Porsche 718 Boxster vs Z06 - Race To Palm Springs

The Thrill of the Desert: A 718 Boxster Review

As I settled into the driver's seat of my 718 Boxster, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and trepidation. The desert landscape stretched out before me like an endless expanse of sand and rock, with hilly mountains rising up in the distance. My mission was to put this car through its paces on some of the most challenging roads I could find, and I was determined to see how it would perform.

The first thing that struck me about this car was its wind resistance. With the roof down, the cabin felt like a pressure cooker, with the air rushing in from all sides. The wind whipped through my hair as I accelerated out of the starting gate, feeling the 718 Boxster's rear tires hug the road as we picked up speed. I couldn't help but think about the similarities between this car and its predecessor, the 911 GT3. Both were designed for performance and handling, with a focus on agility and precision.

As we bombed down the winding roads, I was struck by the 718 Boxster's ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Whether it was a tight hairpin turn or a long stretch of straight road, this car seemed to respond eagerly to every input from the driver. The suspension was firm but not unyielding, providing a comfortable ride without sacrificing any of the car's agility.

But as we approached our first major challenge - a steep hill with a treacherous descent on the other side - I couldn't shake the feeling that this car might be in over its head. Would it have enough grunt to make it up the hill, or would it struggle to maintain traction on the slippery surface? I pushed the 718 Boxster to its limits, feeling the car's tires squeal and protest as we climbed higher.

And then, suddenly, we were at the top of the hill, perched precariously on the edge of a precipice. For a moment, there was nothing but silence - no sound except for the steady thrum of the engine and the rush of wind through the cabin. And then, without warning, my competitor appeared out of nowhere, careening up the hill with a speed that left me in his dust.

I laughed out loud, feeling a surge of excitement and exhilaration. This was what it meant to drive a Boxster - to push the car to its limits, to test its mettle against the toughest challenges, and to come out on top. And as I caught up with my competitor on the next straight section of road, I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at having given it my all.

After that heart-stopping moment, we were back on public roads, with the familiar rhythms of traffic life reasserting themselves. But even then, I couldn't shake the feeling that this car had some special something - that it was more than just a Boxster, but an extension of its driver's own desires and motivations.

And as I finally pulled into our hotel parking lot, feeling a sense of relief wash over me after hours of high-speed thrills, I knew that I would never forget this drive. The 718 Boxster had proven itself to be a formidable opponent, one that was equal parts fierce and beautiful. And as I climbed out of the driver's seat, stretching my arms and shaking off the adrenaline rush, I couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring.

The 718 Boxster: A Chassis-Handling Masterclass

As I pulled into our hotel parking lot, exhausted from a day of high-speed driving, I knew that it was time to talk about one of the most intriguing aspects of this car - its chassis and handling. The Boxster is often seen as a more laid-back sibling of the 911, but beneath its relaxed exterior lies a formidable chassis that's capable of delivering incredible performance.

For me, the moment when I felt the true potential of this car was on that winding desert road, where I had to push it hard to keep up with my competitor. It was there that I realized just how effective the 718 Boxster's suspension is - both in providing a comfortable ride and allowing the driver to connect deeply with the road. The steering was light but direct, with a subtle give that hinted at a deeper level of sophistication beneath.

And then there's the matter of power - a topic that always brings out the enthusiasts in me. The 718 Boxster may not have as much grunt as some of its rivals, but it has something that they can't: agility and handling that truly sets it apart. Whether I was carving through corners or accelerating up steep inclines, this car seemed to respond eagerly to every input from the driver.

Of course, there's no denying that one of the main factors in a Boxster's appeal is its relationship with the road - and in some ways, this 718 Boxster is one of the most rewarding cars I've ever driven. Whether it was the rush of adrenaline as we took on those desert hills or the peaceful silence of our return journey, every moment felt like an extension of my own desires.

But let's not forget that there's more to a car than just its driving dynamics - sometimes, it's the little things that make all the difference. For me, one of the standout features of this 718 Boxster was its build quality - every piece of trim and hardware seemed meticulously crafted, with an attention to detail that I've rarely seen elsewhere.

And then there's the matter of noise levels - some might say that a Boxster is too loud, but for my money, it's all part of its charm. The sound of this car accelerating from 0-60 in under 4 seconds is one that never gets old.

What Will Tomorrow Bring?

As I stood outside the hotel, feeling a sense of relaxation wash over me after hours of high-speed driving, I couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring. Would we be back out on those winding desert roads again, or perhaps something entirely different? Whatever it was, one thing was certain: this car had already won me over.

The 718 Boxster is a masterclass in chassis handling, with a blend of power and agility that's simply unmatched by any other car I've driven. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or just someone who loves the thrill of driving, this car has something for everyone - and if I'm being honest, it's already made me pretty sure about what I'll be doing tomorrow.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello one and all welcome to scene through glass today Paul Wallace and I are transferring from LA to Palm Springs for the launch event of the brand new mellin Pilot Sport 4S tires rather than jumping in the very kindly provided melin transport van we thought we' just something a little bit more exciting so we got in touch with the guys at churro which essentially Airbnb for cars and managed to get hold of two incredibly cool cars Paul has rented this red Corvette Z6 which he is stupidly excited about and I am in a brand new 718 Porsche Boxer s a car that I've never experienced before I'm excited for you on that we are going to be going head-to-head it is a very street legal race from here in LA on the Holland drive to Palm Springs for the event whoever gets their first will have first pick of their Supercar for one of the mitchellan drives tomorrow so yeah we are we are tough losers and we both have an idea of cars that we like and don't like that are involved the Mitchell in events this is going to be my most competitive race ever street legal race ever street legal race ever so there's nothing more to do but jump in to our two churro cars and get going oh what's going on see okay honestly there go no's out of the right now I have a master plan so when we decided we were going to do a challenge a head-to-head challenge for oh hold on SEC I've got an opportunity here I've got an opportunity I've had him I've had him in the lights and I'm now in the lead m so yes the reason I am in a 718 box to S is not just because we are in LA and I want to enjoy this lovely weather but it is because you probably already know this car is turbocharged so fuel economy I am hoping or I am thinking that I might have the upper hand overpull when it comes to fuel economy for this trick because I did the LA to Palm Springs journey in a convertible Z06 at the end of last year and I was miserable I got stuck in really bad traffic the whole car overheated I was stopping Perpetual every 2 seconds and I knew that Paul was going to choose that car I just I knew it so I thought how can I one up him I will go in a bit of European luxury in a brand new car I have not yet driven and one that I think will get me to Palm Springs first maybe not the quickest but first so we both started this race with around half a t of fuel I think Paul said his uh range was around 90 Mi mine's already reading 135 which is the exact distance to Palm Springs and I'm hoping I'll be able to eat that out over time so I'm quietly confident a little nervous cuz let's not forget he has got 650 horsepower in that stupidly red car but I've got German engineering on my side a very quick box to S and all this beautiful weather to enjoy so today is going to be a very good day okay turning on to our first freeway of the day infamously awful for traffic but things look like they're moving uh what's it say one car per green and I have beat Paul to the lights quickly Sport Plus and he's away this is a very good start to the challenge I'll be stand Ryan little I have to say it is so nice being in a convertible I'm really not a fan of soft tops but in La I guess you never have to put the top up actually apart from the first few days when we arrived when the weather was awful as you saw but the sun has come back to California and it is so good but the small issues I have is that I'm 6'2 and in most of these convertibles I'm Too Tall and so my head kind of pops up over the wind screen so sat quite sunken down low so that my hat doesn't blow off anyway still no sign of pull knowing him he will be in economy driving mode uh he's probably sussed out my thinking uh and I just know he loves economy driving anyway so he's clearly back there going a bit slowly but I assume at some point the competitiveness in him will come out and he'll decide that he needs to switch it into track mode and try and catch me up at which point I will see him he'll be the hair in the toris he'll fly by in some kind of American horsepower fieled rage and then I will simply re overtake him as he sits at a petrol station filling that gas guzzler up I'm pretty sure I can now see Paul finally can see Paul in my mirror he's been missing for ages I was like what can he be doing back there but yes oh no what do I do oh oh that's not po that's not pool it's completely different where on Earth is pul then getting a bit worried about him now now when PA and I were discussing uh the challenge last night we were looking at the various roots and there were two very obvious routes out of La towards Palm Springs that did eventually merge again about 20 mi outside of Palm Springs and we thought okay well they're basically the same thing we will both take a route each so that we aren't literally going the same way so even though I'm still ahead because unless he's done a shortcut already he definitely hasn't passed me yet I still think I'm going to stick to my original plan fuel saving and the alternate route even though it's like 3 minutes longer so unless he comes flying past me I am turning off just over 8 Miles and then I really won't know if he suddenly starts to put the power on that's what's quite worrying when I rejoin this road I'll have no idea if Paul is ahead or behind me right now I am very confident cuz God knows where he is he's either in a ditch or knowing cool he's gone the wrong way so Paul has just called me and he said that he was 43 miles away from our destination and I was 49 9 miles away when he rang so somehow he is ahead of me I'm literally hundreds of foot from rejoining the road that he was on and somehow he's got past me so I'm flicking oh if this truck doesn't kill me I'm straight into sport mode and we got some catching up to do now while so far there's been no rain one thing about the desert is it is very cold you've probably picked up on the fact that this cabin is extremely windy with the roof down we are going to talk about it briefly when I get more into a sort of 718 review but there's actually snow on a lot of these hilly mountains I feel like we're in the Alps rather than the bloody Californian desert last time I came here it was so dry and arid and baking hot and as I say I'm kind of freezing to death but I refuse to put the roof up on this car considering that I am in California and there is some blue sky so for now I'm just slowly becoming an ice cool uh we are bombing along this road I have still not seen po uh the problem with corveta there were so many in America that I keep seeing ones at some point on the road behind me in front of me and I'm like there he is and no it's not so I don't know where he is as I say when I got that phone call he was 7 miles ahead I do not know if he'd stopped for fuel or not cuz he must at some point on this journey need petrol I in the meantime am now at about 90 M range uh and we're only about 30 or 40 miles away so it's getting close it's getting close I can't really tell what's going to happen but for now I'm just enjoying these kind of breathtaking views I am so nearly at our destination and I have no idea where pool is but I think I'm about to stop caring because this right now is basically the reason I I rented this box dur rest this 718 box durest because I knew I'd have to go down this road as we arrived at our hotel I drove this road in a Z06 and thought it was one of the most Mega things ever and I'm so intriguing and excited to see what this little car is like on this road because at the end of the day this is what boxes is all about chassis and handling it's like a tunnel screw it I think I'm going to do that road again I don't really care if I won if I lost I'm in a bloody 7 to 18 box toess on an insanely good driving Road in California let's spin this thing around just the matter of what no no that's pull how do I turn around I can't believe it okay go okay stop stop stop I need to turn around I thought he'd be Milds ahead of me he must have stopped for fuel ah oh come on car now now is the test can the little 7 18 box to S take on the 650 horsepower Z6 ah through the corners surely look at this grip oh where is he though he's gone oh my God he's miles down there he must have flown down that hill and now it's just straight I remember how am I going to catch him what a thing though well done 718 now we're back on the big the big I have no idea if you can hear me I can see him but now we're back on the big public roads with uh well enforced speed limits not that we were breaking the speed limit then okay the speed limit is 55 I'm doing 57 I'm breaking the law guys doing it for a challenge I think we're both terrified of American cops there's a red light there's a red light and I going to yes okay we're just in front oh that thing is so mean in my rear view mirror it is all going to come down to traffic lights I'm in the oh no no no oh wait if I pick the wrong or the right lane oh how did he get a jump on me this is so tense yes brilliant he's going to he's edging it he's trying to Edge it he's trying to Edge it that is 2 milph over this speed limit I know all the way around three lanes across go he's just pegging me I did it a Oh what a beautiful beautiful place to end this drive it has been so much fun I cannot wait for tomorrow he's being all aggressive back there trying to frighten me off the it's not happening this is it we have arrived and I am here first somehow that was ridiculous I I generally think that was our best challenge yet yeah yeah it was unreal unreal two awesome cars to put head to-head and it just makes me even more excited for tomorrow and the stuff with I think it's going to be so so cool you you you get to pick the car I hope you guys enjoyed this give it a thumbs up if you have make sure to subscribe for plenty more videos to come this is a Ryan little productionhello one and all welcome to
