**BBM Voice Calls and Chats**
The new BBM 2.0 is available for download and allows users to make voice calls and initiate BBM chats with ease. The app uses BBM's social contract feature, where users can see when their messages have been read. This makes the experience feel very real-time and visceral. Unlike other instant messaging platforms, BBM offers this feature, which sets it apart from its competitors.
To initiate a voice call, Renee simply said "I'm going to call you um and then right from there at one touch I can be having uh I can be having a BBM chat". The BBM app is available for download, and users can start making calls and sending chats immediately. With just a few taps, users can minimize the controls and continue their conversation elsewhere in the app.
**Initiating a Voice Call**
Renee continued to demonstrate how easy it was to initiate a voice call on BBM 2.0. She said "going to call you um and then right from there at one touch I can um I got to hit the button but I can initiate a BBM voice call to Alex". When she initiated the call, she could see that it had connected successfully to Alex's BlackBerry Z30 phone.
**BBM Voice Call Experience**
The new BBM 2.0 offers an enhanced voice call experience, similar to the native app on each platform. For example, when Renee received a call from Alex, she said "the call is now running um I can minimize the uh the controls um and just continue you know with my bbm chat". She could then see that the BBM voice call was still active, even after minimizing the controls.
**One-Touch Voice Notes**
BBM 2.0 also offers a feature called OneTouch voice notes. Renee demonstrated this by saying "I'm going to send you a quick voice note when I release it". The message would be sent to Alex's phone, and he could then play it back with just one tap.
**Integra Integration with Glimps**
BBM 2.0 also integrates with Glimps, live location sharing powered by the Glimps app. Renee explained that users can choose a period of time for which their location will be visible to Alex on a map. Once the timer runs out, the user's location becomes hidden again, maintaining the privacy and security that BBM is known for.
**Balancing Native Features with BBM Traditions**
BlackBerry has struck a balance between delivering a consistent BBM experience while also adopting core elements of each native platform. Renee said "we're trying to strike that balance between delivering a consistent BM experience and also delivering something that customers are going to you know relate to as their their native OS". This approach allows users to feel comfortable using the app, while still experiencing all the features and benefits of BBM.
**New Features and Updates**
The new BBM 2.0 includes several exciting new features and updates. Renee announced that a new version, version 2.0, is coming soon for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry 10 users. The update will include new UI elements, improved performance, and additional features such as voice notes and live location sharing.
**Testing the BBM 2.0**
Renee was testing the BBM 2.0 at the New Media Expo, an event where she was joined by Alex from BlackBerry Messenger. She demonstrated several features of the app, including voice calls, chats, and OneTouch voice notes. With each passing minute, Renee became more comfortable using the app, showcasing its ease of use and intuitive interface.
**Conclusion**
In conclusion, BBM 2.0 is an exciting new version of the popular messaging app. It offers a range of new features and improvements that enhance the user experience. From easy-to-use voice calls to OneTouch voice notes and live location sharing, BBM 2.0 has something for everyone. With its balance between native features and traditional BBM traditions, this update is sure to delight both old and new users alike.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey everyone this is Renee from mobile Nations I am talking to Jeff from BBM because it is now BBM for everybody it is not just Kevin Mitchell looks Blackberry anymore that's right it's BBM for iPhone BBM for Android and BBM for Blackberry of course absolutely so what how is that working like that is a huge Market that you just slammed right into yeah I mean there's a billion smartphone users out there um we obviously a really strong base with BBM on BlackBerry smartphones but what we really wanted to do with bringing BBM to iPhone and Android was open it up so that you could talk to anybody no matter whether you use a Blackberry an Android or an iPhone and so far we're seeing really great traction we've got over 40 million new uh iPhone and Android BBM users and we just continue to see great uh great traction um with the crossplatform BBM and that's amazing because you always want to use what your friends are using it's that whole network effect that plays a part in it absolutely and and so I mean that's one of our key focuses going forward is making it easier to find your friends that are on BBM as well as making it easier to invite your friends to join you on BBM a couple things I want to show you here um the first thing you'll you'll notice right off the bat is that uh I've got uh that presence indicator uh showing me that uh Alex kins is available for a BBM voice chat so you know I can be having um uh I can be having a BBM chat so going to call you um and then right from there at one touch I can um I got to hit the button but I can initiate a BBM voice call to Alex so um this is calling Alex on his BlackBerry z30 and that's going to establish that uh that BBM voice call you can see here um the call is now running um I can minimize the uh the controls um and just continue you know with my bbm chat I can go elsewhere in the app I see that the uh BBM voice call is still running and then when I want to uh hang it up I can just hang up right here nice cuz we know that once you're on BBM and you've got those three or four or five most important contacts it's an incredibly sticky application so we want to make it even easier to get you up and running that much faster and get the people that matter to you on the service well sort of that traditional BBM thing where you see the message you see that they've received it you see that they've read it and that makes it very visceral and very real time for you yeah I like to call that uh the social contract between BBM users because you know I know you read the message right so you know when you get that R when you see that r you know the person's seen your message and none of the other inst messaging platforms really offer that um a couple other things worth mentioning here um we've made it easier to share just about anything uh whether it's a photo so I can just take a photo right here from the booth right within the app say use Photo and hit send so um much tighter integration um uh with uh with either capturing a photo or I can uh pick a photo from my camera roll here so this goes right into my uh core camera uh uh controls we really want to preserve a lot of what makes BBM special and for those people who have used BBM in the past we want to be able to maintain um some of that BBM right but we also want to adopt um core elements of the host OS right so um you know we'll give you a quick look today at uh at the new BBM uh version 2.0 which is going to be coming very very shortly to iPhone um and you'll see that when it comes to things like BBM voice the call answer screen um draws on the native uh call answer of iOS right whereas on Android it looks and feels very different it's more like the Android experience and of course Blackberry 10 draws on the Blackberry 10 phone UI so we're really trying to strike that balance between um delivering a consistent BM experience and also delivering something that customers are going to you know relate to as their their native OS here's Alex calling me back so you can see how we're you know picking up that uh iOS um core control I'll just ignore his call um we've also done like I was about to say uh OneTouch voice notes so I can say hey Alex just going to send you a quick voice note when I release it it's sent to the recipient and then on his end um that will come in um uh like a voice note so he can just uh click on that and play it back um the other really cool thing is Integra integration with uh glimps so it's um live location sharing powered by glimps so uh I can choose a period of time for which Alex is able to view my location on a map and he'll be able to track my location and watch me move um for that period of time uh when the timer runs out my location is once again hidden so that you know it maintains that privacy uh that that bbm's always been known for yeah well you're serving So Many Masters because you have messaging in general you got to provide a great messaging experience you have your traditional Blackberry Messenger brand and you have the interfaces of the different platforms and you want to be similar but you also want be a little bit native yeah it's like a balancing act it is it is a real it's a real Balancing Act and and you know so far the response has been really positive and and I think that with the 2.0 release that we're that we're coming out with um in uh the next couple of months uh we're really taking that next step right we're we're polishing it um we're introducing some great new features um and we're really listening to our customers and bringing them the things that they want to see from BBM so I'm Renee from mobile Nations this was Jeff from Blackberry Messenger BBM we are here at the New Media
