**A Closer Look at Nothing's First Phone: The Nothing Phone 1**
My only gripe about this phone right now unless you really want to like spec hunt and be hyper specific and critical of the mid-range specs that you are given but again, the price point and the specs that are offered it's really not that bad. The specs are mid-range, but the performance has been so far from that so far I've really had no issues when using this device and again, I use my phone for basic phone things of these days - you know like browsing Twitter answering emails watching YouTube and TikTok videos just basic 21st century phone-related things. You know, I really don't spend a lot of time making phone calls, and so you know that's kind of why I am a little bit more critical of the back being a phone call and notification specific feature when in reality, I don't get a lot of phone calls these days.
So, i think the good performance has a lot to do with nothing OS which is a skin over Android 12. It's very basic with a few custom settings and features that fit the overall theme of nothing's aesthetic and its design language. Everything from the font and widgets down to a few custom functional features like at the top here when you drop down the notification shade, and you see some quick toggles, you can actually swipe this top left toggle to have even more options. And there's also an interesting Tesla integration that would in theory allow users to have a Tesla control specifically at the top of the quick toggle dropdown menu but unfortunately, this feature is still an experimental feature, and it's actually not working properly at the moment for me.
**Display**
This display is fantastic - it's a 6.55-inch OLED screen with HDR 10+ and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. There's a little hole punch camera off to the left side with slim and uniform bezels all the way around the device, and it's not curved which is just an underrated thing about phones these days. I'm not a fan of curved displays; I think they just don't lead to a good experience when holding it in the hand, and overall, I think the nothing phone one feels great in the hands - it's actually incredibly lightweight thanks to the materials used but still feels very premium in the hands.
**Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor**
And there's an under-display fingerprint sensor here which i don't know over the last few phones that I've used, it just hasn't been a very fun experience. It's been uh pretty slow at times from other fingerprint sensors that are under the display or it's just not accurate and I'm actually happy to report that while it's been a short amount of time, I've been very impressed - it's been quick enough, it's been very accurate so far so good with this phone.
**Camera**
i didn't get a whole lot of testing done with the cameras but for what you're paying for, i do think that they've been pretty good. There are two 50-megapixel cameras one ultra-wide and one standard wide-angle lens. I'll take some more photos throughout the week if you guys are interested in seeing a direct comparison between the nothing phone one and the iPhone 13 Pro if you are let me know in the comments down below but i think from the photos that you're seeing here, there are a couple of uh portrait mode photos sprinkled in as well.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is a brand new phone from a relatively new company called nothing the phone is the nothing phone one and in a world of smartphones that seemingly all just kind of blend together these days the nothing phone one does actually stand out quite a bit i've only had this phone for a very very short period of time but i've spent that time testing it out as much as i could and i have to say for those who are interested in a new mid-range android phone this has to be the best option out there and honestly we could just kind of throw out the word mid-range because it performs very well and it has a lot of high-end features so let's just say you're interested in a new phone maybe you're thinking about switching from an iphone for those of you who regularly watch this channel you might not be interested in doing that but for those of you who are new here welcome and again for those who might be looking to switch from an iphone to something else i hope my first impressions can help you make a clearer decision and honestly if you were looking to maybe switch from your iphone to something else this will no doubt give you that new fresh feeling that you might be looking for while also being sort of familiar i don't think it's a secret here that nothing definitely borrowed some design elements from an iphone i mean the placement of the buttons the style of this aluminum frame with its squared off edges even the way it feels in the hand the antenna bands etc and although the back of this phone is definitely the most unique part about it even the camera placement again i guess before the iphone 13 even the cameras they just kind of all look and resemble like an iphone and that's not a bad thing either it honestly took some of the best parts about the iphone's design and then improved upon them while also just being incredibly unique with this led glyph back so let's just jump right into that back shall we this is definitely one of the coolest things that i've seen in a smartphone and it does offer some actual functionality beyond just looking cool and being unique notifications and incoming calls can be customized and set to different glyph patterns that are built into the os and there's also custom sounds that kind of go along with it so that you know what type of notification is incoming or who's calling you without having to flip your phone over and interact with the display there are tons of really cool sound options to choose from and the light show that it puts on it's still really fun to mess around with it hasn't lost its luster by any means but with that said i do really think that while i like this idea it's going to be hard to take advantage of that functionality and make it useful for those who aren't just used to doing something like this and so if you decide to set custom options for different contacts and for different notifications it's going to take some work for you to get used to what exactly you set what glyph you set for your contacts what glyph you set for notifications and so you know i don't know if that's going to end up being useful for most people out there where i think things could get easier and i'm not sure if this is possible to do in the future with a software update is to add different colors to the glyphs i'm guessing that's not possible right now but you could set red for gmail green for messages blue for twitter and if you could do that you would know based off of the color that you set what exactly is going on on the back of your phone otherwise it would just make more sense to keep your phone up and then tap it whenever a notification comes in and see from the display exactly what you have there are a few glyph features for the camera that are a little bit useful and you can be toggling them on in the camera settings like having a fill light for photos maybe of darker subjects which seems like a better alternative than using the flash on your phone and there's also a really cool red light that can indicate when you're recording video again i don't know how many times i'm going to say this but i do think the glyph back is one of the coolest parts of this phone and one of the most unique things i've seen on a smartphone but it also could be a large part of the criticism right now based off of its current functionality that might be my only gripe about this phone right now unless you really want to like spec hunt and be hyper specific and critical of the mid-range specs that you are given but again the price point and the specs that are offered it's really not that bad the specs are mid-range but the performance has been so far from that so far i've really had no issues when using this device and again i use my phone for basic phone has been pretty good and definitely suitable for those who are looking at picking up this phone now speaking of the price this phone currently comes in at 399 pounds for the 8 gigabyte of ram gigs of internal storage base model there's also another 8 gig 256 model or you can bump the ram up to 12 gigs sticking with 256 for internal storage it's not yet available in the us but hopefully they should be clearing all of that up soon and could be coming to a carrier near you with that same mid-range price point but offering really good specs and high-end features that you just don't get in other phones at this price point it's unique enough and more than capable of being someone's primary phone for a long time and that would be hard to not recommend checking out if you're interested in a device like this one of course i would love to know your thoughts in the comments down below what you think of nothing's first phone the nothing phone one go ahead and let me know what you think about
