Snapdragon 810 Revealed, LG G Flex 2, and Sony E-Ink Smart Watch - Android Weekly
The Next Gen: Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 and the Future of Technology
In the past, I've enjoyed talking about next gen technology in the years to come, like digitized clothing and mysterious virtual reality. But what about the next gen just right around the corner? Well, we're here to talk about that now. Qualcomm has issued developers a reference smartphone and tablet that demonstrates the capability of their new Snapdragon 810.
The Snapdragon 810 developer per smartphone is a behemoth packing a 2560 x 600 display, which is quite impressive. It also comes with 4 GB of RAM and a 3,200 mAh battery, which should be more than enough for most users. But what's really exciting is the camera setup, which features a 13 megapixel dual flash rear camera and a 4 megapixel front-facing camera capable of 1080p, 120 frames per second recording. The handset also has a fingerprint scanner on the back and a huge array of sensors, including 8 megaphones, a micro HDMI slot that supports 4K displays, and an ultra sound emitter.
But wait, there's more! Qualcomm's reference tablet is also nothing to sneeze at. It features a 10.1 inch UHD 4K display with a whopping 3840 x 2160 aspect ratio, which is quite impressive. The tablet also has 4 GB of RAM and a decent sized 7,000 mAh battery, similar to the smartphone. And just like the smartphone, it has a fingerprint scanner on the back and a range of sensors, including dual 3D gesture cameras and front-facing stereo speakers.
Now, before you get too excited, let's remind you that these are reference devices for developers only. They're not for users yet, but they allow developers to create applications to see what this great Snapdragon 810 is capable of. For those who are big fans of the LG G Flex, there's some good news on the horizon. The G Flex 2 is expected to launch at CES in January 2015, and according to persons close to the matter, it will be a major upgrade over its predecessor.
The G Flex 2 is said to feature a high-resolution plastic-based OLED screen with full HD resolution, likely in a smaller form factor than its predecessor. The self-healing coating will make a return on the LG G Flex 2 in an improved form, which should be interesting for those who prefer one-handed devices. Some people have said that because the device curves a little bit, it's easier to use with one hand on a larger screen.
But what about smartwatches? Sony has been known for its well-designed sleek-looking devices, and now they're coming up with a smartwatch that uses e-ink technology. A spokesperson from Sony confirmed that the company is working on a project named fashion entertainment, which is researching potential electronic paper or e-ink application for fashion products.
The FES watch is the group's major prototype at the moment, which uses electronic paper to change the entire watch design based on input gestures. Currently, the watch comes with 24 different user selectable patterns, but it's unclear how they'll be displayed on the watch face. The project was kept under wraps and pushed through crowdfunding to gauge initial interest without attaching the Sony brand name.
But here's the interesting part: the FES watch passed its fundraising goal of 2 million yen or $177,000 USD in just three weeks, and it has already secured 3.5 million yen. Now, Sony claims that they see applications for e-ink not just on watches but on all of their clothing further deepening and making far more interesting the wearable race.
And finally, we have Samsung, which knows one thing: if you really want to commit to something, you've got to put a ring on it. Speaking of rings, Samsung has filed a new patent application that potentially gives us a glimpse of what might end up being one of their new upcoming smartwatches. What makes this particular patent so interesting is that it shows a round watch operated by a ring around the face.
The innovation in this patent is displaying a daily agenda on a circular interface divided into slices, rotating the ring is just one of the proposed ways to edit entries from that agenda. It's not clear how this will work in practice, but it's certainly an interesting concept. And that's all for now folks!
