Review - Hunters 2 - track down aliens on your iPhone, one turn at a time

Hunters 2: A Deep and Complex Experience

As I delved deeper into Hunters 2, I was struck by the game's unforgiving nature. It's not an overly complex game, but it's certainly one that makes you think. The more you play, the more you realize just how much depth is packed into this 2D game.

One of the things that stood out to me was the level design. Each level presents a new challenge, with enemies and obstacles that require careful planning and execution. I found myself replaying levels multiple times, trying to optimize my strategy and find the most efficient path to success.

The lighting effects in the game were also noteworthy. For a 2D game, they added a level of immersion that was impressive. The title screen even featured a beautifully rendered 3D spaceship model, which set the tone for what was to come.

As I progressed through the game, I discovered that enemies would occasionally drop loot, including credits and salvage. These rewards could be used to purchase new gear, upgrade existing equipment, or spend on other in-game items. The customization screen allowed me to see how much experience each of my characters had earned, as well as their current stats.

One of the features that really stood out to me was the ability to earn Salvage. This could be used to purchase new weapons or armor, and it added a nice layer of strategy to the game. However, I was disappointed to discover that once I'd built my characters, I couldn't change their abilities without spending 50,000 credits on Respec. This felt like a bit of a trap, as it meant that players would be stuck with certain builds for a long time.

Despite this limitation, I found the game's store to be incredibly diverse. With a wide range of weapons and armor available, each with its own stats and abilities, there was something for everyone. The arrows on each item helped to indicate how well-suited it was to my current build, which made it easier to make informed purchasing decisions.

The combat system was another area that impressed me. Each character had a unique set of talents and perks, known as "abilities," which could be upgraded or changed as they leveled up. These abilities added a layer of strategy to the game, as players would need to carefully consider how each ability fit into their overall build. Some abilities were quite situational, while others offered more general benefits.

As I explored the combat tree, I discovered some truly unique and flavorful talents. One character's shotgun ability was particularly impressive, offering a chance to recover an action point after missing a shot. Another talent allowed me to unleash a devastating blast of energy that would wipe out all enemies in range. These abilities added a new layer of depth to the game, making each match feel fresh and exciting.

Overall, Hunters 2 is a game that rewards strategy and planning. While it may not be to everyone's taste, I found it to be a deeply engaging experience that kept me coming back for more. With its complex combat system, diverse array of gear, and addictive gameplay, this is definitely a game worth checking out – especially if you're a fan of 2D games or are looking for something new and challenging.

In conclusion, Hunters 2 is a game that offers an unparalleled level of depth and complexity. While it may have some drawbacks, such as the limited Respec option, these are more than outweighed by the many rewards of playing this game. With its engaging gameplay, diverse array of gear, and addictive combat system, I would highly recommend Hunters 2 to anyone looking for a challenging new gaming experience.

The Game's Value

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the value offered by Hunters 2. At $4.99, it's certainly not a cheap game, but when you consider the depth of gameplay and the sheer number of hours of entertainment it offers, it feels like a bargain.

One of the things that struck me most about the game's value is the way that the developers have structured their monetization model. While there are certainly some premium items available for purchase, they're not necessary to enjoy the game at its core. The rewards earned through gameplay are more than sufficient to upgrade and customize your characters, making it feel like a fair trade.

Of course, this isn't to say that I didn't find any of the premium items particularly compelling. The game's store is filled with some truly unique and powerful gear, each with its own set of stats and abilities. While $4.99 may seem like a lot upfront, when you consider the sheer number of hours of gameplay it offers, it starts to feel more reasonable.

In any case, I'm happy to say that Hunters 2 is a game that offers an unparalleled level of value for its price. With its engaging gameplay, diverse array of gear, and addictive combat system, this is definitely a game worth checking out – especially if you're a fan of 2D games or are looking for something new and challenging.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys this is Simon Sage from imore.com today we are taking a look at Hunters 2 this is a game that came out I believe uh the middle of March uh and it's a turn-based scii strategy game uh it's it's a little dense even for me I'm I'm kind of a hardcore gamer and I find sometimes it's a little intense but uh it's it's a lot of fun uh we can dive into the mission area here uh basically it's a kind of dystopian future game where uh corporations rule the galaxy and uh uh they employ these mercenaries called hunters in order to uh take care of whatever situations that that they need taken care of uh so as as you play your your Hunters gain experience points and uh you can uh level up as you get a certain number of experience points on a per Hunter basis uh and uh as they level up you can choose different works so you can really tweak them out to the Gear towards specific roles so you can have uh for example I've got this one guy attakus uh who is uh basically my big Bruiser Malik the Malle guy he's got a big hammer all there and it's pretty cool I got uh Jason here he is my shotgun guy he is he does a lot of damage but he's got light armor so kind of a glass Cannon strategy I'm going with for him uh I've got the rookie here Steve Dave uh he he he's going to be my dedicated sniper but as you can tell he's only level one right now he's a he's a recent recruit that you have to pay the in-game cash in order to get also have to pay to deck them out in different kinds of armor and weapons uh that's what those those uh colored squares there mean just below their name that's that's the quality of the weapons they have the split Square there uh denotes which uh talent trees they currently are using and I I can never remember the color scheme but uh they get really cool names based on which which talent trees that they're subscribed to so like for example if you've got like a combat uh scouting guy he's see he's like a ranger or something uh there there's a bunch of different trees uh and uh it it just offers a lot of different possibilities for gameplay so uh the little dots underneath there those are how many here so uh buddy here just used one moving square and he's going to use up another one opening up this door and he's going to use up another that this game what order uh you can set it so that your guy doesn't do anything this turn but he just kind of keeps an eye out for uh the next attack and game was in kind of a 3/ quter view then I might be a little bit more concerned about it but where you're going to be in situation where your own guys are blocking line of sight especially in tight corridors like this so it's uh it's a little unforgiving but um really makes you think and uh you definitely end up playing these levels time and again um I'm just about out of moves here cuz I can't move my guys in the front any further so I have a feeling I'm going to get shot off a fair bit by these guys but let's let's take a look here they all get to have a go you can tell the uh the lighting effects there were actually pretty nice just for for a 2d game um I found that you may have also noticed that go the the title screen had a really great 3D model spaceship boom there we go that's one guy down uh who else can we hit here so maybe bu up top nice so uh enemies will also occasionally drop loot so we got some credits there which we can later spend on stuff so let's uh let's drop out of this uh this contract here uh just to take a look at uh the customization screen you'll uh you you get extra rewards for having everybody get through it and uh you get to see how much experience they they've earned uh we've got uh one guy got some XP for uh taking damage even so um just by having the these guys in the fight they get a little a little something uh you can also so uh earn Salvage so uh that's extra weapons or armor but we're going to take a look at the store here and we can see that there's a whole lot of different weapons here that cycle through regularly we got another 16 minutes on the next round down here you buy new hunters and you can uh select uh each of your Hunters on the side here and uh the arrows here will denote how this new new piece of gear uh compares to what uh what the currently selected got so got light medium heavy armor of varying quality is white green blue blue and purple um also a bunch of different weapons we got missile launchers we got plasma cannon flamethrower Minun sniper rifle the whole shebang uh and if you weren't happy with how many credits that you've earned through gameplay you can always purchase credits through uh Ina purchases so um 50,000 credits for a buck so that's uh that's not too bad um let's take a quick look at uh uh the abilities that each of these troops can can have I I mentioned perks earlier or talents rather uh so this guy is uh he's got a certain title I forget where it shows up here but you've got to support and Vengeance here those are his two kind of unique ones uh but you also have a bunch of more uh generic uh skills here that all of the that all of your Hunters have available to them different weapon proficiencies uh some medic stuff which comes in really important actually I wish I I'd invested in that earlier on um some extra Health uh but the these trees are kind of where the action is uh you you you've got some some really unique flavorful tal talents here that will uh really dictate how how you end up using each of these guys so on uh on this particular character I haven't uh put any of those in this guy I've I think invested almost all the way in so uh the combat tree gives him a lot of stuff in terms of uh doing more damage or uh if he misses uh this one's actually really good cuz he's got the shotgun and it's not particularly accurate but if you miss you've got a good chance of regaining your action point and taking another shot uh this one over here is is an activated ability where you can just kind of blow away everybody in the room whoever's in range so uh I still I have yet to bust that one out but I imagine in close quarters he he's going to do pretty awesome so uh there there's obviously every time one of these guys levels up you're going to have to pick between you know 14 different abilities which is going to stick with them the rest of the way you can Respec but it costs uh 50,000 credits uh which I am uh not a huge fan of that's that that's quite a bit of quite a bit of in-game cash uh basically once you start building these guys you're stuck with them and if you start investing in weapons and armor and stuff like that uh you got to kind of live with the decision so it's uh it's you you definitely spent some time picking and choosing your talents too bad um I paid $4.99 for this game uh and that's that's apparently their their launch special which has been going for about a month now but uh this is a a very deep game maybe a slower pace and too complicated for some people but uh as as a kind of heavy duty gamer I've definitely found myself getting getting suck into this Air B this is Simon Sage from IM and we are
