LEGO with Friends - Phil Broughton, Part 1

The Art of Lego Building: A Conversation with Norm and Friends

As I sat down to build this Lego Death Star playset, I couldn't help but think about the many nuances that come with working with these iconic plastic bricks. From color substitutions to misaligned pieces, it's clear that even the most seasoned builders can encounter their fair share of challenges.

One of the biggest surprises came when Norm destroyed my TIE fighter from the Death Star playset. I had built it myself and was particularly attached to it, but unfortunately, it met an untimely demise at the hands of a well-placed blow. The resulting damage was unexpected - one wing was bent out of shape, which was a bit disheartening.

Despite this setback, Norm reassured me that it's not uncommon for Lego failures to occur. After all, there are just so many pieces involved in these sets! It's easy to get lost in the extras and lose track of what's actually part of the build. I had to laugh when Norm mentioned that he's taken extra coffee breaks during builds - it's clear that staying focused can be a challenge.

As we continued to work on our respective projects, I couldn't help but notice the importance of patience and perseverance. Even with a well-planned strategy, things don't always go as expected. But that's where the fun comes in - figuring out creative solutions to unexpected problems is all part of the Lego building experience.

One of the most satisfying moments came when Norm presented me with a small bowl filled with "extra" pieces from his build. It was clear that he had set aside these miscellaneous parts, which would eventually become crucial components in our respective creations. I have to admit, I was touched by his generosity - it's not often that you meet someone who is willing to share their hard-won Lego scraps.

As we neared the end of our build session, Norm and I took a moment to appreciate the fruits of our labor. Our creations were starting to take shape, and it was clear that we had both brought something unique to the table. The final touches were added, and with a sense of accomplishment, we declared our builds complete.

Just as we were about to wrap up our conversation, Norm pulled out a bottle of liquor - or at least, what appeared to be a bottle of liquor. It turned out to be a clever prop, designed to add some humor to our discussion. As we chatted, we decided to take things to the next level and share a "shot" from each of our bottles. It was a fun way to cap off our conversation, and I have to say that I'm grateful for the opportunity to have shared this experience with Norm.

As we parted ways, I couldn't help but feel inspired by the creativity and camaraderie that had developed between us. Whether you're a seasoned builder or just starting out, it's clear that the world of Lego is full of endless possibilities and surprises. Until next time, when we'll be back to continue our conversation about all things Lego...

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey gamez Wolfram tested and it's norm from tested and we're joined today by Phil Broughton fun  radium labs Phil brought black blood of the earth filled room this tide of science Phil Broughton  you may remember Phil from such things as October cast 2013 where he told us about Antarctica and  death coffee and a bunch of good things what are we doing here today or Lego bit friends I'm a  friendly person you're a friend so this is a week of Lego builds start on the first episode today  for everyone on YouTube and then we have we've already been doing full week of builds already  on the site check that stuff out for premiere members but we turned these into keyboards in  past that used to be the visitor this has passed by now it's already a keyboard or not the lair the  other we'll find out on won't find out will be on on the second episode yes so what we're gonna do  do should we just get to it unveil norm we build Lego we ask our guest Phil what Lego he wanted us  to build one of what he wanted to build yeah you had a very specific request I did well when I went  to the Lego store Phil I was like huh Phil work didn't that Arctic science labs desert Antarctic  stuff is penguins not polar bears Lego has some kits that de manically a little appropriate I've  seen those yes what are your thoughts on those easier think it there is no thing no they'll  be amazed there however are several builds that people have put up on bricks to do for people this  is how to build the dog erupting with tentacles and teeth perfect actually very much incorporating  your good friend here a dragon Veronica's dragon Veronica's dragon actually is a key part of making  the thing dog beast I can see that you may need a couple of them but but you you said no no  Antarctic science lab things you will talk about that but that's in your past moving toward the  future far far away back to Star Wars guys slave ones my life a nice shot right there so aggressive  this is the UCS slave one now well our we've already built a slave 100 tiny slave one let's  put that on the set for comparison inspiration and comparison right there that's good place that was  like what 600 pieces yeah was that it was a nice evening a nice evening bill my favorite part come  on together that well it's vertical I don't know Carbonite no solo gravity is not your friend here  oh yeah it's okay we're building a new one The Dream's dead oh there we go pooping on hold on  so Han Solo's it's puzzle in carbonite that's a fancy one sale oh it's also han Solo inside  the Carbonite I have a Han Solo in carbonite from the old days Lena Pisa which is just a flat brick  yeah texture not some fancy dancy fancy custom sculpted Han Solo in this is this is fourth wig  Lego alright so I wonder if this one this one also has a Han Solo in carbonite it may be the same one  I'm not exactly sure but it looks like this is a fixed scale at least yep and with the cloud city  attendant as well so it doesn't have it doesn't have the guy with ice cream maker you mean Lobot  no no not low but you know I'm talking about full broaden the in the cloud city he's a famous Star  Wars oh and thank you he what in the evacuation of Cloud City he's running he's the - yes and  then he's carrying what looks like a computer core I think it's labeled as a but it's like a Breville  it's like one of those Breville canister ice-cream makers they crank the handle on ice-cream maker  everyone loves ice cream there's a because it's a sticky situation when the Empire is that classic  that's right he's he's a long-running cosplay gag right lots of people cosplay as him and there's a  group of Holy Cross play as him I knew it's a new thing but yes he's become a thing on the Internet  but I'm gonna start breaking these bags out we're gonna work on this chump right in I'm gonna start  packing bags over oh thank god getting a lot of table space yeah this is the future well for  these fives over here we don't label to show that there's gonna be the placard all these blind bags  okay big hole can see was the one so we should keep track of like there are multiple banks  sevens bum bag so multiple numbers your phone will not even get back to in there here's a one  alright there's only one there's the only one one got the instructions so you guys decals I'm sorry  I got you let details know I can never put the ones from is a totally on decal beauty Norbit  the decal master if you want to see some good decal work norm did we did the bear scat liner  oh there is a book to all you've happen I have one two and three you have to do that in every  container there's thousands of them it seemed like and they're all on perfectly straight cuz Lauren  has the exact light and I don't OCD to make that work I have the Maersk sitting at home on built  it's a great bill it's slated for future liquor and Legos so one big book this time more on thatin past builds some some UCS kits come with multiple bat multiple instruction manuals this  one comes with the one I have no problem it's just saying that it is a real big fat book that's mine  there's as multiple languages about the slave one here's some something site in case you don't know  what the most beautiful ship and Star Wars is listen one in Falcon not starts like I think  it starts for superstars for your executor oh wow controversy this wrestling spot here in front of  the table slave on facts technical length seventy feet with seventy feet also height twenty five  feet so it's not actually that big of a ship it's a well it's a fighter given anything yeah yeah it  flies for like that slave one and and the B wing we're always the to that one my heart for you have  embraced space travel and you don't need to be aerodynamic for space that's true but of course  it's like one goes in the atmosphere and that's it that's once you have anti-gravity you don't need  what's your marriage to us either once you really just let go and yeah let's go enjoy the space  station so we don't need to mess on the detail we can look through this later but alright so here's  the most important thing here's the how this breaks down I'm gonna put this right here okay  for you looking at that it looks like for example it's clear that bags one two one two and three  are sequential yep I control are for problem four is absolutely can be done by itself live is what  connects five six and seven connect one two three and four and then eight through twelve I'm gonna  eight through eleven built spine looks like versus and look for the symmetric ality well it's just  the wings norm so yeah 13 can absolutely go by itself so I think it's also like five minutes yeah  here's what I should do bags one two and three should be tackled by one person okay as I'd say we  start filling bags one two or three sold all start on four 4 and 13 here's 13 dorms okay and then no  lame there should be six if we want to know all out the next seven eight nine five five six seven  eight nine that's probably not a terrible here's eight I think ten ten can definitely be done by  its doctor dr. Cayle there's ten although there's more ten this jutsu yeah here's another here's  fives so five six seven eight going in the stacks is real deep Morgan as an organization Katniss  killer YouTube content for day one here well 12 thank you Matt there and if you want to see one  this is man I got the French Manuel oh wait don't say French English and German okay I'm gonna club  you can't go to brick CENTCOM and they have links to the manuals if you want to follow along at home  skip ahead to four ring with the gas begins yeah opening bag so Phil you guys do liquor and Lego  at home right mmm-hmm a proud college tradition that we never stopped do you do though no oh he  doesn't know a doling is doesn't know knowing knowing is when you arrange a brick life you  organize your bricks by color separate throughout we want color size specific shape so that it's a  more orderly endeavor that's definitely not what we do in liquor and Legos hopefully liquor Legos  has a two-drink minimum before you're allowed to touch bricks and by that time you don't you're  just get in there get it I like I like where your head's at so if you're looking this up online this  is set number seven five zero six zero if slave 1 2015 this is the new set we should also introduce  suit properly yeah cuz you're a man of many talents well I've done some stuff it's true  you've been in places and seen things that no man should see then around a bit in addition to being  a friend yeah let's hear your the resume yes the resume the dark resume or the actual resume with  their actual we'll save the dark one for episode two yeah when it's on you we can say what we want  it's not on you talk by day I work at UC Berkeley as a health physicist which for those of you yeah  I've not been tricked by the Manhattan Project era subterfuge a health physicist is a radiation  safety professional it is my job to make sure that we work safely with radioactive materials  radiation producing machines and protect people and property generally from themselves and to  secure the materials so your blog that's my day but rhenium labs is how I think we know  you through mutual friend but when he introduced me to you I went read your blog and got lost in  the horrors of the nuclear age which you kind of document and share in the form of informative  parables about ways not to behave around radiation really there are formal parables for how to behave  period because radiation is just special fire you can't see right won't fire you can't see what I  mean that's that's that thumbs up that sums up what's terrifying about radiation to most people  right is that if you burn yourself with fire if you burn yourself with really cold stuff you you  can know immediately and you can move away from that with radiation you don't know it till it's  too late which is generally a lot of the run of your of your post there however however but wait  there's more in addition to your day job which is I think very interesting in and of itself you have  a series of night jobs that involve two of my favorite things very cold things and coffee can  we want about black blood of the earth because I think I think I think people would be interested  in this were you doing with a disruption of all uh you me said gently I'm on my pal without excess so  actually the the origins the black blood here the airdrop dog go hand-in-hand with working at  Berkeley when I first went out there I was still living out in Livermore at the time and it was  long commute in at that point and I had made in have my own enlightened interest that I should  probably cut down on the amount of coke I was drinking since I was somewhere around two liter  a day man because that was my preferred way to get caffeine and pisco is there any and I'm not seeing  you you felt a Lego but good job there's wrong everyone yeah I'm not getting you I just lined  a brick set yeah I'm gonna find it okay sorry no it's okay you had a beautiful like a button  you couldn't share with everyone but they go to the website they can see yeah this will plenty  of Lego butts on the internet and I was trying to actually be healthier and stop drinking as  much soon as I had been there it is when was this there or there but that was 2008 that started and  I tried to transition over I should drink coffee except I was adding so much cream and sugar to my  coffee to make the terrible stuff near my office palatable it really wasn't doing myself any favors  it was yeah not not so grimy the thing for me with coffee that I realized after after looking  at what I was drinking in terms of soda is that if you drink coffee black it's basically free  right yeah or at least politically speaking it's remember correctly it's roughly two calories yeah  it's it's it's to the point that like the FDA doesn't doesn't make you it lets you round down  yes so out of this out of this terrible commute was born black blood of the earth which is a that  turbo commute and then diagnosed this with type 2 diabetes so Wow okay I'd already started tinkering  with how can I make coffee taste better and then after got diagnosed it became critical to find a  way to make coffee taste better without actually doing it without adding all the cream and sugar  we had them just for a caffeine and survival process okay because since I have a safety  role at UC Berkeley my continued consciousness actually is a life-and-death matter that's not  the right piece okay so so you applied the full brunt of science to brewing coffee and you came  up with I think a complete what in my experience a completely unique brewing method that uses some  kind of high-end scientific equipment to extract the stuff that makes coffee taste good from coffee  beans before before thundranium labs came into being I had a extremely large scientific glass  collection that I've picked up over the years because I think laboratory glassware is beautiful  you are making meth just enough no very clear that's not what the moving people when I moved  to my new place they looked at my all the stuff that was already there cuz I didn't trust them  to actually move all of my laboratory and Israeli a man in his early 20s who was leading the moving  crew he saw the all the racks the Heather hey nice party no no no get out of my house not mad  okay so how do you make black better the earth is scrubs what what it is it is a cult vacuum  extraction coffee hall so in the course of making this I do my best to keep black blood at close  to freezing as I can the entire time so it ends up being you know you get is either in vials or  vials or bottle bottles or if you're truly mad or powering an entire office jugs jugs of this  stuff and it's coffee but concentrated oh yes yeah so it's but a consumption under 100 mils a  day but the thing people think is when you hear coffee concentrate you think about things like  you know Folgers crystals and instant dehydrated coffee yes but the thing that's interesting about  the way you make black blood is you don't break down the complex the it kind of takes the best of  both traditional brewing methods and cold brewing methods in that you don't break down the complex  esters in the and the long-chain molecules and get coffee it's great flavors yeah it  starts decomposing so you end up with a much more kind of shelf stable cold brew that's also super  concentrated and because you brew it at a cold temperature you have them it's a much smoother  coffee than most people are accustomed to I have a friend who is a doctoral student who was actually  about to give his exit talk at UC Berkeley this afternoon so oh wow good luck good luck  Ben well by now you'll either believe you either made it or not so I think he's what time is itthis is the Sultan will be up for a couple of weeks in real time I have no fears for  his passing okay one of the classes he teaches is the psychophysics of drugs and chemistry and  there was one of his best lectures is chocolate coffee and coke Oh for how did the flavors work  how did the drugs work and he actually on in front of the full lecture hall starts brewing coffee for  people with his beautiful Italian espresso maker and Todd teaches his whole class about the idea of  which is awesome that that beautiful creamy layer that actually has a lot of the good flavors when  he started drinking black one of the earth because he was interested in cold brewing stuff as well  he stopped to it how did you get crema with cold deploy huh and that was the joy of vacuum  extraction well by the time I'm done it's as the grounds are as dry as when I started and and you  get you get the richness of flavor and just to be clear you there's really good coffee to start  with yeah right around here and then you build up this crazy distribution network for black blonde  over the years so that and I I mean crazy in in the positive way thank you so that if people want  to get black blood you basically have black blood mules that live around the country oh yeah and a  host organism sorry yeah I've been a mule yes you were the first time I met you was at a comic book  convention where we met it out men's side and then we enjoy sex but yes man you got to us and then  we went out to the back of your car and yeah and pulled up from a cooler doesn't sound like drugs  at all vials and bottles and I transported them through the back of my car yes shake hands and  he's a literary system with me yeah you you had the the certain level of nervousness of Oh Roger  are you sure this is legal what is beautiful that's good it's good at that right to norm is  good we Lea black one of the earth ambassador of Boston sent me an email one time to say so I just  met behind the dumpster at a 7-eleven in South Boston you have just given this white girl the  sketchiest experience of her life thank you thank you thank you you're welcome congratulations I  guess I don't know you've had an authentic life experience so okay so we're talking about black  blood if people want to know more fund radium Labs is the place to go thundranium labs you can  go hit the shop side of the house which will show you all the things you can grab off the store and  you can go play around on the any of the posts on the blog side of the house that are tagged with BB  OTE or coffee and there's links on the side you can just go for it and and we assure you it's  totally legal I as somebody who's drunk too much black blood of the earth and a given sitting you  want to dilute it trade straight and cold at least once but not much is not coffee mugs I mean this  is the stuff that helped powered us through 24 hours of podcasting twice twice at least twice  I say three times I think you'd send it over the first time - that's right you had vials yes yeah  yeah I mean I don't think I saw through time but I wasn't too far away from it well that's  because you hit it late so you've remained a human the the thing about the thing about black  blood usually when I've had beverages that are really high in caffeine it's a really unpleasant  experience right yeah and with black blood it did there's you don't have that kind of bitter  astringent taste that you get with a lot of highly caffeinated is actually a very good warning thank  you for reminding me for as someone just emailed me the other day she had someone staying over at  her house who very much liked her and had paid attention to her coffee habits in the morning  and out of kindness while she was in the shower he decided to recreate her coffee ritual code except  he got the proportions exactly wrong so I normally recommend doing an Americano with black blood so  three parts hot water to one part black blood he did the exact opposite was real bad and when she  came out of the shower and grabbed her coffee cup and said thank you very much for for having made  me coffee she doesn't complain to me as she was vibrating through spaces tonight towards Earth  69 the sexiest earth and said you can't taste the difference between the delusions yeah yes  yes oh yeah it's actually very friendly thank you so so be careful a hundred mils is roughly two  shots so what do you say a hundred mils you mean a hundred milliliters for the science and Kahlan  sorry which is what about most of Planet Earth eh eight out of four ounces that's yeah the the vials  are actually fun because fifty milliliters is just a hair under the TSA limit so oh that's perfect I  actually use it as the restorative but what vials on take it straight through right absolutely carry  on necessary with TSA pre you just have in your back pocket again the black blood of the earth  ambassador of Boston she actually has a flight jacket that she wears everywhere she's had two  vials sitting in the pen in this pocket for her jacket and upon arrival in Melbourne after flying  from Boston oh boy she just reached one cracked a file okay I can toss I can now handle going  to let baggage claim in another country nothing like clearing customs with a little bit of jitter  to you that'll that'll really help your process when you go to a new country that's the thing I  don't really find black blood makes me jittery are there any are there any areas of the world  where you would not recognize of Dubai or United Arab Emirates or the Singapore Oh places you  would recommend against their writing the black blood there are a couple places I it's not that  I can't the ship it's just it won't successfully ship and there are amusing stories with that for  when when active operations were going on a lot more in Iraq there were lots of soldiers  who we're ordering black blood to their camps out there nice and well you can totally ship through  military mail depending upon where you are in the world is where it will get routed before it gets  to you it's also slow too right yes so you try to keep it you try to keep it cold very chipping or  not this much mmm where you are military Priority Mail may actually run faster than normal priority  that I got no good explanation for that but if you're a plant for word Operating Base good luck  you may not see it before well yeah I mean we used to say chases you we used to send I mean  just the thing that we found is that if you're sending stuff to forward offering bases it's  easier to just say any GI at Forward Operating Base whatever yeah and then you put note put  some sizes inside and it kind of finds it but depending upon where you are is how it will end  up routing oh like where you are in the where it's being sent from I didn't know that for example at  the time there was a Forward Operating Base that was south of Baghdad near Kuwait and all military  mail that was shipped out would route through through Kuwait maybe Bahrain first before it  went out to that base if you were in northern Iraq you routed through Turkey oh wow and something I  discovered after someone complained they hadn't gotten their shipment and I apologized refunded  it and then it showed up to me three months later returned stamped with something in Turkish on it  and I know drugs Turkish I got someone who spoke Turkish because that's what you to Berkeley you  can do that it's the joy of having a good language program out there yeah and she laughed and said it  stamped morally questionable materialist neck res anything been more truthful on the basis that any  fluid coming from the West is probably alcohol and thus forbidden validation of sorts it is yeah and  I wish I'd kept that mission accomplished I think is what I would put on that one if I were you okayokay so I flipped through the PDF a little bit and they're definitely subsections bags 11 and  bags 12 can be built independently as well okay three more bags well no no I'm good I got 12  over here those are the size of the tail okay I'm building the the bow I guess do you think  in this slave one we never see inside the slave one really no do you think it's a good to see you  inside the canopy a little bit yeah but doesn't map Django is there in Django and Star Wars Oh  ants right you're the other movies don't exist to you I forgot I I want to know if he really has a  little bunk in a bedroom like disease is it big enough in there to sleep it's not 72 feet by 70  feet seven if it's big that's a nice studio 70 feet is like us but I cockpit sorry real big and  it rotates he's standing up but it's like like a private jet is 70 feet by 70 feet you can fit 12  people in beds and stuff in there you must have a bad you must have a bathroom at least yeah he's  got it the suit doesn't take care loops in Star Wars remember we established this this is this  is a Oh No Star Trek nobody poops it because they teleport the poop out that's right yeah  that's really good no one ever hides in the bathroom there's no bathrooms in Star Trekmaybe we'll see maybe we'll see some bathrooms in the new prequel suits I mean they do post for the  sequels make like your whole days of the future no money no bathrooms oh the sticks may have been  made already already chan dunt dunt it's okay mmm it's okay there's not even any pressure here to  crack under this is three it should be a two we're coming up on 30 minutes do we want to call a call  a break here no no the 45 it's gonna okay an ass taking names we should Phil there's another thing  that you make oh yes I do that this I do the Stein's of science people have seen them and  ask questions about in the background we have it on the background of our of our set here that you  gave us to represent but gave you a pair wonder raffle and one to play with exactly so this is a  Dewar that you have turned into a mug and and again it is available on fund rhenium I think  right yep it is in a way I really took out in the laboratory what people have been doing for decades  people in the lab except really they shouldn't have they should have been using reusing doers  that they've been using for science to put coffee they were already doing that they were already  doing bump that's so hello to one day beer the other day please please no never do liquid oxygen  on the bench shop don't don't ever have liquid oxygen in general this is the scariest thing you  yes yeah I I happily handle a lot of different radioactive materials I do my best to drive  past the liquid ox trucks as fast as I possibly can while it's liquid oxygen scary Phil I know  the answer to this I'm just asking I'm just for clarity because liquid oxygen will happily react  with anything you put it around makes everything burn it makes everything what makes things you  wouldn't normally think would react react the atom has wouldn't so there's a series of questions that  Adam gets a lot and Jamie get a lot when they do appearances um and one of them is what is what is  the scariest thing you've ever done liquid oxygen and the scariest thing they won't do what is the  thing you won't do yeah and the famous answer is the liquid oxygen truck exploding and making  the road burn and it's because will it make the asphalt burn but it's also super unpredictable  and it won't really dissipate in the way that you would expect exactly can happen is that nothing  happens because who wants me the guy who goes out there oh no that's the problem it's not that  nothing happened it's nothing you can see voice so that okay that goes there silent invisible  burning well what not not that it's oh nothing nothing living fire nothing blew up yet yeah so  you add a ton of liquid oxygen and super oxygenate a whole bunch of organic things around  you you make organic peroxides out of everything which is shocks and shock-sensitive detonating  materials so sudden the you described the idea of a LOX truck crashing and setting asphalt and fire  that's not necessarily what will happen yeah you don't know what exactly what'll happen rat 25%  oxygen atmosphere if I remember correctly from captain Bubba's hazmat classes that's when that  would be when detonates Oh at 18 psi pressure and I can't tip youto that lightly  yeah that's fault detonating yeah no I know I like my roads not exploding please fel splode  e road to highway to hell literally well that was a fun movie I liked that it was the hell cop what  did you perceive the movie highway to hell no I don't know there wasn't me I mean I should  have known I guess but yes I would hell with the hell cop and the the demonic hi doesn't have Nic  Cage does it surprisingly no yeah it seems like it should if I remember correctly it has a very  early Giovanni Ribisi role in it Wow really yeah and there I may be wrong no been working  for a long time The Damned The Damned cook at the diner of Hell where he's his grill was the  concrete outside of the outside of the actual diner where no one can ever get served coffee  because the the waitress is eternally caught up in conversations and never ever servers the  neighbors that sounds right yeah this sounds good the cook who no one will actually eat his food  because he's cooking it on the sidewalk outside and he'll cop which is the demonic CHP officer  with his handcuffs that are actual hands it's it's a great movie one of the great things my  dad picked up at 4:00 in the morning watching AMC one time in the days before Breaking Bad  mm-hmm see actually something was good if peace may have ruled off already Tonto good god man  that gives their calls it the nice thing about building Lego in a team wage raishin but that's  just general floor guards yeah it's this piece I need another one what does it look like let's see  oh it's one of those posts wait it's in the box oh boy one of the rules I don't know about your  your Lego endeavors but one of the things we've found is that Lego almost never makes mistakes  Lego never makes like a baby a little mistake for me to mistakes actually they were missing a piece  of the TIE fighter in the Death Star playset when we built that and then norm destroyed mine and I  had a warped piece it was actually bent out of the factory in a wing which I didn't expect like  there was a we've had some color substitutions happen on things although again I can't I can't  necessarily fault Lego for this because to drink minimum before you start building Legos for liquor  unless hardly we're gonna stop though it's hard to tell dark and light gray when you're when  you're three three or four dress specially late at night but generally Legos failures and it's  not not really a failure it's too many pieces they give you extraneous oh you have to do I  have a small bowl oh yeah extra ingredients for a coffee mug and extra coffee right it's the sad  extras check it out but it's fine ah thank you yes I'm not gonna put it in the the sticker for  this one does
