Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL First Look

Google Announces New Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Devices

Today, Google announced its highly anticipated new smartphone devices, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL resemble the original design with a partial glass, partial aluminum backing, but with a less pronounced difference between the two devices. The glass section on the Pixel 2 is smaller than before, which some may find appealing. Additionally, around the front of the devices, Google has made significant changes, introducing much smaller bezels than before. These changes are sure to be appreciated by everyone.

The Pixel 2 comes in three colors: Clearly White, Just Black, and Kinda Blue. The latter is an accurate depiction compared to last year's Really Blue. On the other hand, the Pixel 2 XL only comes in two colors: Black and a color that Google calls "White." However, it seems more fitting to call it Panda. Both devices feature a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, as well as the same camera above that. The camera is a 12.2-megapixel F1.8 aperture with laser and dual pixel auto-focus, along with optical stabilization and electronic stabilization working in tandem.

Google has demonstrated to DxOMark, the benchmarking camera company, that its new Pixel devices have achieved a score of 98. This is significantly higher than last year's 89, which is again the highest score for any smartphone. Despite not having dual cameras, Google also showcased a portrait mode similar to that found on iPhones and Note 8. The device uses the dual pixel technology used for auto-focus to determine depth and then uses machine learning with Google Assistant to give us that fun blurred effect without needing two cameras. This means that this feature will also work on the front-facing camera as well.

The devices come with a range of screen options, including a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED screen for the Pixel 2 and an 8-megapixel F2.4 aperture front-facing camera. The Pixel 2 XL features a 6-inch QHD+ pOLED screen with an 18 by 9 aspect ratio. Additionally, both devices have dual front-facing speakers, which will enhance their overall audio experience. Both phones only come equipped with one port: a USB-C port. Unfortunately, they do not feature a headphone jack. However, Google has provided an adapter to utilize the headphone jack with the USB-C port.

Inside, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, having 4 gigs of RAM, and running on Android Oreo. The devices also come in different battery sizes: either 2700 milliamp or 3520 milliamp battery, depending on which model you have. Furthermore, as rumored, the new Pixels will feature a squeezing feature that allows you to squeeze the phone to launch Google Assistant.

In addition to these features, Google has added some fun little software tricks for the camera. One such trick is motion photos, which sounds a lot like live photos but has been implemented by Google. Another trick is AR Stickers, which uses the camera to put things into your physical space using IP partnerships with interesting brands like Stranger Things and allows you to interact with them if placed multiple times in the same space. The devices come with either 64 gig or 128 gig storage options, along with unlimited photostorage on Google Drive at the highest resolution.

Furthermore, both devices use a thing called Google Lens that uses the camera to show information about things you can see using machine learning and Google Assistant. Both devices are now available for pre-order and will ship later in October. The prices of these smartphones start at $650 for the Pixel 2 and $850 for the Pixel 2 XL, both starting with the lowest storage size.

In conclusion, Google's new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have introduced several exciting features that fans of the brand are sure to love. With improved camera capabilities, a range of customization options, and access to various fun little software tricks, these devices will be sure to please even the most discerning smartphone user.
