iOS 4.0: Full Details

**iPhone OS 4.0: A Comprehensive Overview**

In this article, we provide a detailed breakdown of iPhone OS 4.0 based on the transcript from Duncan’s video. The event was held just minutes before the recording, and he shares his excitement about the new features and some disappointing news regarding compatibility.

### Multitasking

One of the most anticipated features is multitasking, which works in various ways depending on the app. For example, Pandora streams audio without running the full app, while GPS apps can continue navigating in the background. Duncan emphasizes that not all apps will support full multitasking but highlights the inclusion of a dot indicator for active apps.

### Fast App Switching

Fast app switching complements multitasking by allowing users to save their progress in games and return quickly to where they left off. While it doesn't fully multitask, it's particularly useful for memory-intensive tasks like gaming.

### iBooks on iPhone & iPod Touch

iBooks has arrived on the iPhone and iPod Touch, offering a similar experience to its iPad counterpart. Although not groundbreaking, it’s a welcome addition for users who prefer reading on their mobile devices.

### Folders on Home Screen

A surprising feature is the introduction of folders on the home screen. By dragging apps onto each other, users can create folders with thumbnails of contained apps. This organizational tool is well-implemented and useful for those accustomed to jailbroken phones.

### Custom Wallpaper

Another notable update is the ability to change the home screen wallpaper, a feature previously associated with jailbreaking. While it doesn’t match the customization of Winterboard, it’s still a nice touch.

### Mail App Improvements

The mail app has been redesigned with a unified inbox, supporting multiple accounts and enhanced Exchange features. Although Duncan finds it visually similar, he acknowledges its utility for users with numerous email accounts.

### Game Center: iPhone's Xbox Live

Game Center introduces multiplayer capabilities, allowing users to join lobbies and earn achievements. This feature is compared to Xbox Live, promising to revolutionize gaming on iOS devices once developers adopt it.

### Bluetooth Support

iPhone OS 4.0 supports Bluetooth for keyboard connectivity, similar to the iPad experience. However, only newer devices like iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch third generation are compatible.

### iAd: Innovative Advertising

iAd allows ads to function as apps, offering features like video playback and app downloads. Demonstrated examples include Toy Story movie trailers and theater listings, showcasing its potential despite being an advertisement.

### Compatibility Limitations

A significant downside is the lack of support for older devices like iPhone 3G and first-generation iPod Touch. These users can update to OS 4.0 but will miss out on key features like multitasking. Similarly, the original iPhone and iPhone 2G are no longer supported.

### iPad Updates

While the event focused on iPhone and iPod Touch, Duncan mentions that iPhone OS 4.0 will come to the iPad this fall. However, specific details remain unclear.

### Developer Previews & Release Date

Developer previews were released around the time of the event, with a public rollout planned for summer. Duncan expresses excitement about testing and using the new features, despite personal disappointment over his own device’s incompatibility.

In conclusion, iPhone OS 4.0 offers significant advancements while highlighting some limitations. The combination of multitasking, folders, and iAd makes it an exciting update for supported devices. While older devices are left behind, the future holds promise with updates for the iPad.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys what is up it's Duncan and today I'm here with the full rundown of the iPhone OS 4.0 event it just finished up literally guys less than five minutes ago so I'm going to go ahead and run you guys through everything we know guys I'm excited this so much new stuff has come out multitasking uh really cool basically Xbox Live um some really interesting ads that actually look like basically apps I mean guys lot of a lot of really cool new stuff also uh a little bit the bad news too but I'll go ahead and get all that in just a second anyway let's get this one started okay guys so uh excuse me like I said just finished up just like no more than a couple minutes ago so I got my computer here um but let's go ahead and go over the number one thing that I was definitely looking for which is multitasking it looks excellent um basically multitasking Works in a lot of different ways depending on what app you want um it's not going to be the standard multitasking or basically just the app runs um there's lots of different kinds of multitasking for example like Pandora uses a multitasking that uses just music so basically it just lets you stream the audio the app itself really isn't running but the audio that the app would use is um there's also a lot of different ones like uh GPS apps can now you know like as you're let's say you you know you have your iPhone in the car and you're driving the GPS can be running in the background and basically just say turn left or whatever but you can still be doing other things and then there is of course just straight up full multitasking which allows the app to be fully running but they weren't quite clear which app can and can't do that so but it looks very very good um when you do the uh multitasking a small dot comes up from the bottom and each icon is of what games you're running so it really really looks solid um the next thing is actually fast app switching which is sort of in with the multitasking but not really basically it allows an app to let's say you're playing a game which is using up most of the iPhone or iPod Touches memory Well it can't be backgrounded but it can basically put like a bookmark where it is you exit out of it and it's still shows there and then when you come back to it it very very quickly it comes right back to where it was it's not full m multitasking but for games that really leverage the full Hardware of the iPhone or iPod Touch it's a really good idea now the next one is a few smaller things but I'll go ahead and cover them real quickly iBooks is coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch it's okay it's it's nothing amazing basically looks just like iBooks on the iPad but it's it's not too bad okay so the next thing is something actually nobody really expected um but basically now there are folders in the iPhone OS no not folders like you would think folders for your apps and basically what you do is on your home screen um basically let's say you want to make a folder where you take one of your apps and just push it on top of the other it drops and a folder is created and then you can drop as many different apps as you want in there and then basically it will actually have um the the app icon will actually have the like thumbnails of the apps that are inside of it in the thumbnail um doesn't look like amazing of course if you've been jailbroken you've had something kind of similar before but it does look pretty nice and it definitely looks really well implemented all you have to do is click it and then a uh drop down menu kind of comes up and then you can look down and see all the apps click it it opens up pretty cool while we're on the subject of the home screen let's go ahead and talk about something that most people expected um now you can change the wallpaper of course we saw this on the iPad and this has been probably the number one thing that makes people jailbreak but now you have full control over what kind kind of background you want on your home screen of course it's not still is not as good as you know actually making custom icons and everything like on winterboard with if you're jailbroken but it's still a pretty nice touch okay so the next feature is the mail app it's been redesigned and with some pretty cool features uh the most important thing definitely is that it's unified so all your mail accounts all go into a single mailbox as well as you have additional exchange support and a lot of other really cool things that people have been waiting for personally I mean it's to me it still looks the same and I'm not going to really use it that much I don't exactly have a lot of email accounts or anything but a lot of people do and I know it's going to be very helpful um so now guys this is probably one of actually the surprising things that were the biggest um basically there's now going to be a game center um the game center sum it up basically it's like Xbox Live iPhone you have uh it's full multiplayer so all your games um can be hooked up into multiplayer you can join lobbies um you can text to friends um you even get achievements um it really looks solid um we haven't tried this out yet obviously um but from the demo it looks really really cool and uh I can't wait till games start implementing achievements and everything in there and I don't know what they're going to call the achievement points hopefully something cool but uh it looks really really solid okay guys so we're down to the last couple things um one kind of nice thing is that the iPhone OS 4.0 now supports Bluetooth um Now it only supports devices who have that have Bluetooth such as like the iPod Touch third generation second generation iPhone 3GS you know um the ones that have Bluetooth but now you can hook up a Bluetooth keyboard very similarly to how you do it with the iPad type away it works great um now the last major feature is I add terrible name I I doesn't go on top of everything but uh I add actually is a really cool concept basically apple is running their own advertising and basically you can really for all intents and purposes create an app um so like let's say you're browsing on like an app or something and the app and you see the ad well you click it it basically launches a full app I mean you can go ahead and go watch videos like like they showed Toy Story and Nike and several others but like the Toy Story one was my favorite so basically inside that is really interesting I mean you can go watch videos um you can like download like a home screen uh background um you can go even like show like download The Toy Story apps um it can like like hit it and it'll open up like a a list of theaters around your area I mean it's really really cool and the thing is I mean it's just an ad I mean it looks like like a really like indepth uh like app but it's actually an ad so I mean I think this looks really cool and it's as much as it looks like an app and everything it is of course just totally streamed it's not like you're actually downloading or anything you just click on it and everything pops up of course if you're on maybe a slower connection I don't know if they're going to be how it's going to work it's might get slow or whatever um but of course you know we don't know everything yet but actually I'm surprised I add looks really cool I mean you know I actually would like probably want to click on ass to see that kind of stuff I mean it's a full deal now we get to the sort of bad side um iPhone OS 4.0 is going to be fully supported on the iPod Touch third generation and the IP and the iPhone 3 yes so they will get multitasking they will get everything unfortunately if you have an iPhone 3G or an iPod touch second generation you do get a lot of the features in 4.0 but you do not get multitasking along with some other unspecified features we don't really know what that means um so that's a real big downside if you have an iPhone 3G or an iPod touch second generation you can go ahead and update to 4.0 but you're not going to get a lot of the really cool features like multitasking so that's that's that's kind of bad um and it gets worse um a lot of people expected it but um the iPod Touch first generation and the iPhone 2g or the original iPhone neither of them are compatible with 4.0 so you know until whatever you're on right now 3.0 or 3.1 or whatever you are on that's about the end of the line unfortunately so anyway guys um on the whole of it I'm really excited about iPhone OS 4.0 I'm kind of disappointed I can't update my iPod Touch to it or at least with for with full multitasking but still it really really looks solid and I'm looking forward to really using it out um developer previews shipped today sometime I'm not sure if they're they might be out already or they might come in later the day and uh they say this summer it will be iPhone OS will be downloadable for everybody uh who's not a developer also iPhone OS 4.0 they really didn't actually get into it about the iPad um it was all focused on the iPhone and iPod Touch they did say that iPhone OS 4.0 is coming to the IP IP ad this fall and so we can expect multitasking and everything like that to come this fall but they didn't actually get into specifics that actually never really showed the iPad so we don't know if maybe it gets more features maybe it gets less we really don't know but anyway guys that is my full wrap up of the iPhone OS 4.0 event really excited it looks fantastic and uh yeah anyway guys if you have any questions leave them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them anyway thanks for watchinghey guys what is up it's Duncan and today I'm here with the full rundown of the iPhone OS 4.0 event it just finished up literally guys less than five minutes ago so I'm going to go ahead and run you guys through everything we know guys I'm excited this so much new stuff
