Welcome to Handmade with Me: Karen
Hello everybody, welcome back to my channel! I hope you're all doing well and staying safe. Today, we're going to tackle one of those projects that was super popular on Pinterest a while back – the rope rainbow decoration. Who remembers those? It's a fun project, but it can be a bit overwhelming because it requires a lot of materials that you might not have just lying around your house. So, when I saw people making mini versions of this project into earrings, I thought they were so cute and used way fewer supplies – which means you probably already have everything you need.
To get started, we'll need some thick white yarn. Don't worry if you don't have a ton of this because we only need four small pieces for each earring. You can also use any color yarn you like, but traditional rainbow colors are always a great choice. Next, we'll cut four pieces of thin wire – take one piece and push it into the center of the yarn. This is what's going to help the earrings hold their rainbow shape later.
Now that we have our basic structure set up, let's add some color. I'm using embroidery thread, which comes in a variety of colors. Take one of the colors you like and tie it onto the yarn, making sure that the wire is inside where you tied it, folded the end in, and cover it up as you wrap the string around the yarn. It's a good idea to have a ruler nearby so you can check your measurements and keep going until the wrapped portion measures 1 and 3/4 inches.
Once you've reached that measurement, cut off the string and tie the end in place. Poke down the yarn that's sticking out the end and use your wire cutters to trim any extra wire. Now, repeat this process three more times to get one piece in each color – but feel free to play with those measurements if you want yours to be a different size.
Now it's time to turn our little pieces into a rainbow! Start by bending the smallest piece into an arc and then bend each piece around the top of the previous piece. This is where things start to get really fun. Use hot glue to glue them all together – but remember, only use a little bit because you don't want it to squeeze out the sides. Really press everything tightly together with each new piece that you add.
Once the glue is dry, it's time for a haircut! Trim any extra yarn that's hanging out the end and fluff it up a bit. And voilà – you've got a rainbow! Now, take two jump rings and an earring hook – if you have pierced ears, that is. If not (like me!), you can always use clip-ons.
To attach your earrings to the jump ring, might need to poke a small hole into the top of the rainbow with something like a thumbtack, so go ahead and do that before opening up the second jump ring to connect it to the earring hook. And – we're done! Look at how cute this turned out! Of course, you'll want to repeat all of those steps to make another pair – but now you've got some beautiful boho rainbow earrings to show off.
These are perfect for spring and summer, even if it's just a little pick-me-up while you're staying home. And don't forget, I'd love to hear from you in the comments – what sorts of things are you crafting while you're staying home?
