What is the Snapdragon 855 Plus..

The New Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus: A Different Approach to Flagship Announcements

Welcom just announced the Snapdragon 855 plus, and this is a little bit weird for Qualcomm because usually they just announce one flagship SOC a year, usually around December, and then it trickles in to high-end flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S ten plus. That still kind of holds true here, with the Snapdragon 855 plus not being exactly a new CPU, but rather using pretty much the same hardware as its predecessor.

The main difference between the standard variant and the overclocked version is that it's using the cryo 485 CPU, but it's actually overclocked to 22.96 gigahertz, which is a 4% improvement over the regular Snapdragon 855. This might not seem like a huge speed increase, but it's worth noting that this was specifically made for mobile gamers, so the real story is in the GPU.

Qualcomm did mention that the Torino 640 GPU is 15% faster than it was with any Snapdragon 855, which is a pretty big gap. However, they are not giving us exact numbers on how much of an improvement this will make in real-world gaming scenarios. The author is eager to test this out once they actually get a device that is using this chip so they can verify whether or not that's true.

It's also worth noting that popular mobile games like pub G mobile and 49 mobile are kept at 30 to 60 fps, with some games capped at 30 fps unless you have special phones like a Galaxy Note 9 or an iPhone. So, it's really going to take more advantage of the games that allow for higher frame rates, such as the OnePlus 7 Pro, which has a 90 Hertz display.

If games are actually able to take advantage of those higher frame rates, it would be really nice to be able to play a game in 90 FPS. The author believes that this 15% boost on the GPU is probably going to help with this. Additionally, welcome said that you can probably expect phones with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 5 + SOC launching in the second half of 2019.

This announcement does seem a bit unusual, as it's already July and we have been hearing rumors of devices like the Asus Rog Phone and Galaxy Note 10+, but we won't know for sure until these devices are actually released. Regardless, the same AI features that were present in the Snapdragon a 55 will still be present, along with the same x24 LTE modem and X 55 G modem.

So, is this chip actually going to make a difference? Will you play mobile games that can reach frame rates higher than 60 fps? We want to know! Let us know in the comments section below. For more information about this chip, we've also got an article on Android Authority with a little bit more detail.

We're also planning to go hardcore into testing and deep dives as soon as we get units in for review. We'll be putting this chip through its paces and seeing just how well it performs in real-world scenarios. Stay tuned for our review, where we'll be putting the Snapdragon 855 Plus through its paces and finding out if it's really worth the hype.
