around an urban grid and cover a lot of ground quickly in general and it's been with a scooter or a motorcycle a decade ago zero started selling full-size electric motorcycles and there are more of an Acurio City than a hot seller for urban commuters meat but niche jump back to 2018 and 0 has now hatched a fully formed commuting ninja called the DSR they handed one over to us at Digital Trends and we put it to work for several weeks during the winter here in traffic clogged Portland Oregon our zero DSR dual-sport came with the 13 kilowatt hour battery and you can get up to about 16 kilowatts total and included features like three ride modes ABS a handy app and pretty much everything you'd expect on a real-deal motorcycle except for gears and that big gas burning motor as such a longtime writer of traditional motorcycles like myself can pretty much hop on and just start riding but with a few mental adjustments for the missing shifter and the missing noise so what does the DSR like to ride well in that most important metric fun to ride it pretty much scores at 10 or at least a 9.5 it's good sized feels solid has a comfortable seat great brakes adjustable suspension aggressive dirt trail worthy tires that also work well on crumbling urban infrastructure and to him it's fast but only if you want to be the dsr features an eco ride mode for maximizing battery life and the performance here is more like a scooter with calm acceleration and softened up throttle response it's perfect for beginners or for just tooling around town where big power isn't needed but it can still hit freeway speeds but they should name it relaxed mode because that's how I felt while using it pretty relaxed now sport mode is just the opposite it basically turns the DSR s performance capabilities up to 11 and you'd best be holding on when the throttle gets twisted since the air-cooled electric motor will unleash pretty much all of its 116 foot-pounds of torque at nearly 80 horsepower right from zero rpm and since there are no gears the dsr just keeps on going faster and faster and faster which can get you into a trouble kind of quick in the city don't ask me now I know this but out on the open road triple digit speeds can't arrive in a hurry trust me you won't have any trouble passing pretty much anything sport mode performance is on par with or better than many 600cc performance machines by way of comparison because of all that torque it really satisfies between eco and sport mode is custom mode and you use the well-designed 0 app to set up your own performance parameters as well as keep tabs on things like charging and other data bits I set up custom mode to be quicker than Eco mode but not as battery draining as sport mode and I usually left it in custom mode most of the time it would actually be nice if users could set more than one custom mode setup such as one just for a dirt riding and so on this is an electric motorcycle after all so there's that range thing to think about Eco mode got me about a hundred miles of distance between needing to plug it in again while sport and custom mode didn't go quite that far because the fun factor eats up more juice just like with a gasoline engine but on average while riding say enthusiastically I got between 80 and 90 miles per charge but just plug it in in the dsr will be charged up again in a few hours or you can at least get some decent range in the tank as it were in less time the small included 120 volt charger plugs into any wall outlet just like a toaster you can stow it and a lot of other stuff in this handy storage cubby that's located where a gas tank would normally be if you get the optional quick charger you do lose this little convenient cubby though and frankly I'd rather have that handy storage bin which as you can see I used a lot electric motorcycles are still not quite ready for long distance riding adventures unless you're really really patient but for busting out errands commuting to work and even playing in the dirt on the outskirts of town we had nothing but fun and zero problems with the zero DSR it truly is the ultimate commuting tool and yes it is expensive up front at about $17,000 depending on how you option it up and that is before any state and federal tax incentives or refunds and while that is a lot of coin to drop on a bike that won't cross the country on a single charge that really isn't the dsr s mission anyway this is a solid fun machine with breathtaking acceleration a slim almost mountain bike like profile and you never ever have to tune it up change the oil the valence or put a single drop of gas in it in time those expenses really add up so think of the dsr is a long-term investment that will save you cash down the line especially if you can charge it up for free at work or for very low cost at a public charger bottom line the 0d srs shows that electric motorcycles with real-deal performance technology and
