**My Thoughts on Lady Midnight by Julia Kellerman**
Like Emma wasn't there, quote to save her, he would kill everyone else in the vicinity, he wouldn't think twice until it was over, when he's washed the blood down the drain of the sink like scarlet paint and he would not regret it (page 466). Another quote, "It was the sort of love few people could understand. It was total and it was overwhelming and it could be cruel." He would destroy a whole city if he thought that this city posed some threat to his family (page 66).
These quotes are just terrifying to me. I wouldn't define love as willingness to kill other people for someone or willingness to die for someone, or if someone were to die that you would also die like I feel like it's not healthy and Julian even says that in the book when he's talking to Mark after Emma has been whipped. He straight up says that he knows that the way he feels isn't healthy but he can't help but feel that way (like props for self-awareness, but also that's kind of horrifying).
Then the part that really got to me, which I completely guessed from the minute they told you that Julian had some secret, is the scene where Julian takes her to his studio and shows her his studio full of his like paintings of her. First of all, it was so completely predictable. Second of all, I honestly wanted to like scream and throw my book across the room, like "this is an episode of Criminal Minds" (and again, I know I'm probably going to get some hate for this because I know so many people love Julian but he freaks me out).
Like he's terrifying and he's obsessed with her. I feel like Emma deserves better. She's a great female character and she doesn't deserve a guy who's going to keep a bunch of paintings of her in his secret back room, like that's weird. It's really, really weird.
Honestly, this may be kind of a stretch for some people, but personally, I see the parallels clearly between Edward Cullen and Julian. They have a lot of similarities in the way they view their female love interests, but Bella and Emma are nothing alike. That's the only thing that makes this relationship slightly better to me.
That's the only thing that makes this relationship slightly okay to me, but he's so creepy I just can't like him again. Sorry if you like him; I mean, you have every right to like him of course, but I couldn't like him in any way.
Overall, I gave this book 3.5 out of five stars and that is very much because of their romance. Like I said many times, their Ro romance was really problematic for me and it really did bring the book down a lot.
But that being said, there were still obviously things that I really loved about the book, and those are definitely going to keep me reading on in the series.
So, that's it guys, for pretty much all of my thoughts on Lady Midnight. There are probably several things that I forgot to mention in here that I will probably remember while I'm editing this video but that's bound to happen because it always happens with every video I make.
So, let me know all of your thoughts and feelings, and everything good or bad on Lady Midnight, either down in the comments below, or you can follow me on any of my social media. Tweet me, send me an ask on Tumblr, or talk to me on Instagram, whatever.
And, please, someone please tell me if I'm the only one who feels this way about Julian because I feel like I couldn't be; I feel like there has to be someone else out there who somewhat agrees with me not everyone is bound to like him and I feel kind of alone right now.
But yeah, just let me know. Let me know your overall thoughts on the characters and the plot and everything. So, thank you guys so much for watching this video; I hope you enjoyed, and I will see you in my next video. Bye!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys it's Hannah and today we are going to be discussing all things spoilery in the newest installment in the shadow Hunter Chronicles lady midnight by Cassandra CLA so if you guys haven't read lady midnight and you don't want to be spoiled for anything then I have a spoiler-free review that I've already filmed and uploaded that you can go check out and I will leave linked on the screen so if you don't want to be spoiled for anything that happens in lady midnight then I highly recommend you go and watch that video but if you have red lady midnight and you want to discuss all things spoilery and hear all of my thoughts then you can stay tuned for this video because that is exactly what we are going to be doing so lady midnight I'm going to spare you guys on the synopsis and the plot and everything because you've all already read it so you all already know what happened and we're just going to dive right into all of my thoughts and feelings that I have about this book so I've been reading the shadow Hunter books since I was in like sixth or seventh grade so 11 12 years old and I'm currently 19 so it's been a long time that I've been in this world and been reading about this world and I've been waiting for this book to come out for three years ever since Cassandra CLA announced that she would be writing another Mortal Instruments book another series within the same world I was actually kind of hesitant at first because I thought that I wasn't going to like it cuz she's just going to continue on with the same world and I wanted something kind of different but then I just decided that you know what I love the shadow Hunter world so I don't really care I'll probably read anything that is written in that world which is exactly why I was so excited to pick this book up so going into this book I didn't really have high expectations I really didn't have many expectations what I really expected was a shadow Hunter book and for those of you who've read other Shadow Hunter books you probably hopefully know what I mean there's just this vibe that shadow Hunter books have and they're all I wouldn't say the same as in the plots are all the same but you just know the world you're in and it's kind of comfortable in some weird way but that's pretty much what I was expecting out of this and that is pretty much exactly what I got so in my spoiler-free discussion I went through a pro and con list and that's essentially what I'm going to do in this video except this time with all the spoilers I'm also not going to hold this up the entire time because it's so heavy and it's killing my hand so starting with my Pros the things that I really really loved about this book first of all I really liked Emma Emma was a great protagonist I thought that she was really interesting she was very strong without being The Stereotype of strong female character even though she was physically strong she was still emotionally vulnerable she was willing to let people see that sight of her and she didn't care and even though she was a bit Revenge driven trying to figure out who it was who killed her parents it didn't consume her she didn't let that consume her every waking thought and moment and decision she was still very thoughtful of the world around her and I really liked that about her I thought that she was a great female character and a great protagonist that being said that was kind of just like the first half of the book maybe the first 34s of the book and in the last quarter she started making some decisions that I don't know to me were a bit out of character and just seemed kind of stupid like once her relationship with Julian started to develop a little bit more and she became like more entrenched in that whole romance thing then she started making some dumb choices like not telling Julian about the parabe bond and why they can't be together and deciding to go and pretend to be in love with Mark instead in order to hurt him so he falls out of love with her and I'll get into that whole thing later but that decision really pissed me off and to me felt kind of out of character for what we saw of Emma in the rest of the book I also really really loved the Blackthorn siblings minus Julian and I know a lot of people are probably going to hate me for that because a lot of people like Julian but personally I don't which I will get into that later once we go into my con but the rest of the Blackthorn siblings I absolutely loved them I thought each of them had their own personality each of them was useful each of them had a purpose in the story which I thought was really really special and not something that you see a lot of the time so I was really really happy about that and I loved all of them and I'm really really excited to see how they develop and grow in the rest of the series another character that I absolutely loved was Christina it was fantastic to see a PC female character who was still one of the main characters and she was so useful and she had such an important role and she was so supportive of Emma and their relationship was really important to me Christina was just really strong and really interesting and I just loved her I thought that she was probably one of Cassie's best written characters I don't know if that's just me I just absolutely thought that she was wonderful and helpful and unique and she wasn't really like any of the other characters but she still was productive and she was still strong and she was still vulnerable and human she felt very very human and very realistic compared to a lot of other characters in just all of the Shadow Hunter books in general another character actually another couple that has absolutely stolen my heart is Kieran and Mark when that whole thing was revealed when Christina and Mark are talking outside of the Institute and then Kieran shows up and then Mark tells SE to go back inside and she comes back out and she sees the two of them making out against a tree my JW was on the floor because I was not expecting that but I was so goddamn happy that it happened it was so good it was so good honestly like I can't explain to you what I did when that happened because my jaw was literally on the floor like I closed my book and I was flipping out and I reread the scene like four times because I was so excited about it and then from that point on I was shipping them so hard I loved their relationship I loved their backstory those like six pages where you got like Mark and kieran's backstory were better than the first 290 pages of the book honestly they were so perfect and they make me so happy and I'm so so devastated by their goodbye scene that scene like tore my heart apart but I have faith and I am really excited to see where it goes from there so I'm really really hoping that they end up together but I'm also just really happy with what we got in this book so they were just wonderful and they Honestly made this book for me their relationship their little subplot their story was just so good and so intriguing and I'm just going to say 5 million times better than Julian and Emma also can I say how fantastic it was to to have another bisexual character I don't ship Christina and Mark like that's not a thing that I want to happen at all but I am really happy that we have like a canonically by character in this series as well and I'm hoping that we get more lgbtq plus characters in the series I think that we will be if I'm not wrong I think Cassie Claire has mentioned something about that so hopefully we will be but I am very happy about Mark and I just love Mark's character in general he's just wonderful and funny and I love him another thing I absolutely loved about this book was the plot and the plot twists I really loved how they were trying to piece together these murders trying to figure out who it is who's performing these rituals what is the ritual what's the whole purpose and then when it's revealed that this entire time it has been Malcolm and you just feel this betrayal especially because you first meet him in City of Heavenly Fire And if you've read that then you see him there and you see him as like a good character and then suddenly in this book like three quarters of the way through you suddenly find out that he's the villain that everyone has been after and oh my God my mind was blown there were definitely Clues there that I should have seen But I absolutely didn't see and I was just so completely shocked when you found out that it was Malcolm I felt betrayed I was heartbroken but at the same time I loved it I also loved his whole motive his whole motive of trying to bring back the person that he loved I really liked the central theme of Love in This Not Just romantic love but also familial love I thought that he had a really cool motive as a villain I thought it made him a lot more interesting than Valentine personally I have this Theory though that he's not dead because I am very much the type of person who will not believe that a character is dead unless you see the body like I never trust anyone unless I see the body even then Sometimes they come back to life so I don't think he's dead I'm calling that right now even though his spell stopped I think something else was happening there there's no way unless you see the body they're never dead so call in that right now also the moment you find out that Tavi is missing and Malcolm has him right after you find out that Malcolm is who they've been looking for this entire time my heart sank because I thought it was going to be like Max 2.0 and I was going to start balling because you cannot you can not hurt the poor children I've had enough of that in Cassie's books and I don't want any more of it so I was really happy when he ended up okay but I was terrified that something was going to happen to him oh and another Pro that I completely forgot to mention that made me super happy while reading this book was the moment when you found out that kit was a herend Dale I screamed that plot twist was so unbelievable and I was so excited because William har Andale is probably my favorite character in all of the Shadow Hunter books next to Magnus but oh my God when we found out that there was another herend Dale I was so excited and I can't wait for them to develop that more because I want more her andales I will always want more hair andales so that kind of covers my main Pros for this book like I said it's mostly just the characters that I really enjoyed and I thought were Dynamic and really interesting and also the plot and the plot twists I really like where the plot is going so I am really excited to see how it develops in the other books so that's definitely something that's keeping me reading and probably the thing I enjoyed most from this book so now getting into my Cons with this book I really do have more Pros than cons but it's just one con that kind of encompasses everything and really brought this book down for me and that is the relationship between Julian and Emma so don't get me wrong I really like that they're exploring the Romantic side of the parab relationship whether or not it's okay for them to be in love how that all works and I like when you find out why they can't be together and why the clave has laws against it and all that I found that really interesting and I thought that it was very interesting that she decided to explore that side of it because it's not something we get in any of the other books but I would have liked it a lot more if I had liked Julian like I said before I absolutely loved Emma's character especially for the first 34s of the book I thought she was really interesting really Dynamic really strong and just a really good female protagonist but then once the romance with Julian started developing both of them got significantly less quotes in my notes that just didn't sit well with me and really Disturbed me because they were so uncomfortable and I couldn't deal with them and I'm going to read some of them for you now quote the thought of his big brother being naked in Emma's room didn't sit well with him even if Emma wasn't there quote to save her he would kill everyone else in the vicinity he wouldn't think twice until it his Studio full of his like paintings of her first of all it was so completely predictable second of all I honestly wanted to like scream and throw my book across the room like I know a lot of people read that scene and they were like oh this is really cute oh this is really romantic I am not one of those people and when I read that scene the first thing that came to my mind was this is an episode of Criminal Minds and again I know I'm probably going to get some hate for this because I know so many people love Julian but he freaks me out like he's terrifying and he's obsessed with her and I feel like Emma deserves better she's a great female character and she doesn't deserve a guy who's going to keep a bunch of paintings of her in his secret back room like that's weird it's weird am I the only one who thinks that it's weird because it's really really weird like honestly this may be kind of a stretch for some people but personally I see the parallels clearly Edward Cullen and Julian have a lot of similarities in the way that they view their female love interests but Bella and Emma are nothing alike so that's the only thing that makes this relationship a little bit better to me is the fact that Emma isn't passive and she isn't like a weak character in the way that Bella can be so that's the only thing that makes this relationship slightly okay to me but he's so creepy I just I can't I can't like him again sorry if you like him I mean you have every right to like him of course but I can't like him I can't like him in any way so that pretty much covers all of my cons for this book which is essentially just Julian and his problematic ways so overall I gave this book a 3.5 out of five stars and that is very much because of this romance like I said many times their Ro romance was really problematic for me and it really did bring the book down a lot but that being said there were still obviously things that I really loved about the book and that are definitely going to keep me reading on in the series so that is it guys for pretty much all of my thoughts on lady midnight there are probably several things that I forgot to mention in here that I will probably remember
