The Car's Inspection: A Comprehensive Look Under the Hood
As we began to inspect the car, we noticed that it was blowing over something on the engine and just kind of blowing over there. Our mechanic decided to pull out the normal light to get a better idea of what was going on. Upon examination, they found that it was a minor engine oil leak, nothing too serious. The owner was relieved to hear that it wasn't a major issue.
Moving on, we took a closer look at the aftermarket exhaust system and were surprised to see that a resonator had failed. This was quite unexpected, but our mechanic reassured us that it was not a catastrophic failure. They noted that it did have a rather corvettish design to it, which hinted that it might be related to the transmission or other components.
As we continued to inspect the car, we noticed that one of the shocks had leaked fluid, but fortunately, it was just a small amount. Our mechanic was pleased to see that the shock absorbers were dry and functioning properly. They explained that this particular type of shock absorber was shared with some Corvettes and was designed to provide active suspension.
Next, we focused on the exhaust system and discovered that there was a valve cover gasket issue. Upon closer inspection, we found that it was just barely wet at the corner. Our mechanic noted that replacing this gasket would be a moderately complex job, as it required removing some intakes and coils to access it. However, they assured us that it wasn't too bad once you got down to it.
As we were inspecting the car, our owner casually mentioned that they had been researching motorcycles, specifically a Super Lagger V4 100 grand for $100. They expressed interest in purchasing this motorcycle, which sparked a conversation about how much money was being spent on repairs versus other luxury items.
Our mechanic shared some news from their office, stating that they hadn't visited the shop recently and were now researching ways to fix the owner's air conditioning system without having to tear down the entire dash. They discovered that instead of pulling out the whole center stack bezel, they could simply pull away the central part of it to access the actuators on either side of the HVAC box.
The mechanic provided an estimate for the repairs, stating that the valve cover gasket replacement would take 12 hours and cost $1,500 at a dealership. However, their price was $1,500, which was significantly lower. They also mentioned that the actuator components were around $300 each, which rounded out to be approximately $3,000 total.
The mechanic explained that while neither of the issues were extremely urgent, they were certainly time-consuming and labor-intensive repairs. The owner appreciated their candor and willingness to work within a budget. Our conversation was interrupted by the sound of another car being worked on in the shop, but our mechanic assured us that we would be able to trade out the car for one of the Ferrari or Murcielago when they were finished with it.
The Conversation Continues
As we sat down to discuss the repairs in more detail, our owner mentioned that they normally brought a camera to take photos of the cars being repaired. However, today was no exception and instead opted to have a conversation about their beloved car. The mechanic acknowledged that the car did have its share of issues, but assured us that it wasn't a complete disaster.
The owner expressed concerns about the reputation of these luxury cars, particularly with regards to the negative influence they seemed to have on some people's minds. Our mechanic shared their thoughts on this topic, stating that while the cars certainly have their flaws, they are not inherently bad and should be judged based on individual experiences rather than preconceived notions.
As we wrapped up our conversation, the owner expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share their car with us and thanked us for the influence we had on YouTube. The mechanic smiled and replied that it was indeed a pleasure to work on such a unique vehicle, and they looked forward to trading in the car when they were finished with it. With that, our conversation came to an end, but not before we had gained a deeper understanding of this complex and fascinating car.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: encar's claim to fame is the v12 which was sourced from the enzo enzo v12 i put the windows down so you can hear it it's holy moly 612 horsepower there it is beautiful there's some dripping uh oh that's strange it tastes really weird what is that welcome to hovie's garage the dumbest automotive channel in all of youtube and today we are heading to the car wizard with my 2008 ferrari 599 which i have just purchased it is the greatest ferrari gt ever in my opinion but nobody wants these things because it's the end of the line for the f1 paddle shift flappy paddle gearbox which is actually fantastic in this car but maybe i'll be converting it to a gated manual down the road at some point but also because of the maintenance upkeep but i'm kind of hoping the previous owner's pain on this car is my pleasure because in the last four years it's had about forty thousand dollars in maintenance really fifty thousand dollars if you include the elective surgeries and things but uh really a lot of work done recently including a new clutch but there is some other gotchas and i didn't do a pre-purchase inspection on this car before i purchased it because this is the dumbest automotive channel in all of youtube and where's the fun in knowing what you're getting before you buy it i mean it's better this way right especially on expensive ferraris so let's head up to the car wizard see what he thinks of this car look at it see if there's any issues and then we're gonna check on the other exotics we actually found the leak on the lamborghini murcielago it was leaking from the front power steering fluid and the ferrari 456 a gated manual grand touring coupe another car that i absolutely love from ferrari has finally started acting up and it is the best thing to break ever on that car i am so excited so let's head up what is the car was her doing wizard wizard are you bonding with your new beetle yes i love this thing well clearly it's a turbo uh but is it you got another stick shift car i thought you swore off stick shifts well i say things i don't always mean them this one is very light and easy to do though okay this is about your third or fourth beetle when you swore off beetles too i love beetles now okay oh my goodness yeah yeah 2008 ferrari 599. oh you like the carbon ceramics huh got my attention away from the beetle now i i guess uh wow you know this is kind of the ferrari that nobody wants though they sell for about the same as a 430 coupe which makes no sense how could they not want this yeah i don't really get it at all personally especially this one in this spec uh no sale to bring a trailer for 130 which is pretty darn low 30 000 miles clean history the venusia paints the msrp was like 400 grand 370 something way up there new goodness i know and they were selling for over msrp news so whatever happened i don't know this is the unwanted gt ferrari it's so beautiful i love the front end on these yeah and it drives even better you have to hop in come on wizard okay the daytona seats give you a little hug huh they are so comfortable though they are pretty comfy this interior is amazing yeah yeah it smells good too it does it does smell good and the carbon fiber look at these two little bumps here you like my bumps yeah i like the valley in between them this car's claim to fame is the v12 which was sourced from the enzo enzo v12 i put the windows down so you can hear it it's holy moly 612 horsepower man this thing means business and the shifts from the f1 gearbox they are lightning fast that is lightning fast it's got a brand new clutch on it 8 300 rpm redline too i know i can hear that it's nuts wow as far as issues go there's not many the radio is a little flaky with the volume knob it triggers an error but i don't care about that the only weird one is this i turn on the ac and your side is cold but feel my side yours is lukewarm yeah it's not getting air conditioned air that's probably a temperature actuator is it deep in the dash dash out with the leather and the carbon fiber and everything i'll have to see i'll have to look into that hopefully not okay well hopefully there's not any other issues like uh the suspension on these is a very expensive repair i bet the magnetic ride shocks would share with the c6 corvette uh but otherwise i'm not too worried unless it'll pull no fade at all i think you outdid yourself this time i think the only car that i remember being this fast was when you had that mp412c that was pretty fast the gt500 is about as quick as this thing but uh yeah that's about it sounds so good it's glorious well this is a thing huh this is definitely a thing i showed this to the car ninja before i came up here he said the paint color was ugly ugly yeah the venusia the the purple it's gorgeous where are we putting this thing it looks like every single lift of yours is tied up well we could actually get the 456 off we found out what's wrong what's going on with that we could take a look at it and then get it off of this four post lift okay well you kind of gave me a hint and it looks like uh the hint is over here so underneath the 456 is no exhaust right now it's just the uh the headers i guess but it has four outlets for the headers huh four exhaust manifolds so this was an intermittent problem that we couldn't get to do with you and i thought i was gonna give up and drive this thing home where it was actually going down on one bank and making a noise what i thought was uh the fuel pumps running in the back kind of like a moaning like a after i would shut the car off for a long time but actually it wasn't that you finally got to act up and it was the exhaust yep on the passenger side the canada converter actually had a meltdown so the exhaust was sort of clogged do you think or was it it could be had a failure probably maybe even when you got the car slowly it's gotten worse and this happened when it was really hot out i remember like 100 and 104 yes this is about the happiest failure i've ever had on a car because my goal is to make this thing sound better it sounds like a vacuum cleaner almost silent for a v12 ferrari it's it's offensively quiet it definitely doesn't sound like that no no with a gated manual transmission in this thing uh comfy four-seat cruiser i love the car but hated the sound and now we fixing it because we have to so this resonator came off this can go away so actually had a resonator delete waiting to go in on this thing but then the catalytic converters uh you can't get factory replacements anymore if you did they'd be obscene i imagine right yes very expensive and we need these because we have to keep your check engine light keep your thermocouple happy all that things to keep everything going smooth and to be legal so what happened to it you could take a look inside of here and you can see something moving in there oh so it's like a maraca you can pick it up right you can that's uh that's the house so this one okay this one is actually is okay okay so that was the left side yeah but it had a meltdown where the catalyst just went bad on it okay well it hasn't been up here for a little while did you notice anything else while it was here it does have a small leak on the oil pan well let's that's not small it's oily everywhere dripping through the nuts we need to tighten up your nuts here tyler okay so you're gonna tighten up my nuts for me and then my leak should go away yeah we'll probably get new ones that reseals the threads and then that's typical on these yeah i'm thinking about getting a vasectomy too but anyway kids are starting school soon so uh and then the murcielago is here as well it had a leak from the front but it was power steering which is very concerning let's go over to it so the murcielago is back down on the ground is that uh good news well i'm actually very disappointed really yeah because i was expecting some shocks to be rebuilt or a new rack to put in and i saw a good payday coming and all it was is one of the lines goes into the rack it has copper washers they were just a little loose yes so just a little washer going into the rack because if it was the steering rack that'd be probably like five ranges for the part five to seven in that range and then the shocks that'd be even worse so uh probably 10 grand because it has that front lift shock so i got lucky unlike the diabolo where i had to do both this one is just a copper washer yes we tightened it up road tested it stays dry okay so it's just up here waiting for an oil service then yep we're waiting on the oil filter to come in we're going to do the service on it and then it's ready to go all right well hopefully it's more good news on the 599 that is fantastic but now we need to get the 456 down and it is well technically straight piped you know it's going to be very loud it'll be enough to where we could move it over there but we wouldn't want to drive it that way a long distance i want to hear it you want to hear it all right let's do it no fires please we've already had that once in my life i don't know what that sounds like sounds terrible no i don't i don't even want to drive it off like that that just sounds bad yeah it does it sounds really lumpy and bad yeah yeah let's just push it off because that's okay that's not the kind of straight pipe you want to hear that was yeah that sounds like a demolition derby or something yep okay oh you mean steer it okay wizard strength visibility is so good on this car and the parking sensors really made it a breeze and then oh there's a breeze right through there too wizard you see the flying buttress yes hole it creates down force but the prettiest part is probably the engine there it is beautiful yeah just a work of art isn't it yeah there's a bunch of extra wiring in the valley yeah i think that's for the beefed up cooling fan the guy lived in texas and he was worried about it so he beefed up the cooling system including some high very high velocity fans it sounds really loud with the fans yeah which i mean considering how hot it is right now i sure don't mind it but yeah otherwise very stock could use a detail but very very tidy notice how it's mounted sort of behind the front wheels so you have a mid-engined enzo derived v12 so if you do work on this you're working on an enzo engine an enzo engine yep yes 612 horsepower but nobody wants this thing apparently not with the price you got it for and the main reason is the scary maintenance which on this car the last four years is about 50 grand worth of receipts some of them elective but there's a lot of big ones in there like the clutch 20 grand or so oh no no one wants the idea of having to put money into a car like this i suppose but i mean that's sort of what brings these cars down a 430 has an f1 transmission just like this so what's the deal i have no idea well hopefully we don't find that idea when you put it up in the air and we start finding stuff just fingers crossed but you're double crossing so you're canceling me out now you're okay whatever that is it's a vulcan crossing fingers can you do that somebody's gonna say that's offensive in some country okay here we go probably a lot of underbody panels yes but what we want to see is dry underbody panels yeah so far so good we can take a peek up through here there's his fans here talking about you can see him those are some new looking nice beefy fans huh those are very beefy nothing's wet in there no no cooling or anything that's awesome well how about my shocks because that's the one thing people are very very scared of see if i can they look nice and dry to me on this side the pads are well half gone but they're still good yeah on the big carbon ceramic break which you sure don't want to replace one of those either no there's a there's a thing here there's some dripping uh oh that's strange it tastes really weird what is that is that air conditioning oil let me go get a little fluorescent light i have real quick okay pull this out of my beetle i wish it playing with it even has a glowing tip it's a probe okay a fluorescent probe that's just a normal oil color so it must be just an oil leak it's not ac oh well why is it just around there it could be leaking from something on the engine and just kind of blowing over there let me get my normal light we'd have to pull all these panels down and really get an idea of what it is but it is a pretty minor leak though it's a minor engine oil leak or something it's nothing that's pouring itself okay all right this side over here is dry well we can lower it back down in a minute and get a mirror back there and see if we can see anything otherwise under body panels have to come off but uh yeah moving on looks like uh here's our aftermarket exhaust here kind of like what we're doing on the 456 it looks like a resonator has gone my buy huh this looks very corvettish really what the fact that the transmission and stuff's back oh yeah yeah the idea but not the um everything's dry back on this panel yeah are my shocks back here looking you can see it through here they're dry oh that's good that one's nice and dry mm-hmm i'll go check this one delphi shocks yep shared with corvette nice and dry it goes all the way back to the 355 with the zr1 and the same kind of active shock from delphi so toby yep to be a valved exhaust i think because i see the little vacuum pods there well i don't see anything else going on let's go ahead and lower it down and check out that leak okay oh there's more plastic fantastic but i think oh i can see it it's a valve cover gasket you can see it just barely through it's wet at the corner down there oh okay that looks pretty involved to get to though since these intakes have to come off huh yep and coils everything have to come out to get to it it's not too bad once you get down to it but it can be labor intensive and we also need to see what's going on with your dash checking what it's going to take to get to those little actuators okay so a little research to do in the office we haven't been there in a while nope all right motorcycle shopping huh oh yes this is a super lagera v4 100 grand 100 dollars for a motorcycle yeah oh man i would love to have that and i think if we get this thing going on this 599 no no no no surely not well it's it's italian yes but it's only two things on this car that need to be fixed so uh dream cheaper all right well i do have something to show you i don't need oh going through all my tabs well we want to go yeah let's not show every tab you have open because ah so that's is that to fix my air conditioning yeah so instead i don't have to pull the whole dash i can just pull the center stack bezel away you see i can just reach my hand there's actuators on each side of the hvac box here i can be able to get to them and very likely do the job that major tear down so that should be cheaper right do i even need to sit down i mean it's only two things well it's not cheap but it's not super expensive either okay so uh valve cover gasket it's a 12-hour job and then the price of gaskets at a dealership you're looking at three grand just to do the valve covers but your price is 1500 bucks a 12-hour job 12-hour job really yep okay fifteen hundred dollars and then the aci are skipping ahead here so thirteen hundred dollars to but it's right there you just have to put a few things off carefully time consuming i don't wanna buy you a new dash how much are the actuators they're two or three hundred dollars each not too bad okay so you round it up to three thousand dollars really that should be twenty eight hundred dollars that gives us a little wiggle room i see well neither of them are very urgent things and clearly you have a lot going on in your shop right now so we'll wait until i guess one of the ferrari or the murcielago is done or something else and then i'll trade you out when i'm done driving it but yeah i'm not in a hurry to give it away i imagine you're not so it's a little awkward because normally i bring my big camera for us to sit across but anyway uh i didn't expect to have to sit down with this car and it does have a few issues yeah three brands a lot but it's not bad for that car these cars aren't disasters surely and hopefully these cars can have a little bit less of this bad reputation this bad juju with what little influence i have on youtube which thank you so much for watching and giving me that influence and giving the wizard a lot of money yes thank you for the moneycar's claim to fame is the v12 which was sourced from the enzo enzo v12 i put the windows down so gasket you can see it just barely through it's wet at the corner down there oh okay that looks pretty involved to get to though since these intakes have to come off huh yep and coils everything have to come out to get to it it's not too bad once you get down to it but it can be labor intensive and we also need to see what's going on with your dash checking what it's going to take to get to those little actuators okay so a little research to do in the office we haven't been there in a while nope all right motorcycle shopping huh oh yes this is a super lagera v4 100 grand 100 dollars for a motorcycle yeah oh man i would love to have that and i think if we get this thing going on this 599 no no no no surely not well it's it's italian yes but it's only two things on this car that need to be fixed so uh dream cheaper all right well i do have something to show you i don't need oh going through all my tabs well we want to go yeah let's not show every tab you have open because ah so that's is that to fix my air conditioning yeah so instead i don't have to pull the whole dash i can just pull the center stack bezel away you see i can just reach my hand there's actuators on each side of the hvac box here i can be able to get to them and very likely do the job that major tear down so that should be cheaper right do i even need to sit down i mean it's only two things well it's not cheap but it's not super expensive either okay so uh valve cover gasket it's a 12-hour job and then the price of gaskets at a dealership you're looking at three grand just to do the valve covers but your price is 1500 bucks a 12-hour job 12-hour job really yep okay fifteen hundred dollars and then the aci are skipping ahead here so thirteen hundred dollars to but it's right there you just have to put a few things off carefully time consuming i don't wanna buy you a new dash how much are the actuators they're two or three hundred dollars each not too bad okay so you round it up to three thousand dollars really that should be twenty eight hundred dollars that gives us a little wiggle room i see well neither of them are very urgent things and clearly you have a lot going on in your shop right now so we'll wait until i guess one of the ferrari or the murcielago is done or something else and then i'll trade you out when i'm done driving it but yeah i'm not in a hurry to give it away i imagine you're not so it's a little awkward because normally i bring my big camera for us to sit across but anyway uh i didn't expect to have to sit down with this car and it does have a few issues yeah three brands a lot but it's not bad for that car these cars aren't disasters surely and hopefully these cars can have a little bit less of this bad reputation this bad juju with what little influence i have on youtube which thank you so much for watching and giving me that influence and giving the wizard a lot of money yes thank you for the money\n"
