The Dodge Dart: A Competitive Compact Sedan with Potential
The Dodge Dart finally gives Chrysler a competitive compact sedan with more than a Little Help from their corporate parent Fiat. The dart enters into a super competitive compact segment full of good cars like Suburban, Hyundai Elant, or the Ford Focus Chevrolet Cruz. There's a whole bunch of stuff to compete against here.
Is there anything about the dart that stands out well? The header orange paint it definitely stands out, it's the same color that old Hemi engine blocks used to be painted but you're not buying a car just because of the color are you. Optional features like a heated steering wheel and blind spot monitoring they're fairly unique in this class cabin Electronics stand out with the optional UK connect 8.4 touchscreen, it's full featured and easy to use we'd pick it instead of the regular radio controls.
Handling is also pretty good, steering wheel it feels beefy and the dart is responsive and enjoyable to toss about. The ride is steady and controlled but there can be some rubbery jiggle at low speeds road nois is kept well under control and the car feels substantial but there's a trade-off here that solid feel it adds weight which is one reason why this car's fuel economy just isn't all that great.
But are there other downsides of the dart? Yep, the front cloth seats aren't all that comfortable or supportive even though they were improved for 2014. The leather seats are better, the rear seats okay but given the car substantial Dimensions we'd expect a little more room here thick roof pillars don't make looking out easy for the driver and you need to duck a lot to get in and out of the low slung Dart.
All of this adds up to a flawed compact sedan but one that does feel like it has potential. Just seems like this is a decent car that's looking for a few good drivetrains, because with the right engine, the dart could become a real contender in its class.
