Jaguar's First SUV: A Worthwhile Wait
Jaguar may have taken its time with its crossover debut, but it seems that the wait was worth it. The all-new 2017 Jaguar FPCE is a vehicle that embodies the perfect blend of style, comfort, and performance. With its sleek styling, spacious interior, and variety of comfort and convenience features, the FPCE is sure to become a popular choice for those seeking a fun-to-drive luxury crossover.
The FPCE is offered in five well-equipped trim levels, all of which are available with all-wheel drive. Our test car was the 35t Prestige model, equipped with optional Vision Technology and Comfort Plus Convenience Packages. The base FPCE model comes with three different engines: a fuel-efficient 2L 4-cylinder diesel expected to achieve around 40 MPG on the highway. However, we prefer the two variants of the more powerful 3L V6, which are paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Behind the wheel, the FPCE has great visibility and feels really planted to the road, not tall and clumsy like some SUVs. It corners well and handles itself like a luxury sedan for the most part, with some sports car precision thrown in for good measure. The Supercharged V6 is available as an option, which adds even more power and excitement to the driving experience.
However, we do have one major quibble with the FPCE: the Auto Stop/Start feature that can be turned off but always resets itself to on each time you shut the car off. While there are some less-than-luxurious details, such as the hard plastics on the doors, the abundance of available features is sure to win over even the most discerning family members. For example, the 3G mobile hotspot is a little luxury that will grow on you if you have kids with lots of devices.
The FPCE's elevated stance also makes getting little ones in and out of the car much easier, thanks to the gesture control power lift gate. Multizone climate control and reclining heated rear seats are also standard features that ensure everyone remains comfortable and calm during long drives. The panoramic sunroof helps create a sense of spaciousness, even though it doesn't need much help in that department. The back seat is designed to comfortably seat three adults, and the fold-flat seating in various configurations adds versatility to the roomy cargo area.
When it comes to multimedia systems, Jaguar's InControl Touch infotainment system can be a bit quirky for some users, but once you get used to it, it's attractive and fast. The upgraded InControl Touch Pro has a larger screen and received more positive feedback from reviewers. Innovations like the new Activity Key are ideal for those with an on-the-go lifestyle, allowing drivers who don't want to carry their keys to simply touch the Activity Key to the back of the car and deactive it.
Advanced safety features are also high on the wish list for many buyers, and fortunately, the FPCE delivers. However, be prepared to upgrade to a higher trim level to access some of these advanced technologies. We think opting for larger wheels and tires gives the FPCE a more premium look, but the test car's wheels looked a bit plain compared to what we've seen from Jaguar in terms of its sleek styling.
Despite this minor quibble, the 2017 Jaguar FPCE is sure to become a popular choice for those seeking a fun-to-drive luxury crossover. With its perfect blend of style, comfort, and performance, it's an SUV that's hard to resist.
