Varmilo VA87M Mechanical Keyboard

The Vermo VA87M Mechanical Keyboard Review

As I first laid eyes on the Vermo VA87M mechanical keyboard, I couldn't help but notice its disproportionately large size compared to its weight. However, as I began to use it, I found that this characteristic actually gave me a new feeling of stability from above, and I wasn't expecting it at all. The keyboard's ergonomic design, with two rubber foldout feet on the bottom, provides additional support and keeps the board anchored at all times. Additionally, five more rubber pads are distributed throughout the board to prevent any movement or wobble.

One feature that caught my attention was the mini USB port located at the rear side of the keyboard. This allows for easy power supply, courtesy of a 5ft rubber cable included with the keyboard. I'm not typically a fan of removable cables, as they can wear out over time and cause issues. However, in this case, the inclusion of left, right, and rear cable channels helps minimize potential cord movement.

The keycaps on the Vermo VA87M are laser etched in gray using a simple font that's easy to read. One notable exception is the space bar, which features a different font - Comic Sans. Yes, you read that right; 9-year-old me must have had a hand in this design decision. While I appreciate the effort to be unique, I do think someone at Vermo needs a timeout.

The keyboard's keycap remover only works on non-space bar keys, which is slightly disappointing. However, this isn't a major issue, as the keyboard still offers secondary key functions for things like volume control, mute, and multimedia playback. I was pleased to see that both lock keys have a glossy indent on top, likely where the Windows logo would sit.

One feature that sets the Vermo VA87M apart from other mechanical keyboards is its LED backlighting. The LEDs are adjustable to four varying levels of brightness or can be turned off completely using the function and arrow keys. I found myself perfectly happy with level two brightness when typing in the dark, but I do think level four would have been a better choice for those who prefer a brighter light.

The keyboard also features white LED backlighting beneath the switches, which creates a unique aesthetic. The lower half of each keycap is semi-transparent to allow light to illuminate the laser etched engravings. This effect becomes more apparent at higher brightness levels, but I did find myself limited by my own personal preference for level two.

Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the switch used in the Vermo VA87M is a Cherry MX Brown. As someone who's used both cherrymx Reds and Browns, I was pleased to find that typing on this keyboard felt like what you'd expect from a board with this type of switch - subtle yet detectable tactile bump, low force properties, and minimal effort required for keystrokes.

The fresh minty keycaps themselves are incredibly smooth, so smooth that I noticed my finger slipping around ever so slightly when typing up a storm. It's possible that this is due to the keyboard not being fully broken in yet, with all of my natural skin oils providing that extra bit of friction over time.

In conclusion, the Vermo VA87M mechanical keyboard comes in pretty much every Cherry MX switch available, as well as various keycap and etching options. Avid desktop users without the need for a numpad or macro keys will appreciate the heavy-duty weight and feel. If you can look past a few minor aesthetic choices, the build quality and performance fall right in line with other mechanical keyboards at this price point.

Finally, if you're willing to overlook some minor flaws, the Vermo VA87M is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable mechanical keyboard without breaking the bank. The fact that it's likely to find a killer deal on Mastodon drops only adds to its appeal.
