Welcome to HTV Handmade: Clearing Clutter with a DIY Home Organizer
Hey everyone, welcome back to HTV handmade! I'm Meg, and like many of you, organization is a constant battle, especially in the entryway of our homes. It's often clogged up with papers, mail, keys, sunglasses - not exactly the most cute space. But today, we're going to make a DIY home organizer that will help clear out the clutter, and it's also a great place to leave a sweet little love note or friendly reminder.
Our First Step: Cutting the Wood
The first thing we're going to do is cut our wood. You'll need to measure up from the base of your organizer, mark at 12 inches and 17 inches, and draw a line across the 17-inch mark. Then, you'll score your wood by cutting a few starter cuts with your saw. Next, carefully cut across your line using your saw, wearing protective gloves for safety. Don't worry if it's not perfect - we can sand down the edges later.
Marking and Cutting the Center
Once you've scored your wood, locate and mark the center of your organizer. Then, connect that center mark with your 12-inch mark using a ruler and pencil. Finally, cut across your line with your saw, making sure to follow your measurements carefully. Remember, it's all about precision here.
Sanding Down the Edges
Now that we've cut our wood, it's time to sand down the edges until they're nice and smooth. This will help create a clean finish for our organizer. Take your time and be patient - it's worth the extra effort.
Adding Paint and Sealant
Next, add painters tape across your 12-inch marks and press down to seal. Then, paint your organizer with white or the color of your choice, allowing it to dry completely before adding a second coat. Once that paint is fully dry, remove the tape by pulling it towards the paint.
Adding Roof Details
Now we're going to add some roof details to our organizer. Take your drill and add in a drill bit that's 3/8 of an inch - this will help create a chimney effect on our roof. Make sure your drill line is totally perpendicular with the side of the house, not too deep just a quarter of an inch.
Adding Nails for Support
Add some nails on either side of your house by gently tapping them in with a hammer. This will provide support and stability to your organizer.
Adding Hooks and Clothes Pins
Next, add hooks along the base by tapping them in and then screwing them in by hand. You can also clip on some papers just by gluing these cute little clothes pins along the base as well - perfect for hanging mail or keys.
Adding a Saw Tooth and Hanging it Up
Finally, add a saw tooth to the back of your organizer and hang it up with two small nails. And voila! You've just cleared the clutter in your modern house organizer. It's time to put it to use and keep your entryway tidy.
Will Your Home Need More Organization?
There are likely other spots in your home that need help with organization - maybe a closet, or a kitchen countertop. Don't worry if you don't know where to start - this DIY project might just spark some inspiration for you. Let me know in the comments below if there's an area of your home that needs more TLC.
