVAN: (gasps)(nervous laughter)I got carried away.Ready to see it?KATELYN: Yeah.(gasps with admiration)Where are the layers?EVANS: Yeah, no layers!KATELYN: What?EVAN: I know.KATELYN: Seriously, what? We've never gotten aprint this good before. Also check this out.For the curved surfaces,I just burnished it,with Jimmy's ice pick.Look at how smooththat corner is.It's like glassKATELYN: That's crazy. It's pretty good!KATELYN: Yeah!Okay, so now wecan spray paint it!Yeah, and for thevery first time,we're gonna be tryingthese fancy spray paints,we've heard so much about.Montana Gold. Not Sponsored, hashtag not sponsored.KATELYN: So you mightnotice we only have pinks,no blacks or navy'sfor the space because,in our experience, acrylic paint, which is what we're doingfor the other details, sometimes it's hardto get a really nicesaturated light pink.Let's see how this works.KATELYN: Okay go for it.That is great! And then also, wehave two colors, because we're gonna test outa little bit of a gradient.Okay dark coat.Oh yeah.EVAN: Yeah!(laughs)KATELYN: Oh no, I'm leaving.EVAN: Oh no I did itbetter this time, duh duh.KATELYN: What do you think?JOOB: Make him stop.EVAN: I want to see howmuch the color builds up,over multiple coats.KATELYN: Yeah. And now a word from our sponsor.Evan, what are wedoing on this plane? It's time to jumpinto our sponsor ad!Okay that was pretty bad!Hey guys, I'd like to tellyou about today's sponsor,PUBG Mobile. It's one of the mostplayed games in the world, with how manydownloads, Katelyn?(screams)Yeah, that's right!Almost 700 million! It's a free game where100 players drop down ontoa deserted island,in a winner-take-all showdown.I'm actually pretty addicted!I won the very firstgame I ever played and,I kinda got hooked.Wait, so only one of us can win?Yeah, but...And they're alwaysadding updatesto keep things interesting.Like major updates tothe classic Miramar Map,a race track, and the new Golden Mirado. And when you want totake a break from battle, there's even a new Cheer Park, where you can hang outwith others in real time, and even eat roast chicken.I've had a lot of funplaying while waiting forlayers to printand paint to dry,and if you wanna playPUBG Mobile yourself, there's a link inthe description, and you can play it for free.Oh no, my phone's dead.Better get back tomaking this charger. Now it's your turn.Complete the gloriousness!Oh, careful.I know you normallylike being on this side,You get the seat.I can sit also?Great, this is great.(gasps)Uh-oh.It's probably fine.Okay it's fine.(laughs)At least I caught ithere on candid camera! It's recording? Is your audio on now?Audio's on.I like how you recorded butyou didn't turn your audio on.EVAN: I got yours.Ready?Ready.Okay guys, now is themoment that I have, personally been waiting for,and that is,painting the outside!Ah!We got these cutelittle paint markers.KATELYN: We got someleft over flow acrylic, which will go on nice and thin, and it's time tofreehand our design. How I'm thinkingwe should start isby doing the outlineof the frosting drips, then color in the space bottom, and then we'll come backand do the little details.EVAN: Yeah.My cup.I'm sorry if I block it.I need to be in weirdpositions when I draw.EVAN: I got a great angle.(upbeat music)KATELYN: Yeah!EVAN: Oh that looks great.(laughs)KATELYN: We're gonnago for like a navy.Dark, dark, dark navy.EVAN: And then youcan just, like, slap some of that onand then spread it.Yeah that's a goodslapping brush. That brush slaps!KATELYN: It slaps!EVAN: Oh yeah.It does have a navy tint to it.KATELYN: You know, I thinkit might be a good timeto switch to time lapse.(lively instrumental music)Can you hear me?(shouts)Ah!Oh no, I'm not on.Again.So this needed to dryfor about 30 minutes,so logically we streamedfor three hours.Oh Katelyn, should weget the spear again?(laughs)It's very royal,I feel very royal. Now we're back, and I'm gonna do allthe fun little details!EVAN: Oh my gosh,it looks so cute!KATELYN: I know look at it!You can see the gradient!EVAN: You can see the gradient!Of our pinks.EVAN: Everything'slooking beautiful! It's a really nice sharp line.It looks so dang good.It just fills me with joy!I know, I know, it'ssuch a cute little thing. You did so good!Thank you, thank you.I still have to dothe harder part.I just painted a solid color.Bringing our vision tolife though Katelyn, you're doing good work.KATELYN: I just needsomething to test on.Do you mind if I cut this?EVAN: (laughs)KATELYN: How big do you thinkthe sprinkles should be,like about that big?EVAN: Yeah.Okay now if I mess this up.You don't mind starting overon the spray paint, do you?Just like, just redothe whole thing, and we'll start from scratch. You know, sometimessprinkles get broken, sometimes there's differentsizes of sprinkles. They're unevenly distributed.Yeah humans snapsprinkles sometimes. What's an alternative?Machines.I'm sure machines addsprinkles too you know? It's probably half, half.Probably more machines.KATELYN: I know I'mstarting it in the cornerand you can't see.EVAN: I can't see anything.I'll show you in a second.Oh yeah! That's a sprinkle.EVAN: (laughs)Why did I ever doubtmyself, this is so easy. They're all different angles.EVAN: I think you shouldspread them further out.KATELYN: I think it'sbetter with some.EVAN: Less is a littlebit more organic. What do you mean organic?Just you know, there'slike bare spatches.Bear spatches?Bear spatches, you know, you get a bear andyou... spatch it.(laughs)We shouldn't bedoing this so late.Don't make me laugh.I'm trying to sprinkle.Don't, no!(laughing) Go away, I hear you.I'm not even on camera, what am I doing here?*loud dad sneeze*Oh my god.I'm sorry.(bright upbeat music)Okay, look at this. It's so dang freaking cute!Evan hasn't seen it yet.I want to do the starstoo before I show him,but I had to showyou guys, just look! It's like a god dang donut! So, I'm gonna tryto do the stars now.Doing it on the back, sothat, if it's bad it's okay.I should zoom this in.Yeah, there you go.It's tough to keep it tiny.I like it.Let's do that abunch more times,Okeey Dokeey.Should I close my eyes?KATELYN: If you want to.Don't step on anything.Oh my gosh! (clapping)Oh that's so adorable!KATELYN: Isn't it cute?Oh, it's even betterthan I pictured! It's so like, StudioGhibli meets Simpsons,or something like that.KATELYN: Yeah, it's kindof a weird combo, but like,it's cute!I love it!I love it!Oh my gosh!KATELYN: Thank you. With the sprinkles, and the gradient, and then the black, and then the littleGhibli sprinkles.KATELYN: Okay, now it istime to pass it off to you,for the electronics!(light piano music)EVAN: Nice, that wasa really good one!Can it fit?Yes.Will this fit?KATELYN: Please fit. We're gonna have to sand outthe opening a little bit.I think it's the paint. The paint added a lotof like, thickness. So I can either drill it out, which has the worryingpossibility ofruining the paint job,as it pulls out.Or I can kind of shove it.KATELYN: I say shove it.All right.(grunting noises)What if we just get some sandpaper and sand the inside?EVAN: Let's get a hammer.Or we could drill it,let me see, look at that.KATELYN: Are yougonna scrape it out?EVAN: Yeah, just scrape it out.KATELYN: Oh, yeah!Gentle, gentle.EVAN: Yes!KATELYN: Yes!Oh, so good, so good. Now, we'll probably have todo that with every singleopening because I'm prettysure I added a load of paintto all of the holes.I'm sorry.Okay, time for ourlittle buttons.EVAN: Okay, okay!KATELYN: Oh nice, nice.Oh, it fits. Can we shove that inthere a little bit more.EVAN: All right that's about it.KATELYN: Oh, that'sall you can do?It's kind of stickingout a lot for a button. But we mocked thisup on the past ones. What do you mean?I didn't know that wasthe deepest it could go.I mean it's okay.I didn't realize it wasgonna stick out that far.EVAN: We'll have toget the power drill. Can we just snip them shorter?EVAN: The magnetgoes in quite deep.Okay.We're drilling!KATELYN: Oh gosh.(drill spinning)Okay, one down.If that had have touched, ifthat had have kept on going, this would havescraped the paint off.(gasps)Thank you for doing this.I know it's frustrating becausewe could have designed itinto the print.EVAN: I thought that thebutton height was fine.Really?(Laughs) Really?Really, you were okay withthat ugly, super tall button? You know how I hate tall things.(laughs)KATELYN: Yes, last one!Yes, yes, yes! That's great.EVAN: Now I just can'tpush that one any more.(laughs)KATELYN: Oh gosh.Hey!Oh my god, theylook really good. They look really good.EVAN: Now, shouldI add the joystick?KATELYN: Oh it fits!EVAN: Oh it does!KATELYN: Oh my gosh,oh my gosh, oh my gosh.Look at that. That is so cute.I love it, I love it so much.I'm so glad that weused little magnetsand actual buttonsfor this part.Okay, to the lights, whatwe originally meant to do.(upbeat techno music)KATELYN: Shove it up in there. How do you feelabout 50/50 odds. You ready?KATELYN: Yeah.It works! It turned on!Yeah, it's just brightin here, hold on.It works! You know, it's subtle. It's subtle butits totally there.I see it and I love it!But, the point of all this. This looks cute. This looks great, I love it.Does it work?Yeah, does it charge a phone?(drum roll)It charged!Yay!It worked right away this time!Oh, it's so great. We did it.It's so cute. We're gonna have to overlay somebeautiful B-Rollright now because, this looks amazing and also, since we used a individualadjustable LEDs,I can have rainbowpatterns play,we can have it changecrazy colors but,I'm really happy withhow this turned out.It looks so cute!KATELYN: Like, more so,even than a lotof things we make. This is true to our mockup, true to our vision.I felt like we both got tolet some of our skills shine. You with your 3Dmodeling, and 3D printing,me with the painting.(upbeat techno music)Isn't it cute?EVAN: With theloading screen too?Look at that loading screen, the custom loading screen!KATELYN: Evan madethe loading screen.Well actually my momembroidered our Evan and KatelynGaming characters, and Evan made it move.Little Supurrvisor, we gottaget Supurrvisor approval!Supurrvisor. (mumbles)I'm sorry, it's midnight,Evan's not functioning anymore. Not that I am, but I thinkyou have it even worse.I'm gonna go getthe Supurrvisor.Joobie, what do youthink about this?Oh, instant investigations!Joobie, it's cat, like you!Is not cat.KATELYN: Look,it's got cat ears!I am cat.KATELYN: Are you a little ham?Want ham.Joobie, what do youthink of our work?Is it quality?
