The Fascinating World of Jaguar Concept Cars

As we delve into the world of concept cars, one name that stands out is Jaguar's XK-180, also known as the F-Type. This car was promised with the scissor doors, V12 engine, and four-wheel drive, making it a highly sought-after model among enthusiasts. Unfortunately, this car never made it to production, and instead, we have the current F-Type that has captured the hearts of many.

The XK-180 concept is indeed an impressive piece of design, with features like little ear mirrors on top, which may seem unusual but adds to its uniqueness. The fact that it was meant to become the Jaguar F-Type is a testament to the brand's innovative approach to design. If this car had been produced, it would have been an interesting alternative to what we see today.

Ian Callum's Design and the Birth of the Hatchback

One of the most niche concepts in Jaguar's history is the RD6, which was their first-ever attempt at a hatchback. This tiny two-plus-two design was inspired by the S-Type, with a distinctive grille that gives it away as a unique piece. The idea behind this concept is intriguing, as it represents a market that Jaguar has never entered. It's fascinating to imagine what would have happened if this car had made it to production, especially with a powerful 300 horsepower engine and rear-wheel drive.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enconcept cars are always cool things to check out but more recently manufacturers have been using games to launch their cars meaning that you can have a go from the comfort of your bedroom gran turismo has been at the forefront of this craze with their vision gt cars and this is the latest one the jaguar vision gran turismo sv i think elegant but savage is how i'd describe this thing it has proper gt proportions with that rearward cabin and then this huge long bonnet extending out in front of you it actually reminds me a lot of the batmobile from the 1990s batman animated series used to sit in the back and i always imagined as a kid there was some v16 engine in the front of it but this thing is very different to that because it's fully electric now the big difference between this car and the original jaguar vision gran turismo is all the race car bits that was more a kind of coupe gt car that just so happened to be in gran turismo this thing is a proper le mans racer essentially there's so many trinkets all over the place let's take a look at them let's start at the front here we've got this side blade which actually has lemon position lights in it very race car and the whole thing is sculpted into the front wheel arcs there so the air can come through here release pressure from that front wheel and also probably create some downforce in doing so the biggest addition to this car from the original is the rear wing look at the size of it that must be about two and a half three feet long extended out the back of the car so it is a rear wing but it's essentially an extension of the body work very reminiscent of the lemon wing xjr9 lm which use that rear wing essentially as an addition to the underfloor aeroventuris which this car has an abundance look at the size of these venturi tunnels one on either side that then use this rear wing to continue that profile and create a hell of a lot of downforce this thing must really stick in the corners in the game i cannot wait to have a shot but look at this thing i can fully fit into the diffuser of this car what a thing and then round the front it's less 2020 and onwards and more 1950s and 60s the profile of this front wing is so smooth it's very jaguar c-type you could imagine that quaint front grille in the middle and it would be a 20 2040 jaguar c-type so ollie here is the lead exterior designer at jaguar do you go to gran turismo or does gran turismo come to you so this all started actually when my design bosses they met up with the guys that make the game polyphony at the geneva motor show and that started this ball rolling and and obviously we were chomping at the bit to get the chance to design a car like this and is this completely clean sheet or are there regulations that go into a vision gran turismo car so the only regulations really were that we had to make it feel real and work in the the realms of reality that are simulated in the game it's the coolest thing for us is that we can start from a clean sheet of paper we can make our sketches come to life in this game in a way you know a more pure way that we almost can't do on the road so when you submitted your first design were there any changes made by polyphony or did they accept the first thing that you gave to them they absolutely loved it i think one of my design chief he went over to to japan and he showed the guys a polyphony a range of concepts we created and it was a bit of a discussion actually um about what they all felt collectively was the most jaguar car for the game um so from those few proposals we came back with the one that looked most like this one and then we went from there to develop that into the car you see today so bugatti are probably the most famous in terms of taking their vision gran turismo car and making it reality with the shiron is that a similar situation with this or is this just a complete design study so this is a design study for us and the nicest thing about a project like this is we do so many design studies all the time and we never get to show them to anyone and so it's really cool that we can you can do a design something like this and just show the whole world cool well ollie you've done a cracking job and i can't wait to have a go in one of these in the drive drive simulator brilliant thank you very much i've been sitting staring at this car for quite a while now and i cannot get over the size of this end plate it's very xgr14 like that blade at the front but i must admit it does look like it could be quite downforce heavy at the back but i guess we'll discover what happens with it in the game now we're filming this the day before the uk goes back into lockdown so everything is closing up around us but the guys just over the road at the jaguar daimler heritage trust are specifically staying open so that we can take a look around it's been awesome to look at the future but it's always nice to indulge in the past as well and here we are in the jaguar daimler heritage trust this is my favorite building in the world let me just take you for a brief tour of the cars that are in this museum starting off i mean i'm just casually walking past an xk120 and 140 to a cx-75 probably my favorite modern supercar even though it never properly made it onto the road what a thing williams f1 four-cylinder engine in this one a proper cx75 not one of the stunt ones a proper one swallow sidecar what jaguar was known for back in the day and then we come to my favorite formula one car this is what made me fall in love with jaguar back in the day was seeing the f1 cars competing in the early 2000s i think this is an r5 so the final r5 yes got that one right it's an r5 so this is the final iteration of jaguar f1 before it became red bull the british racing green it's not my favorite livery the older ones were more green hsbc and all these places started to take over all the sponsorships on the car but my god what a thing this car is particularly special this is a normal xg220 v6 twin turbo in the classic silver paint this is a proper production car would be roadworthy this one is the one that everyone talks about this is the original prototype for the xj220 note the scissor doors and then if you come around here kevin the engine in the back of there is what made everyone go mental back in the day v12 engine look at those inlet trumpets absolutely phenomenal so this car was promised with the scissor doors the v12 and four-wheel drive so this was what everyone bought into and they ended up with a car that i still adore the v6 twin turbo xg220 but this is the car that everyone talks about when they talk about the xg220 now these are really interesting these were essentially the cars that were supposed to become the f-type during the sort of early 2000s so this one is officially called the xk-180 they're all concept cars and fairly similar and if these made it to production they would be called the f-type but it never made it and we have the f-type that we have today i've got a model of this specific one at home very pretty cars i'm not sure about these little ears for mirrors on the top of this one but imagine if this was the jaguar f type what would the current one be called would it be called the i've already got a e type g type h type who knows here's a more niche jag this is the rd6 this is jaguar's first ever attempt at a hatchback it's basically two plus two ian callum design and as you can see it was kind of designed based roughly on the s-type with this grille it's a tiny little car it's a market that jagger's never entered the hatchback imagine this thing kicking about against that alfa romeo barrera or a bmw one series i really want jack to make a hatchback imagine this thing with say 300 horsepower maybe even rear wheel drive be absolutely mega are you into your bond films we've seen the cx-75 but this is a bond villain car look at this thing xkr with the machine gun on top from die another day it was this versus the vanquish pierce brosnan in the vanquish what an awesome car every kid's dream back in the what was it 2005 or something no earlier than that 98 apologies so we've got the machine gun on the back and then we've got the the missiles coming out this front grille here how awesome is that i don't think villain cars get much better than that there's gold fingers rolls but i think this takes the biscuit and it's sad that i'm missing out the rest here xjc mark 10 all absolutely amazing pieces of kit but then we've got this a d-type look at this sail on the back of it that aerodynamic sail featured on the the project 7f type as well it was a car designed by malcolm sayre who was one of the pioneering aerodynamicists back in the 50s shaped i guess based off of world war ii aerodynamics he built planes and then he switched to building cars you can see it you can just see the air passing over this car so smoothly norman jewish said this thing could do over 190 miles an hour down the mulsan street at le mans if you come in here you'll actually see a part of this interior that was mirrored in the vision gran turismo this section that splits the cockpit was also running down the center of the vision gt but it's safe to say the rest of the cockpit is very very different through in the workshop is a car that also was used for inspiration for the vision gt so let's head through there this over here like the d-type is motorsport royalty this is an original jaguar c-type and like i showed you on the vision gt it's all about this front body work and into the wheel arches so this is quite similar to what we saw on the car over the road what a car to take inspiration from the first racing car to use disc brakes at the mall and it's just so pretty i can't think of a car that's prettier than that what a place this is just down here we've got a set of group c v12 inlet trumpets how about that gearbox looks like a moss box probably from a c type or d type got a d-type cylinder head over on the workbench there the guys that work here are so so lucky we came here today to check out the vision gran turismo and i must say good on jack for taking things that step further and making something physical i think in future more and more manufacturers are going to launch cars through games like gran turismo or other sim racing titles now i have pinned a comment to this video because i want to know from you guys what is your favorite car from gran turismo from over the years is it a car like the vision gt like the jag or is it something more old-school like say a nissan skyline tell me in the comments i've been mike and don't forget to subscribe to drivetraips youconcept cars are always cool things to check out but more recently manufacturers have been using games to launch their cars meaning that you can have a go from the comfort of your bedroom gran turismo has been at the forefront of but this is the car that everyone talks about when they talk about the xg220 now these are really interesting these were essentially the cars that were supposed to become the f-type during the sort of early 2000s so this one is officially called the xk-180 they're all concept cars and fairly similar and if these made it to production they would be called the f-type but it never made it and we have the f-type that we have today i've got a model of this specific one at home very pretty cars i'm not sure about these little ears for mirrors on the top of this one but imagine if this was the jaguar f type what would the current one be called would it be called the i've already got a e type g type h type who knows here's a more niche jag this is the rd6 this is jaguar's first ever attempt at a hatchback it's basically two plus two ian callum design and as you can see it was kind of designed based roughly on the s-type with this grille it's a tiny little car it's a market that jagger's never entered the hatchback imagine this thing kicking about against that alfa romeo barrera or a bmw one series i really want jack to make a hatchback imagine this thing with say 300 horsepower maybe even rear wheel drive be absolutely mega are you into your bond films we've seen the cx-75 but this is a bond villain car look at this thing xkr with the machine gun on top from die another day it was this versus the vanquish pierce brosnan in the vanquish what an awesome car every kid's dream back in the what was it 2005 or something no earlier than that 98 apologies so we've got the machine gun on the back and then we've got the the missiles coming out this front grille here how awesome is that i don't think villain cars get much better than that there's gold fingers rolls but i think this takes the biscuit and it's sad that i'm missing out the rest here xjc mark 10 all absolutely amazing pieces of kit but then we've got this a d-type look at this sail on the back of it that aerodynamic sail featured on the the project 7f type as well it was a car designed by malcolm sayre who was one of the pioneering aerodynamicists back in the 50s shaped i guess based off of world war ii aerodynamics he built planes and then he switched to building cars you can see it you can just see the air passing over this car so smoothly norman jewish said this thing could do over 190 miles an hour down the mulsan street at le mans if you come in here you'll actually see a part of this interior that was mirrored in the vision gran turismo this section that splits the cockpit was also running down the center of the vision gt but it's safe to say the rest of the cockpit is very very different through in the workshop is a car that also was used for inspiration for the vision gt so let's head through there this over here like the d-type is motorsport royalty this is an original jaguar c-type and like i showed you on the vision gt it's all about this front body work and into the wheel arches so this is quite similar to what we saw on the car over the road what a car to take inspiration from the first racing car to use disc brakes at the mall and it's just so pretty i can't think of a car that's prettier than that what a place this is just down here we've got a set of group c v12 inlet trumpets how about that gearbox looks like a moss box probably from a c type or d type got a d-type cylinder head over on the workbench there the guys that work here are so so lucky we came here today to check out the vision gran turismo and i must say good on jack for taking things that step further and making something physical i think in future more and more manufacturers are going to launch cars through games like gran turismo or other sim racing titles now i have pinned a comment to this video because i want to know from you guys what is your favorite car from gran turismo from over the years is it a car like the vision gt like the jag or is it something more old-school like say a nissan skyline tell me in the comments i've been mike and don't forget to subscribe to drivetraips you\n"
