The Art of Making Pisang Goreng: A Family Recipe Passed Down Through Generations
As I stand in front of the stove, whipping up a batch of pisang goreng, also known as fried bananas, I am reminded of my mother-in-law, Mrs. Van Halen. She was an incredible cook and taught me this recipe when I first moved into her home. Today, I will share with you the steps to make this delicious dessert that has become a staple in our family.
To start, we need to get the batter mixed up. We begin by combining 2 ripe bananas, cut on a diagonal, with 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, and a pinch of salt. Next, we add half a cup of milk and half a cup of club soda, which helps make the batter light and airy. The powdered sugar adds a touch of sweetness, and I like to use about a quarter cup for this recipe. Now, let's get our bananas sliced up and place them all into the batter. It's not uncommon for me to forget an ingredient or two in the batter – it's just part of the process! In this case, we are missing vanilla extract and a pinch more salt.
With the batter mixed, we turn our attention to the chocolate sauce. We heat 1/2 cup of canola oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Once hot, we carefully place the banana slices into the oil, making sure not to overcrowd them. After a few minutes, we flip the bananas and cook for another minute or two, until they are golden brown. I like to use tongs to remove the bananas from the oil, as it makes the process much easier.
While the bananas are cooking, we can prepare the chocolate sauce. We melt 1/2 cup of chocolate chips over low heat, stirring occasionally. Once melted, we add a pinch of salt and stir well. Next, we add a teaspoon of vanilla extract, which gives the sauce a hint of flavor without overpowering it. Now that our bananas are cooked, we place them on a plate lined with powdered sugar.
The final touch is adding some graham crackers, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries to our pisang goreng. It's not just about the chocolate and banana – it's about creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures. Mrs. Van Halen always said that food was a great way to bring back memories.
As I sit down with my family to enjoy this delicious dessert, I am reminded of the importance of sharing meals together. The sound of laughter and conversation fills the room as we savor each bite. And when it comes to pisang goreng, there's no better feeling than knowing that you've created something special – a recipe that will be passed down through generations.
The secret ingredient? A pinch of love. Mrs. Van Halen always said that when cooking for others, you have to put your heart into it. And I believe that's true. When we cook with love and care, our dishes become not just meals but memories waiting to happen. So go ahead, give this recipe a try, and see what memories you can create in the kitchen!
