The Transcription of the Video: A Review of Intel's Coffee Lake CPUs
Linus started off by making a joke about the CPU they were reviewing being named after the "Coffee Lake" processor. This was followed by an announcement that Thanks to Tunnel Bear, tunnel bear makes it easy to privately and securely browse the more open internet. The review would be discussing the Core i7 8700K and Core i5 8400 CPUs, which are part of Intel's 8th generation Core Series, codenamed Coffee Lake.
The reviewer noted that both the 8th gen chips and the 300 series motherboards they came with were not backwards compatible. This was attributed to the new Z370 chipset being fundamentally a retooled Z270, supporting higher speed DDR4-4666 out of the box and offering improved power delivery. The reviewer mentioned that anyone who had expected a 200 series board to get a CPU upgrade hadn't been following Intel's pattern over the last ten years.
The reviewer also pointed out that AMD's announced long-term support of AM4 might bring about a change in this behavior from Intel, but that remains to be seen. They added that AMD's history is to support sockets for a long time, but with CPUs that nobody really wants to upgrade to. The reviewer acknowledged that it was understandable why people who had invested in fancy Z270 boards would be mad right now.
The reviewer then moved on to the architecture of Coffee Lake, stating that it's more or less just Kaby Lake, which itself was more or less just Sky Lake. They mentioned that there is no AVX-512 support, no PCIe 4.0, and no Hyper-Threading. The reviewer noted that this lack of features does not seem to be a major issue for most users.
The reviewer then went on to discuss the performance of the Coffee Lake CPUs in various workloads. They started by mentioning that system cost has accounted for compared to Kaby Lake, the Core i7 8700K is on par for gaming. The reviewer noted that this was good, but at over a $100 less than the Core i5 8400, it's really disruptive for gamers or entry-level content creators.
The reviewer then discussed the value and performance of the Coffee Lake CPUs in various workloads. They stated that both the Core i7 8700K and the Core i5 8400 are at the top of their respective piles, but the Core i5 8400 sits in the back seat next to Ryzen.
The reviewer finally concluded by stating that Coffee Lake is a major performance win for consumers. They added that it's also good news for Dollar Shave Club, which they were sponsored by. The reviewer noted that it was more than just razors, but also made it easy for customers to upgrade their shave and bathroom products delivered straight to their door.
The reviewer then went on to discuss the details of the sponsorship with Dollar Shave Club. They stated that they were giving away a Shower Shave Starter Set to new members for just $5. The set includes the Executive Razor, premium weighty handle, and full cassette of cartridges. Replacement cartridges are also just a few bucks a month after the first box.
The reviewer finished off by thanking the viewers for watching the video and inviting them to subscribe, like the video, or check out the link to where to buy the featured products.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enLinus, oh heyGet it?A Coffee Lake?!YupOh like the CPU we're reviewingYepOh yeah, well, you know what thanks for thatand while we're at itThanks to tunnel bear tunnel bear makes it easy toprivately and securely browse a more open InternetTry tunnelbear for free go to tunnelbear.com/lttThe core i7 8700 K and core i5 8400 CPUsthat we're reviewing today are members of Intel's 8th generation Core SeriescodenameCoffee LakeThey're built on the improved 14 nm ++ processand they fit in the same socket as 6th and 7th gen processors, butfor those of yourejoicing in the streets that Intel is supporting the same socket for three generationsof desktop chips for the first time in a decade.Think again.Neither 8th gen chips nor the 300 series motherboards that go with them are backwards compatible.Trust us. We tried.Intel has an excuse though at least for the new CPUs to not work in the old boardsBecause the new Z370 chipset even though rumors indicate that it's fundamentally a retooled Z270supports higher speed ddr42666 out of the box andOffers improved power delivery both things that required some tweaks even to hardwareAnd so I don't know like maybe this isworth making a video about like coaching people on how to watch for this stuff becauseAnyone who was expecting a 200 series board to get a CPU upgrade hasn't been following Intel's pattern over the last 10 yearsnow AMD's announced long-term support of am4Might bring about a change in this behavior from Intel, but that remains to be seenAMD's history is to, sure support a socket for a long timebut with CPUs that nobody really wants to upgrade to with all of that said,I totally get why the people who invested in fancy Z270 boards are mad right nowArchitecturally coffee lake is more or less just kaby lake which itself was more or less just sky lakeNo avx-512 no rebalanced smartcache I meanDamn We're not even getting a new HD graphics chip not that I cared about that although hooray for hdcp 2.2. I guesssoThat doesn't sound very compellingBut what is is that we are finally getting a 6 core Intel chip on the mainstreamplatform and at mainstream pricesBut there's more it's not just a 6 core chipWhich is kind of what I would have expected them to do the entire Core i7 and Core i5Lineup are getting the hex treatment complete with additional cacheand this is all at roughly the same TDP as the previous generationSo, if you're upset about thatThen I'm glad because this is a good thingWe all used to get upset aboutEvery new hardware generation, but it's ok salt can taste good. You know it's like ohohHmm like this is what it feels like when oh that's awful. Ah ohoh, I gotta get it off my tongueWhy is this even in hereOk I'm sorry, so this this is what it feels like when technology is actuallyadvancing ahNow there are new core i3's too but those are kind of boring, and we didn't get samplesso let's get to performance of the chips that we have we are going to be doing a lot of testing this time around becausethis isPotentially a huge single generation leap in performancesoWe cracked open our previous generation Intel rig our current gen Ryzen and threw inCore i9 and ThreadRipper for good measure so get your yeehaw ready, cuz it'sgun be one heck of a shootout andthe core i7 8700 KComes out guns blazing in our 1080p gaming tests it predictably trades blows at the top of the keep with its predecessordepending on per game multi-threaded optimizationI curiously it seems to fare slightly worse overall, but it's nothing to cry aboutMore interesting is the core i58400 riding into town with7700 K like performance at an i5 price asFor our 4k gaming tests. Well. These are some super boring if beautiful and high resolutiongraphsThere's a reason that Anthony coined the term the great equalizer for 4k in the core i9 Extreme Edition videoEverything performs the same when the GPU is the bottlenecksynthetic gaming benchmarks tell a similar storymoving on to productivity oh boyThe core i7 8700 K. Kills it here easily surpassing Ryzen inMulti-threaded tests and even approaching the core i9 lineupThanks to its higher core clocksAnd it even decisively snatches the single-threaded crown from its predecessorThanks to its higher turbo and extra cash as for the core i58400 its lack of hyper threading does hurt it here compared to its competitor the Ryzen 5 1600 andSince Ryzen chips are unlocked that gap could widen with overclockingThermals areNot that great for the 8700 K although this seems to be at leastpartially a firmware bug since when overclocked we actually got lower readings andpower consumption is higher than the last gen butNothing like the HEDT and workstation chips that we've been reviewing recentlyLet's talk overclockingIt's pretty simple and there's plenty of fine control including per core overclocks at 5 gigahertzYes, my friends 5 gigahertz 6 cores. We managed a pretty decent improvement in performance on our8700 K giving it similar Headroom to our 7700 K across the board though as always your mileage may varyBringing us to value and it's here that coffee lake shinesWhen system cost has accounted for compared to kaby lake the core i7 8700 k is on par for gamingThat's good, but at over a $100 less than that the core i58400 is the one that's going to be really disruptive be it for gamers or entry-level content creators inproductivity the to actually switch placesThe 8700 k takes the crown here while the 8400 sits in the back seat next to RyzenOver although both of the new intel chips sit pretty at the top of the pilesowas coffee lake a last-minute response to Ryzen, in some respects pricing not to mention the decision to move thei5 line up to six coreIt might be we don't know how good intel's you know corporateespionage is you know maybe they knew Ryzen was gonna be good aYear, and a half two years ago when they would have had to start working on this or maybe they didn'tWhatever was the case this release is a major performance win for the consumerAnd you know what else is the win for the consumer joining Dollar Shave ClubThanks for sponsoring this video you guys if you haven't already give Dollar Shave Club a try. It's more than just razorsThey make it easy for you to upgrade your shave and your bathroomYou don't actually have to leave the house to get high qualityShaving and grooming products delivered straight to your doorAnd they are basically giving away theirShower shave starter set to new members for just 5 bucksIt features the executive razor and free trial sized versions of their most popularProducts that help you stay fresh and clean on your face and on your buttYou'll also receive their executive razorI think I just said that which includes their premium weighty handle and full cassette of cartridges then after the first boxReplacement cartridges are just a few bucks a month so check it out at dollarshaveclub.com/linusWe've got that linked belowSo thanks for watching guys if this video suckedYou know what to doBut it was awesome get subscribed hit that like button or check out the link to where to buy the stuffWe featured it is really highly recommended this time around in the video description also downThere is our merch store, which has cool shirts like this one and our community forum, which you should totally join\n"
