LEGO Airplane Dogfight Kinetic Diorama!

The Pursuit of Flight: A Unique LEGO Set from JK Brickworks

JK Brickworks is a designer who has created a unique and fascinating LEGO set, "Pursuit of Flight". This set was submitted through the LEGO Ideas platform, where fans can submit their own creations for consideration to become official LEGO sets. The set was designed by Jason Allman and his partner, who also designed the iconic LEGO Sisyphus kinetic sculpture.

The set was officially reviewed and approved after surpassing 10,000 user votes on the LEGO Ideas platform. It has now been released through the BrickLink Designer Program, an invitational program where some of the submissions that were popular on LEGO Ideas have a second life as official sets. Users are voting with their dollars by pre-ordering the set, and the first designs to surpass 3,000 pre-orders will be turned into physical sets, limited to 10,000 units maximum.

The Pursuit of Flight set is a highly detailed and immersive creation that showcases JK Brickworks' exceptional design skills. The set includes 540 pieces and features a beautifully crafted platform with a miniature city and a system that allows the planes to move in a kinetic animation. The set also includes five different designs, each representing a different part of aviation history, including classic biplanes and triplanes.

The main animated platform is a work of art in itself, with a beautiful and intricate design that showcases the capabilities of LEGO bricks. The set includes a range of features, such as forced perspective, which creates a sense of depth and scale. The instructions are not printed out, but rather can be downloaded from the LEGO Building Instructions app, allowing users to build the model with their family or friends.

One of the standout features of the Pursuit of Flight set is its ability to be mixed and matched with different airplanes. Users can choose from a range of designs, including the Focker triplane, the Sopwith Camel, and others. The set also includes a number of interactive features, such as the ability to drag and maneuver the models around.

The Pursuit of Flight set is a must-have for any LEGO enthusiast who loves aviation or just wants to try something new. It's a challenging build that requires patience and skill, but the end result is well worth it. With its unique design, intricate details, and interactive features, this set is sure to be a hit with fans of all ages.

As we began building the Pursuit of Flight set, we were struck by the quality of the instructions and the precision of the pieces. The assembly process took around an hour and a half, which split evenly between the main platform and the smaller airplanes. The whole experience was enjoyable and engaging, with the only notable exception being a slight delay in fitting some of the parts together.

The final result is truly impressive, with each piece coming together to create a beautiful and intricate model. The set includes a range of features that showcase JK Brickworks' exceptional design skills, from the kinetic animation to the miniature city and forced perspective. It's clear that this set was designed by someone who loves LEGO and aviation, and it shows in every detail.

Overall, we were thoroughly impressed with the Pursuit of Flight set, and we're excited to see what other unique creations will emerge through the BrickLink Designer Program. With its unique design, intricate details, and interactive features, this set is sure to be a hit with fans of all ages. We highly recommend it to anyone who loves LEGO or aviation.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey everybody it's norm from tested and today i have a really delightful show and tell for you out there after a couple weeks of pretty intense hardware reviews and tech deep dives i thought it'd be fun to do a little bit of a reset with a lego set build yes it's been quite a while since we've done a lego set uh build here on the channel and this one is quite special it is the pursuit of flight designed by jk brickworks that's jason allman and his partner who also designed if you remember that lego sisyphus kinetic sculpture that piece of automata that adam built a couple years ago here on test in this was submitted through lego ideas uh that's uh the platform we've talked about before people can submit their my own creations their mocs and if they get enough user support uh surpassing 10 000 votes then lego will officially review them and some of those get approved to turn into official sets like you can buy at a lego store we've built many of those in the past but not all of them make it through and so lego through their bricklink website the marketplace for buying and selling individual lego pieces have now started a designer program invitational this is the bricklink designer program where some of the submissions that were popular on lego ideas have a second life have a new chance to actually get turned into sets and here users are voting with their dollars they're pre-ordering them and the first set number of units or designs to surpass 3 000 pre-orders get turned into physical sets up to 10 000 units maximum so these aren't ongoing productions they're not going to be in the actual lego store but through bricklink they are officially released in some capacity and this pursuit of flight set uh was one that was with the first round of the bricklink designer program i just received it this past week and we're gonna put it together together so let's turn on some soothing time lapse music i'm going to null out these pieces and we're going to see how this automata works okay so that assembly was so enjoyable the whole thing took about an hour and a half so maybe half hour worth of knolling highly recommended for these 540 pieces and then about an hour to put the whole thing together i'd say split evenly between this main animated platform as well as these five little airplanes includes five different designs all representing different parts of aviation history so this is clearly like a right flyer not exactly micro fake somewhere in between micro and mini-fig scale and then you have your classic biplane here and a triplane so very much like a german focker on the triplane and this one almost like a sopwith camel so very uh iconic airplanes um that you can then attach to the platform the platform itself um is it's a it's a beautiful sculpture too because not only do you have underneath here the system that allows the planes to be mounted and do the kinetic animation but on the top you also have a miniature city that gives you a little bit of forced perspective so houses roads trees and then even above them some clouds so you have the village the clouds and then we're gonna mount let's do the tri-plane and the biplane i'm gonna mount these two airplanes so a mounting point here and you can adjust the angle a little bit although i'm going to keep it be aimed as uh up as possible because i don't want it to droop like that so there you go maybe just push that connection a little better alright and here we go yeah look at that alternating movement so they're not exactly moving in parallel they're like chasing each other it's a really just fun approximation of a dog fight in lego form and that force perspective i think really really nails it it's the the base isn't just a bland thing it has a whole store going on with these planes flying above this little village you can of course mix and match the airplanes i don't know if i'd be putting the right flyer you know chasing a mustang or anything but uh lots of opportunity for fun the instructions are not printed out so somebody should note that in the box there is a card that tells you to go download the lego building instructions app so they're trying to get people to use that and the instructions are all 3d and animated so very interactive you can drag and maneuver the models around and then if you want to build this with your family you can you know each take a different airplane and load up that app and work together it's a really fast build really fun build and i'll be keeping an eye out on more of these bricklink designer program sets that i can support and back and get because i think they're nice unique entries into the pantheon of lego sets and all come from amazing fan designers like jk
