The DetroitBorg Reviews the Beats X Headphones
What's going on guys, Mike here, The DetroitBorg, with the very first set of beats headphones I've ever reviewed. These are the Beats X, and they're the most affordable Beats headphones currently available at $149. They're cheaper than the AirPods but have some of the same technology built into them. They also offer better onboard battery life in addition to better sound quality thanks to better noise isolation.
The Beats X come in four colors, and I went with white. These are also available in black, blue, and gray. When it comes to unboxing, the packaging is very nice. We have a tab along the bottom that we can pull off once we do that we can go ahead and lift up the plastic, clear lid. The first thing we'll see here is the headphones, which are very nicely lined up inside this cardboard tray. But of course, once you take them out good luck getting them back in. Again, very nicely presented here.
Before we get to the headphones, let's get to all of the included accessories. On the front, we have a bunch of stuff like charging cables, ear tips, and manuals. There are also some extra parts like wings and weights that help keep the headphones in place when you're not wearing them. The wings are specifically designed for the Beats X to keep them from falling out of your ears.
When it comes to sound quality, I was pleasantly surprised by the Beats X. They do sound very clear and crisp, with a surprisingly open feel for an in-ear headphone style. They also have a warmth or richness to them, which is something that's hard to find in headphones at this price point. The bass is there, but it doesn't drown out everything else like some other Beats products can.
One of the biggest advantages of the Beats X is the inline remote control and microphone. This feature is missing from the AirPods, so if you're looking for something with a traditional controller, these headphones are a great option. You have volume up, volume down, and shoulder controls for pausing music or taking calls. It's all very straightforward and easy to use.
Another really nice touch on the Beats X is that they're magnetic. This means they can snap together and stay together, so when they're around your neck, they sort of act as a loop that prevents them from being pulled off. They also keep everything nice and tidy, so they won't swing around or fall off your shoulder.
In terms of battery life, the Beats X last about 8 hours on a full charge. This is better than the 5 hours or less I was getting with the AirPods. The AirPods have a charging case that can extend their battery life considerably beyond 8 hours, but personally, I think I prefer the 8 hours of uninterrupted listening time.
Overall, I'm really impressed with the Beats X. Their fit is comfortable, they sound fantastic, the design is clever, and are easy to use, especially with iOS and macOS devices. Although they're bulkier than the AirPods and not quite as slick, I definitely prefer them for sound quality and their overall robustness and ease of use. If you're looking for a great pair of headphones that won't break the bank, the Beats X are definitely worth checking out.

qualityThanks to better noise isolationSo these are available in four colors, I went with white but these are also available in black, blue, and graySo getting into the unboxing, very nice packaging hereWe do have a tab along the bottom, that we can pull offOnce we do that we can go ahead and lift up the plastic, clear lid.First thing we'll see here is the headphonesWhich are very nicely lined up inside this cardboard trayBut of course once you take them out good luck getting them back inBut again very nicely presented hereNow before we get to the headphones, lets get to all of the included accessoriesAnd of course there's quite a bit going on hereSo on the front we'll see all of the ear tips that are available in addition to the wingsAnd they're available in two sizesAlong the back we'll find our carrying case and the charging cableNow the carrying case is pretty simple here, it's just enough to protect the headphonesIt wont necessarily keep everything in hereUh, because it's an it's an open caseIt doesn't zip up or anything like thatBut once you stuff the headphones in there, they're nice and protectedSo you don't have to worry about the ear gels sort of pulling off in your pocketAlso included is a very short USB to Lightning cable for charging the headphonesNow this does feature fast fuelWhich means five minutes of charge delivers two hours of playbackBut for a full charge it takes about 45 minutes and that delivers about 8 hours of continuous playbackWhich is is pretty good for bluetooth headphonesFlipping this around again, we'll find three sizes of gels that you can useI find that the ones that came installed worked perfect for my earSo I never had to use theseBut you also get some wing tipsWe have large and smallAnd the large ones is what I had to use for my earsWe also get some paper work and that shouldn't come as any surprise that Apple Music is featured hereSo you do get a three month promotion codeWe also get a quick start guide, a Beats sticker, and some regulatory and warranty infoSo taking a close look at the design of these headphonesWe have these two modules at either end of the neck strapSo we have one with the power buttonAnd the other one with the lightning connector for recharging the internal batteryNow the neck strap that goes around the back of your neck is a thicker cableIt is very nicely paddedSo it feels very comfortable on your neckBut over time, especially if you're sweatyYou're gonna find this to be a little irritating to be against your skinAt least I didNow each ribbon does have an indicator of what's left and rightBut the easiest way to understand this is that the remote controller is supposed to be on your leftNow when it comes to pairing these to your iPhone, it couldn't be simplerAll you have to do is turn them on by pressing the power buttonYou have to tap and hold until this boots upThen you'll see the pop up appearAnd all you have to do is agree to itSo once you're paired, you're good to goYou can start using your headphones right awayOf course the great thing here is that we do get a battery indicator within the battery widgetSo the battery indicator tells us what the charge status is of the headphonesAnd how much charge we have remainingIncidentally the icon itself also reflects the Beats designWhich is kind of a nice touchAnd of course just like other W1 devicesOnce you pair these headphones to one deviceThey're synced to all of your devices via iCloudSo you don't have to repeat this againNow unlike AirPodsThese do not have proximity sensors within the earphonesSo when you take them in and out they don't automatically pause playbackOr disconnect or power offYou actually have to tap and hold the power button to turn them offOr switch to another audio sourceNow pairing this to other devices is pretty simpleAll you have to do is enter pairing modeBy tapping and holding the power button until it starts blinking whiteAnd then you can go to your bluetooth settingsAnd find the device you want to connectSo when it comes to using these, they're actually very comfortableIt does take a minute to figure out how you want to lay this wire across your neckOnce you get it in the right placeThese weights sort of keep it in placeAnd also make sure the wires aren't rubbing against your shirtWhich transmits a lot of noise into the headphonesAnd I will say for meThat I definitely need these wingsFor the headphonesOtherwise they just sort of fall outPretty easilyEspecially with the weights of the of the wiresSo if you're moving this around a lotAnd you don't use these wingsTo sort of brace them into your earThey just pop out, easilyNow if your wondering the biggest advantages of these headphonesIs the inline remote control and microphoneThe feature that is missing from the AirPodsSo of course with the AirPodsYou have to use that tap featureWhich I've never likedIt doesn't work reliablyAnd it's very limitedIt's either bringing up SiriOr answering the phone callOr you can program it to do other thingsLike pausing musicBut for the most part this is a traditional controllerYou have volume up, volume downAnd your shoulder controlsThe single click, triple click and etcSo all of that is thereEverything you're used to having is thereUh, but of courseYou have all these wires hanging aroundWhich the AirPods eliminateBut of course the biggest issue with AirPodsIs that they're not sound isolatingSo you can hear everything around youWhich is useful in some situationsYou don't want to be completely blocked outSo you can hear people talking to you or whateverUh, but this is definitely better for sound qualitySo if you want to enjoy your musicThese are the ones to takeAnd if you're gonna cut the grass orVacuum or whatever you're gonna doThat is noisy and you want to be able to hear your musicOr talk to somebody or whateverThese are the ones you wantAnother really nice touch to these headphonesIs that they're magneticSo they do snap together and stay togetherSo when they're around your neckThey sort of act as a loop that prevents them from being pulled offIt also keeps everything nice and tidySo they're not swinging aroundAnd wont swing across your shoulderAnd then just fall offSo it's kind of a nice way of keeping them in placeWhile having them at the readySo you can put them back in your earWhen you want to use themWell there's a whole vocabularyTo communicating what headphones sound likeBut since I don't really do headphones reviewsFor the most partAll I can say is that they do sound very clear and crispThey sound surprisingly openFor in ear style of headphonesAnd they do have a warmthOr richness to themSo they do have that bassThat a lot of people expectOut of the Beats productsBut they're by no means overwhelmingSo I'm pretty impressed overall with the sound profileAnd they're definitely not what I expected from Beats headphonesYou get that punch when you need itBut it doesn't drown out everything elseSo when it comes to battery lifeOn the full charge they last about 8 hoursWhich is better than the 5 hoursOr less than thatI was actually getting with the AirPodsBut of course the AirPods have a charging caseWhich means you can extend battery life considerablyBeyond 8 hoursBut personally, I think I prefer the 8 hoursOf uninterrupted listening timeAs opposed to having to recharge them everyFour or five hoursSo in the end, I really like these headphonesI can definitely highly recommend theseTheir fit is comfortableThey sound fantasticThe design is cleverAnd are easy to useEspecially with iOS and macOS devicesSo although these are much bulkierAnd not quite as slick as the AirPodsI definitely prefer them for sound qualityAnd their overall robustness and ease of useAlright guysHope
